My non-conventional girl's list

[name]Hi[/name] Berries!!
This is my first post here on Nameberry (although I have been a faithful lurker for some time ;)) I am due with a girl in [name]July[/name] . My style is eclectic and non-traditional and I tend to steer towards more daring names than most. I don’t want to saddle my little girl with a name that could potentially harm her down the road, so I am wanting some feedback on my list. Thanks so much  Big brother is named [name]Gideon[/name] [name]Ray[/name] ([name]Ray[/name] is a family name… that I happen to detest!)

My short list:

[name]River[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Arden[/name]
[name]Greer[/name]/[name]Grier[/name] (my least favorite at the moment)
[name]Winter[/name] (nn [name]Win[/name])
[name]Briar[/name] (my favorite at the moment)
[name]Story[/name]

In need of middle name ideas as well. Thanks so much!!

I have sort of the same taste in girls names… my name is [name]Autumn[/name] and I have always loved nature names… I am having a little girl in [name]June[/name] and unfortunately my fiance and I disagree on alot of the ‘hippy’ names I want to name her lol.

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]River[/name] and [name]Rowan[/name], I also like the name [name]Lake[/name] but it might be a little too ‘out there’…

A few you might want to consider that are along the lines of the ones you picked out are

[name]Aspen[/name] (I [name]LOVE[/name] this name)
[name]Clover[/name] nn [name]Clo[/name] or [name]Cloey[/name]
[name]Sparrow[/name] (I think this is a little more of a boys name…)
[name]Wren[/name]

[name]Hope[/name] this gave you some ideas!

I know two sisters my from daughter’s play group named [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Briar[/name]! I will ask her mom what other names she considered because she obviously has the same taste as you.

This is sort of out there but I always thought it was cute, I read a book with a character named [name]Cricket[/name] once nn Cri (Cree).

Honestly, I don’t think your list is that weird. I know at least one, if not two little girls with each of the names on your list. Especially [name]Rowan[/name], [name]River[/name], [name]Winter[/name], and [name]Briar[/name]. I actually know teenages named [name]Rowan[/name], [name]River[/name] and [name]Briar[/name]. [name]IMO[/name] [name]Arden[/name] sounds so boy-ish. But I think [name]Peyton[/name] is boy-ish too and everyone and their mother keep naming their little girls [name]Peyton[/name] so I guess I’m in the minority. I never understood the appeal of [name]Story[/name]. That would be like naming your child Dictionary or Glossary to me. I do love [name]Greer[/name]/[name]Grier[/name], but that’s one of those names that your last name REALLY has to mesh well with. And if later in life she would identify as homosexual… well, it could leave to some unappealing nicknames.

Well you do have similar tastes as me when it comes to names so I will comment for sure!!

[name]River[/name]–I don’t really care for this one although I really like nature and place names in general this one is just not up there for me for some reason. Maybe just not adventurous enough??
[name]Rowan[/name]–I prefer this on a little boy but I know it is unisex. My dh likes it cause of the meaning which is little red head cause we will probably have one since I am one and dh’s dad is one. lol!
[name]Arden[/name]–I also like this on a boy better but I prefer [name]Arwen[/name] for a girl. So pretty!
[name]Greer[/name]/[name]Grier[/name] --For me [name]Greer[/name] is more boy where as [name]Grier[/name] is more girl. I really like it either way though.
[name]Winter[/name] – [name]Love[/name] it!! If I was not pale then I would so use this or snow.
[name]Briar[/name] --I think this one is great but it is not my style and does not go with our family.
[name]Story[/name]–This is on our list too I really love it but dh is not as thrilled about it as I am.

Firstly I love your approach.
[name]Hope[/name] you don’t mind my very honest feedback:
[name]River[/name] & [name]Rowan[/name] - To me these are boys’ names
[name]Arden[/name] - I like the idea of it, but it just makes me think of [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Arden[/name] cosmetics, which makes it a no. I would agree with the suggestion of [name]Arwen[/name] instead.
[name]Greer[/name]/[name]Grier[/name] - All I can think of with this name is [name]Germaine[/name] [name]Greer[/name], so no
[name]Winter[/name] (nn [name]Win[/name]) - My pick from your list (also makes me think of [name]Snow[/name], which I have seen mentioned here, although I am not convinced, you may like it)
[name]Briar[/name] - My first reaction I didn’t instantly like it, but I have a feeling that the more I think about it the more I will like it
[name]Story[/name] - Not so convinced & I think that it may often get confused with [name]Tori[/name].

