I think that every once and a while its nice to reflect on your forever favourite names, despite new crushes and style changes- I’m feeling like I want to take some time to appreciate my top girl name that I’ve always loved! [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]!
I fell in love with her when I was 13 and my dad read [name_m]David[/name_m] Copperfield out loud to me and my brother. I adored [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] Wickfield for her loyal, calm, loving presence in the novel, and her name will forever remind me of evenings with my family and the qualities that I love about her.
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f], to me, embodies everything you need in a name. She is strong, adorably clunky, and has a nostalgic feel. I picture an [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] curled up with her sisters in front of the fire, spending golden, late summer afternoons out in the forest, running around barefoot, wearing skirts always perfect for twirling, carrying her favourite books with her everywhere and reading them so much the covers are worn, playing dress up in the attic with vintage dresses and necklaces, always with windswept hair. [name_f]My[/name_f] sweet [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] is curious, loving, bookish, thoughtful, full of wanderlust, and spunky. She’s a little old soul that is kind towards everyone, but also knows her mind, and seems to always get what she wants!
She has international variants like [name_f]Ines[/name_f], [name_f]Una[/name_f], and [name_f]Agnessa[/name_f], giving her a flexibility regarding her usage. Her meaning, “lamb or pure/holy,” is beautiful. And, on top of all this, she is the perfect mix of familiar but unique, and comes with the nickname [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] which makes my heart melt!
[name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to comment about what you think of this name of any names that spark this feeling of joy for you. I’d love to hear in detail about other’s forever favourites!
Loved hearing your thoughts on Agnes!! It does have that clunky-sweet feel, gentle but strong, with playful nicknames like [name_f]Aggie[/name_f], [name_f]Essie[/name_f], and Ness! Old fashioned but in the best way - and it’s got the [name_m]David[/name_m] Copperfield link, and the [name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] connection too!
I read [name_m]Demon[/name_m] Copperhead recently and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] gets called [name_m]Angus[/name_m] in that and I think that would be a fun twist on the name for the right kid
what a beautiful description of [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]! For me, I think that name is [name_f]Cecily[/name_f].
as usual, I fell in love with her through a book. it makes me think of a green silk ribbon on a braid of dark hair. she’s a little shepherdess prancing through the fields (probably in the alps for some reason) and collecting wildflowers. she’s hard at work scribbling a story on the trunk that serves as her desk in the attic. the librarians know her by name and always smile when she walks in. her imagination is her greatest weapon. she’ll play with all the other little girls, but she has just one best friend, who will remain her best friend for the rest of her life, and when they’re together, the backyard becomes a stormy ocean or a desert island and they’ll imagine themselves as pirates or castaways for hours. i picture her in a light green dress with a white peter pan collar. she doesn’t mind sitting still–after all, she’ll curl up and read for hours on end–but doesn’t like being poked and prodded at, and, as such, it’s a struggle to try to brush her hair or put on a fussy outfit. besides, her hair will get tangled on branches as she traipses through the woods anyway, and her clothes will be torn by thorns, stained by the grass, or just rumpled from lying on the couch all day with a book.
I love her, and I’m excited to read all the other responses here–I had so much fun reading Louise’s!
I really like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. There was a show called Blacklist which I enjoyed watching a couple of years ago, and the main character had a baby who she named [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] after her grandmother. That little [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] was just the most adorable girl and she made me love her name!
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is one of the first ‘classic’ names that I fell in love with. At some point, it ranked so high up on my list that I almost considered it for a sister to [name_f]Athena[/name_f]. Of course, I have now realised that those two don’t make a good pairing together but are charming on their own, nonetheless. [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is soft and full of sunshine. I love your description of her and find it to be absolutely true.
[name_f]Love[/name_f] your description for sweet [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]! Makes me love her even more. I think mine would be [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] ‘Lissy’. I first discovered her when I was handed down my mom’s American [name_f]Girl[/name_f] [name_m]Doll[/name_m] and the six books that went along with her. I adored the books, but in my head she’s different than the character. [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] spends hours by the brook, reading her favorite classics or splashing around. She’s prefers being alone and is a homebody. To me, she feels happy (feels obvious though) and cottagecore. She adores rainy afternoons and evenings when she can sit at home, reading to her cat and sipping on tea. Her bedroom is filled with paintings, wildflowers, small trinkets, books, and cozy corners where she can read those very books.
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] is a name that I didn’t really see the hype for when I first joined Nameberry, but after seeing over and over the love for her, I’ve started to enjoy her. She’s just such a happy name! Your description is the sweetest 🫶🏻
