My wife has given me the job of naming our son

I really like [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] Horwood (JGH) and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] Horwood (OGH).

I agree [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] Horwood is a great sounding name

I’d never really heard of [name_m]Liam[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_m]William[/name_m] before, only [name_m]Bill[/name_m] or [name_u]Billy[/name_u], which I’ve got to say I prefer. But [name_m]Liam[/name_m] is a nice name and I don’t have a problem with it like I do with [name_m]Will[/name_m], so if his friends or other family members shortened it to [name_m]Liam[/name_m] I’d be fine with that.

I really like [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] [name_m]William[/name_m] Horwood too but the one request my wife made when she gave me the job was that [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] would only be a middle name, she doesn’t love it as much as me for a first.

[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] gets my vote! I too like [name_m]Oz[/name_m] or [name_m]Ozzie[/name_m] as a nickname. I want to like the name [name_m]Henry[/name_m] more than I do.

[name_f]My[/name_f] vote is for [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] Horwood…I think it flows quite nicely.

[name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] are super popular where I live (in the US so maybe it’s different in Austraila?). I know of 6 [name_m]Henry[/name_m]'s (all age 7 and under) but maybe you could go with the nn of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] or [name_m]Hank[/name_m]? [name_u]Love[/name_u] both of those. I know 5 [name_m]Josh[/name_m]'s and [name_m]Joshua[/name_m]'s (all age 6 and under), one teenage [name_m]Josh[/name_m] and tons of adult [name_m]Josh[/name_m]'s. I would avoid it. But again, maybe it’s not been used so much in Australia? I do like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] with the Aussie accent with your last name (like someone else said, it wouldn’t work here though). I like [name_m]William[/name_m] but if you don’t like [name_m]Will[/name_m] than maybe it’s best not to chance it. I know lots of people who decided to do different nicknames once they were older.

Other possibilities…

  • [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] (like the 3-2-2 combo)
  • [name_m]George[/name_m] (like the GG and I’m not usually a fan of alliteration)

I really like Gavin William Horwood too but the one request my wife made when she gave me the job was that Gavin would only be a middle name, she doesn’t love it as much as me for a first.

I totally get that. I think it would be hard to use [name_m]Liam[/name_m] as nickname for family and friends if you aren’t activily using it, they probably would just use [name_m]Will[/name_m]. I would look for names that aren’t 2 syllables since both [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] and your last name have 2, for a better flow.

[name_m]Joshua[/name_m] is my sons name, [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]. [name_u]Love[/name_u], love his name !!! [name_f]My[/name_f] second choice would be [name_m]William[/name_m].

I like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] our if your names…
But I would also suggest [name_m]Otis[/name_m]. [name_m]Otis[/name_m] is one of my fav names and seems to fit your criteria… (I am just across the water from you in NZ)!

First congrats on your son! What a lovely thing to name your child! Culturally for many that has special meaning. I too love strong names and I think of your selections

[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_m]Joshua[/name_m]
[name_m]William[/name_m]

Are the best, really only not the others because they’re in your family already and your child would be one of 2 instead of the one and only and I think that would be nice!

Well let’s see-
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] Horwood
[name_m]Joshua[/name_m] [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] Horwood
[name_m]William[/name_m] [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] Horwood

I think I like the sound of [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] best, likely there will be more [name_m]Josh[/name_m]'s and [name_m]Will[/name_m]'s those names are fairly common, I think everyone knows a half a dozen [name_m]Josh[/name_m]'s ( because its a great name!) and at least one or 2 [name_m]Will[/name_m]'s. [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] also doesn’t lend it self to nicknames which makes his name seem stronger and more bold, but its also a widely accepted and loved name that I think is rather timeless.
As far as suggestions of my own

[name_f]Happy[/name_f] naming

[name_m]Just[/name_m] read back through a few comments… To be certain I wasn’t late to the game and you’d already named him

I love that [name_m]William[/name_m] is a family name! I’m sure people would shorten it to [name_m]Will[/name_m] or [name_m]Bill[/name_m]… [name_f]My[/name_f] suggestion for that would be to either have 2 middle names ( totally acceptable) or be certain if you use it as a first to choose what nickname you like upfront and stick to it so years later you don’t have a [name_m]Willy[/name_m] instead if a [name_u]Billy[/name_u]. [name_m]Henry[/name_m] is a great name… Nicknames for [name_m]Henry[/name_m] are [name_m]Hank[/name_m] & [name_m]Harry[/name_m] in the states. Its becoming more and more popular definitly and if you aren’t set on it like I said I would give him another name , even though your family won’t mind, he might down the road or you might look back and say you wish you’d have chosen a name just for him that wasn’t anyone’s in your family already and so people don’t immediatly think when they hear his name that there’s already a [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. I think [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] is also a lovely suggestion, great name and here we often shorten to [name_m]Jake[/name_m] which I don’t like as much but its very strong also. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] your baby naming can be fun and you choose something you’ll all love forever!