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Briar[/name]! Stunning!

My short list:

[name]River[/name]- i love this name, it is on my short list as well
[name]Rowan[/name]- another one on my short list
[name]Arden[/name]- i think of a school here in New Orleans
[name]Greer[/name]/[name]Grier[/name] (my least favorite at the moment)- makes me think of Gruyere cheese
[name]Winter[/name] (nn [name]Win[/name])- or nn [name]Winnie[/name]…i like it either way. I think it teeters the line of feminine name with a masculine sound and is therefore classic and beautiful
[name]Briar[/name] (my favorite at the moment)- awww like [name]Briar[/name] [name]Rose[/name]? I like this
[name]Story[/name]- getting a bit popular (compared to your other choices)

For middle names i would try more classic names to go with the stranger ones. I like the sound of the contrast (i.e.- [name]Winter[/name] [name]Kate[/name]). Good luck whatever you choose.

[name]River[/name]: I love this name on either gender.
[name]Rowan[/name]: More boy-ish to me, but I think it could work on a girl!
[name]Arden[/name]: Like s.s.apostol (hey, another New Orleanian! yay!), I think of a school here. But it’s certainly not a far-reaching association, and other than that I think it would make a very nice name
[name]Greer[/name]/[name]Grier[/name]: I prefer the [name]Greer[/name] spelling. I go back and forth on this name. Sometimes I love it, and sometimes it’s not my style. I really like the sound though!
[name]Winter[/name]: Very elegant and pretty.
[name]Briar[/name]: I like it! It kinda reminds me of my own name!
[name]Story[/name]: Very pretty and whimsical! Probably my favorite of your choices.

I looked up the popularity of all these names in 2010 as well:
[name]River[/name]- 261 girls and 622 boys
[name]Rowan[/name]- 606 girls and 947 boys
[name]Arden[/name]- 191 girls and 54 boys
[name]Greer[/name]- 53 girls and 22 boys
[name]Grier[/name]- 21 girls and less than 5 boys
[name]Winter[/name]- 217 girls and 12 boys
[name]Briar[/name]- 70 girls and 172 boys
[name]Story[/name]- 80 girls and 8 boys

Those numbers for [name]Briar[/name] I can nearly guarantee you are probably boys named [name]Brian[/name] who have typos on their records. I can’t even imagine a boy named [name]Briar[/name].

However, [name]River[/name] and [name]Rowan[/name] seem like boy names to me, even though I know [name]Rowan[/name] is more truly unisex at this point. I love [name]Greer[/name], but the rhyming words to it are just too unfortunate for the risk in my opinion.

[name]Story[/name] is growing on me, more as a nn for [name]Astoria[/name] though.

I think [name]Arden[/name] and [name]Briar[/name] are both amazing and I like [name]Winter[/name] (even though it is a little hippier than some of the other seasons)

Would you like a nature type name in the middle too? If so, I’ve always liked [name]Skye[/name], [name]Primrose[/name] and [name]Marigold[/name] in the middle

[name]River[/name]- [name]River[/name] has a really pretty sound to it, I personally can’t picture it on a guy, but clearly it is more popular for boys from the pp’s list! I like it for a girl
[name]Rowan[/name]- I know the sweetest 3 year old [name]Rowan[/name], she’s simply adorable and it works lovely on her. I personally would use it for a boy, but I think it’s going to be one of those names like [name]Taylor[/name] or [name]Morgan[/name].
[name]Arden[/name]- Not a big fan, what about [name]Auden[/name]? Has a softer feel maybe? I don’t know.
[name]Greer[/name]- the only [name]Greer[/name] I’ve ever known is a 20 year old male, but I’ve read a book with a female [name]Greer[/name] and I’ve loved it for a girl ever since! Something about it I love.
[name]Winter[/name]- [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Winnie[/name]/[name]Win[/name]. I think it’s the most pretty/modern name to get the nickname, too, so its on my short list. Beautifulname, definitely my pick from your list!
[name]Briar[/name]- I like it, I think it’d be sweet on a girl
[name]Story[/name]- pretty, nms, but I see the appeal completely.

