I’ve recently fallen in love with the name [name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f]… I love the meaning (my lovely little one), and the sound, which is confusing because of the spelling - It’s pronounced muh-vahn-wee. [name_m]How[/name_m] many problems, if I were to ever name my daughter this in the far away future, would the pronunciation pose? What are some cute middles? Also really open to nickname suggestions!
It looks like a typo to me, honestly. As an American 15 year old, I would say it like [name_f]My[/name_f]-fan-wee but only because I would be confused if I said it my-fan-why. I don’t think I could come up with any nicknames for it, because it just doesn’t register in my brain as a name. I’ll try some middle names though:
[name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f] [name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f] [name_f]Petra[/name_f]
[name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f] [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]
I want to like it but it looks like ‘my fanny’ to me and I can’t get over that. I do quite like Myfi (miv-EE) and Fanw (van-OO) which are nicknames for it though. Obviously they’re just as difficult to say!
I think in Southern [name_f]England[/name_f] and definitely [name_m]Wales[/name_m] where Welsh spellings are quite well-known, you’d probably be okay to use it. Otherwise I’d avoid it; it would be a great middle name though.
You might like these; they’re mostly a mix of other Celtic names including some Welsh;

[name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f] Bebinn
I only know the name because of a sketch in [name_m]Little[/name_m] [name_m]Britain[/name_m] otherwise I would probably say [name_f]My[/name_f]-fan-wee. Otherwise I say the majority of non-welsh people will almost always pronounce it wrong when they just look at it.
[name_f]Mya[/name_f] could be a possible nickname, otherwise I’m pretty stumped, it does mean ‘my lovely little one’ so she could go by [name_f]Lil[/name_f].
I looked at it and thought it was said my fan ee
I love [name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f], but it would be a headache to constantly have to spell and pronounce it for people–which you would definitely have to do unless you lived in or very close to [name_m]Wales[/name_m].
Whenever I see this name, it looks like - my fanny, as oliviasarah also pointed out. I want to like it but just can’t get over the look of it.
I am Welsh so I don’t find it that confusing, but I know that most people will mispronounce it the first time they see it written. I have a hard-to-pronounce name that nearly all teachers get wrong but it’s got to the point where my whole class will correct the teacher in unison! As long as your daughter knows what her name is, she will just get used to correcting people. It actually doesn’t bother me at all, or anyone else I know with a hard to pronounce name, people normally remember my name after I’ve corrected them once or twice.
Unlike some Welsh names, [name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f] isn’t actually hard to say once you know hard to pronounce it. To me it sounds very pretty and soft, and it’s unique outside of [name_m]Wales[/name_m].
Nicknames (Though I love the name in full so much I would probably just use that): Mye
[name_f]Mimi[/name_f], Myf, Anwy.
I like Anwy best as a nickname.

P.S. - No, I don’t actually live near or in [name_m]Wales[/name_m], but I wish I did! I want to someday vacation there for a bit or maybe live there for awhile when I get older.
I love Welsh names, too.
[name_f]My[/name_f] first impression is a little kid trying to say “my family.”
