My NaNoWriMo 2015 Character Names

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! So I’m participating in NaNoWriMo this year, and since it’s inching closer, I need some feedback on some of my character names. Please help? Thank you!!

So basically: in this book world, there is a long, never-ending corridor of doors that lead to alternate dimensions- strings and threads of one, long, timeline of the world. Basically everyone in all the alternate dimensions don’t know about there being all these dimensions, but a small society do. This small society are portal-jumpers, going through worlds, recruiting people, fixing timelines, preventing future destruction, etc. This small society uses magic top hats to instantly escape through worlds (they swipe it down and then jump through) (yeah I know it’s silly, I’m still working on it aha).

Benedicte [name_m]Winston[/name_m]: I’m pretty set on this name. She comes from the alternate dimension where gasoline had not become the main source of power, and where steam power continued to thrive and grow (think Victorian science fiction with clock gears, corsets, and goggles as the fashion for ladies, plus dark vaudeville theater magic and the non-existence of women’s rights. Also industrial elements. So basically steampunk). She’s curious but she’s not supposed to be; she has a fascination for train technology when it’s forbidden for her. Her education ended at fourteen because in her society, women are objects. Though Benedicte is sixteen, she’s supposed to be married in less than five years. She’s also a closeted lesbian lol. So basically she lives in a horrible society with no escape.
Her father owns a rich and famous Canadian train company. Her brother is the heir to the company. Benedicte’s got average brown hair, average height, average brown eyes- basically average all around, physically. Caucasian. She’s not that smart but she’s quick, resourceful, and clever, and curious. Eventually she gains feelings for another character, [name_f]Alice[/name_f].
One day, in a gloomy city flea market, after accidentally telling her brother that she’s lesbian, she gets into a street chase by the police, as homosexuals are so taboo and forbidden. She hides in a magic store until she’s ambushed. But then a mysterious girl ([name_f]Alice[/name_f]) saves her, both of them jumping into the portal to the Dimension Doors corridor, where Benedicte is introduced to a new society, the society of the portal-jumpers.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_m]Twain[/name_m]: small (smol!), petite, serious, strict, sixteen years old as well. She’s cute but she also looks like she could kill you. She rarely smiles. She kind of gains feelings for Benedicte too (LESBIAN ALERT). She’s smart, quick, active, an assassin. She takes things seriously and she’s very responsible, and also a natural leader. She has trust issues. American. Caucasian. Blonde hair, blue eyes, hair usually in a ponytail. She rarely opens up to anyone because she’s escaped a life of pain and betray in one of the other dimensions, and wants to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Though, she does open up to Benedicte, when [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is comfortable with that. She can act a little arrogant sometimes.

[name_m]Jon[/name_m] ______ (help on last name please??): basically the comic relief of the entire book. He’s African American with dark skin. Very loyal, trustworthy, and kind. He’s not the best at missions but he does his best, always. He’s a good friend to [name_f]Alice[/name_f], and then Benedicte. He’s very easy to get along with. He’s got lots of friends, really. He’s come from your regular portal-jumping family.

So ye. Could I please get your help on the name suitability? Thanks! <3

Oh! You’re participating in NaNoWriMo this year! NICE!
Honestly, I was thinking about participating in it since [name_u]August[/name_u] and I was like: “no, I don’t have the time” and a second latter “but I should try. It will be SO fun!”. In the end, I decided to participate too. So… good luck for us and every other participant!

Now, about the names:
Benedicte [name_m]Winston[/name_m] - I thought she was a male at first. I really thought that Benedicte was a [name_m]French[/name_m] masculine version of [name_m]Benedict[/name_m]. But if you think it’s the right one, it’s the right one. Her name is very royal-like and appropriate for a Victorian time. I think she should have a nickname, 'cause I (and maybe some of your characters) have difficulty pronouncing Benedicte.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_m]Twain[/name_m] - perfect. [name_f]Alice[/name_f], blond girl: Disney did it. Still perfect.

[name_m]Jon[/name_m] - LIKE!
[name_m]Jon[/name_m] [name_f]Flick[/name_f]
[name_m]Jon[/name_m] Haworth
[name_m]Jon[/name_m] Yager
[name_m]Jon[/name_m] Mapes

@lu_brasil:

aw, nice! Good luck to you in NaNoWriMo this year, too :3

I see what you mean about you and maybe a few other characters having an issue pronouncing her name. So I’m thinking of a nickname, something like [name_m]Benny[/name_m].

I really like your suggestion, Haworth! Thank you! His name is now [name_m]Jon[/name_m] Haworth :3

Thank you so much!

I’m doing NaNoWriMo this year too! Also with a main character who’s a lesbian. Your story sounds so interesting though, I’d definitely read it.

I think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_m]Twain[/name_m] suits her character. Benedicte [name_m]Winston[/name_m] I was a little unsure about at first, but thinking about it, it sounds right for an alternative steampunk kind of era. Consider me a fan of it.

Last name ideas for [name_m]Jon[/name_m] (even though you have Haworth) could be
[name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]
[name_f]Maven[/name_f]