I love, love, love [name]Arden[/name], [name]Rowan[/name], and [name]Winter[/name] from your list. I like [name]Briar[/name], but I prefer [name]Briony[/name]. [name]River[/name] is ok.
[name]Story[/name] is not my style and [name]Greer[/name] seems harsh to my ears.

I think [name]Sage[/name] would be a nice middle name for [name]Arden[/name], [name]Rowan[/name], or [name]Winter[/name]. Or just some ideas…
[name]Rowan[/name] [name]Isolde[/name]
[name]Winter[/name] [name]Seren[/name]
[name]Winter[/name] [name]Aislinn[/name]
[name]Arden[/name] [name]Elise[/name]

Your names also made me think of [name]Sylvan[/name], [name]Arwen[/name], and [name]Cedar[/name] for a first name. Good luck and congrats!

Great, thanks!!

Wonderful insight and suggestions! Thank you all so much for your replies!!

[name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Arden[/name] are my favourites. I like all the rest apart from [name]Winter[/name]…I teach a [name]Summer[/name] and she is so negative-people are always commenting she should be called [name]Winter[/name] instead-so it has sad/negative connotations for me.

I don’t think your list is very unusual.

[name]River[/name] - [name]Love[/name], i think it works for both girls and boys
[name]Rowan[/name] - i know more boys with the name but prefer it as a girls name - i think it’s very popular in UK though
[name]Arden[/name] - Never heard of this as a girls name before. I do like it though
[name]Greer[/name]/[name]Grier[/name] - Not my style at all but not awful
[name]Winter[/name] (nn [name]Win[/name]) - I do love this as a name, 2nd
[name]Briar[/name] - My favourite on your list
[name]Story[/name] - 3rd favourite

[name]Love[/name] the suggestion of [name]Winter[/name] [name]Kate[/name] even though i’m not a fan of [name]Kate[/name] normally they flow really nice together.

[name]Love[/name] [name]Rowan[/name] on a girl and [name]Winter[/name], though I tend to like [name]Winter[/name] as a middle name more. Those are my faves from your list. Also like [name]River[/name] and [name]Story[/name].

I also like
[name]Wylda[/name]
[name]Sonnet[/name]
[name]Wren[/name]
[name]Iris[/name]
[name]Juna[/name]/[name]Juno[/name]
[name]Artemis[/name]
[name]Eira[/name]
[name]Azure[/name]
[name]Boheme[/name]
[name]Willa[/name]
[name]Circe[/name]
Runa
[name]Lyra[/name]
[name]Rain[/name]
Chrysanthe
[name]Tempest[/name]

What a fantastic list! I’m not good with middles as I’m a huge fan of using family names.

[name]River[/name] - I know a little boy named [name]River[/name] and a little girl name [name]River[/name] [name]Leigh[/name]. It’s daring and dashing.
[name]Rowan[/name] - I do like this name but I would never use it for myself as it falls into the trendy “two syllables ending in -n” category.
[name]Arden[/name] - I love this. [name]Jann[/name] [name]Arden[/name] is one of my favorite singers. It seems very fresh.
[name]Greer[/name]/[name]Grier[/name] - I love the idea of the name [name]Greer[/name]/[name]Grier[/name] but the sound tends to put me off of it.
[name]Winter[/name] (nn [name]Win[/name]) - I really, really, really love this name. If my husband would let me, I’d chose it in a heartbeat.
[name]Briar[/name] - This is another of my favorites. It’s feminie and spunky.
[name]Story[/name] - I think this name fits nicely in the middle. I do love it. I’d consider it as a first, but I would talk myself out of actually using it.
