First off I know that I can get everything from the internet, And I kind of realise what I’m looking for as a whole doesn’t exist. But maybe someone could help.
I’m looking for a book with a lot of strange, Old, [name]Barely[/name] used but legit names. International variations, good history and accurate meanings. Without author opinion.
Try [name]Llewellyn[/name]'s Complete Book of Names, by [name]Kay[/name] Sheard. It’s phenomenal, one of the only naming books written by a true, credentialed scholar.
I have 100,000+ [name]Baby[/name] Names by [name]Bruce[/name] Lansky. Tons of names, some really unusual ones, international variations and nicknames listed with each name - listing is just the names with no author opinion. Simple. Interesting introductory bits. Accurate as far as I’ve seen.
I’m seconding (thirding?) the [name]Llewellyn[/name] book AND the Nook site, great names and such interesting reading. The book is really big and heavy with a tree on it. Beautiful!
I don’t know if other people have looked at these or not, but I like the [name]Oxford[/name] Names Companion - it’s a huge volume and an investment, but I use it a lot. It’s not a “baby name” book, it has sections on place names and such, too. I couldn’t tell you how accurate it is, I haven’t talked to anyone else whose used it.
