Hubby and I are going to try for baby #1 soon. With baby on the brain, here’s my initial name list. I’m not completely sold on any one name yet, so please be honest with your thoughts. We do have a very long last name (3-syll.) that starts with a V.
I like [name]Lars[/name], and [name]Luke[/name] a lot. [name]Claire[/name], [name]Jane[/name], and [name]Margot[/name] are nice as well. I prefer the spelling of Margeaux or [name]Margo[/name] though.
[name]Jude[/name] is a bit too demure for my liking.
[name]Abraham[/name] is nice, but with a 3 syllable surname, too much.
[name]Jules[/name] is more girl than boy to me.
[name]Walter[/name] is okay, but meh seeming to me.
[name]June[/name] is not bad, but I’m not a fan.
[name]Gloria[/name] is boring to me as well.
[name]Lucia[/name] I like it, but [name]Lucy[/name] is nicer to me.
[name]Petra[/name] I’m not a fan of really, but it’s not awful or anything.
Boys:
[name]Jude[/name] - Ok. NMS, personally, but it’s ok if you can get past the [name]Jude[/name] [name]Law[/name] association.
[name]Abraham[/name] (nn [name]Abe[/name]) - Like this one.
[name]Drake[/name] - NMS. Too harsh.
[name]Lars[/name] - I think this one only works if you have a distinctly Scandinavian last name or heritage. But it’s very nice even so.
[name]Jules[/name] - Nickname, not a full name. Good nn for [name]Julian[/name], [name]Jude[/name], etc.
[name]Luke[/name] - [name]Love[/name] this one. Prefer [name]Lukas[/name] or [name]Lucas[/name] for a full name, and [name]Luke[/name] as nn.
[name]Walter[/name] (nn [name]Walt[/name]) - NMS. Too old-manish for my tastes.
Girls:
[name]June[/name] - Eh. Ok. [name]Kinda[/name] boring.
[name]Claire[/name] - [name]Love[/name] this one. It’s my DH’s favorite.
[name]Jane[/name] - So long touted as the epitome of boring names, it’s so out of fashion it’s unique again! [name]Love[/name] this one. Simple, feminine, and very pretty.
[name]Gloria[/name] - Like this one. Extremely girly without being princessy and froo-froo. I knew a girl in college by this name, who went by [name]Glory[/name] as ann.
[name]Lucia[/name] - [name]Adore[/name] any of the [name]Lucia[/name]/[name]Lucienne[/name]/[name]Lucille[/name]/Lucianna names!
[name]Margot[/name] - Pretty. Consider pronunciation issues, as most people in the US (if that’s where you are) are not familiar with the proper pronunciation of this name.
[name]Petra[/name] - Ok. Again, I think this one really works best if you have a Scandinavian (or in the is case also [name]German[/name], Eastern European, or Slavic) last name.
[name]Jude[/name]- [name]Love[/name], but this is getting really popular
[name]Abraham[/name] (nn [name]Abe[/name])- I like this
[name]Drake[/name]- Nms
[name]Lars[/name]- Nms
[name]Jules[/name]- On a boy? No
[name]Luke[/name]- I like this, but it’s pretty popular
[name]Walter[/name] (nn [name]Walt[/name])- I like nn [name]Wally[/name] better.
[name]Jude[/name] - I like it. Also a big fan of [name]Judah[/name].
[name]Abraham[/name] (nn [name]Abe[/name]) - Well, I’d use [name]Bram[/name] over [name]Abe[/name], but [name]Abraham[/name] is nice and its a very usable name.
[name]Drake[/name] - I don’t really like this but its okay
[name]Lars[/name] - Very Scandinavian to me.
[name]Jules[/name] - I like it, but my great-grandfather was a [name]Jules[/name]. Most people now hear it as girlish. [name]Julian[/name] sounds manlier.
[name]Luke[/name] - Like, but very popular.
[name]Walter[/name] (nn [name]Walt[/name]) - Not really my style.
Girls:
[name]June[/name] - I prefer [name]Jane[/name], or [name]Joan[/name], to [name]June[/name].
[name]Claire[/name] - Like. 3rd favourite.
[name]Jane[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name]. 1st most favourite.
[name]Gloria[/name] - Dislike
[name]Lucia[/name] - Which pronunciation? This one gets confusing re: Spanish or Italian.
[name]Margot[/name] - Not a big fan, but I have bad associations. I do love [name]Marguerite[/name], which means “daisy.”
[name]Petra[/name] - [name]Love[/name], 2nd favourite. You hardly ever hear this one, which puts it ahead of [name]Claire[/name] which is comparatively popular.
[name]Jude[/name] it’s okay. I like it better than i used to (probably because I have a baby cousin with the name).
[name]Abraham[/name] (nn [name]Abe[/name]) - not a name i’d use but it’s fine.
[name]Drake[/name] - I like this.
[name]Lars[/name] - I like this.
[name]Jules[/name] - not a fan of it. Prefer [name]Julian[/name].
[name]Luke[/name] love it.
[name]Walter[/name] (nn [name]Walt[/name]) not a big fan of it.
Girls:
[name]June[/name] - not too crazy about it as a fn.
[name]Claire[/name] - I like it.
[name]Jane[/name] - plain but pretty.
[name]Gloria[/name] - it’s okay Very retro.
[name]Lucia[/name] - I like it a lot. My favorite of your list.
[name]Margot[/name] - for some reason, this is a name I really dislike. It’s a fine name, though.
[name]Petra[/name] - do you pronounce it as Pay-tra (then I like it a bit) or [name]Pet[/name]-ra (don’t like). I think this is (or was) popular in Germany.
Boys:
[name]Jude[/name] - Nice
[name]Abraham[/name] (nn [name]Abe[/name]) - I prefer [name]Abram[/name] nn [name]Abe[/name]
[name]Drake[/name] - nms
[name]Lars[/name] - cool name
[name]Jules[/name] - I like it only as a nn to [name]Julian[/name]. It seems too feminine for a boy.
[name]Luke[/name] - I like it. I also like [name]Lucian[/name], [name]Lucas[/name], and [name]Luca[/name].
[name]Walter[/name] (nn [name]Walt[/name]) - I like it.
Girls:
[name]June[/name] - [name]Love[/name] it. I also like [name]Juniper[/name] and [name]Junia[/name] with nn [name]June[/name].
[name]Claire[/name] - nice
[name]Jane[/name] - sweet and simple
[name]Gloria[/name] - nms
[name]Lucia[/name] - Pretty. I love it.
[name]Margot[/name] - I like it but I prefer [name]Margo[/name].
[name]Petra[/name] - Pretty. I like it.
