Name change for adolescent

[name_m]Hi[/name_m],

My name is Sarah, and I’m only 15 but I haven’t really liked my name for as long as I remember. I won’t do anything about this until I’m at least 17 with parental consent, 18 without, and have thought over and over about it, but I would really like to change my name. I’m here because I would like some suggestions.

I haven’t looked all that much, but names such as [name_u]Blue[/name_u], Jasey, [name_u]Andy[/name_u], and Joedie (pronounced Joe-Eddie, I came up with this one, is that weird?) appeal to me.

The reason I want to change my name is because I haven’t had the best life, and when I’m old enough, I want to up and leave everything behind, start a new life. I also want it changed because 1) My dad picked it out (he’s been in jail my entire life), and 2) My mom agreed to it because it’s in the Bible (she, and the rest of my family, have shoved religion down my throat since I was little).

My legal name is currently [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] [name_m]Phelps[/name_m]. I’m a [name_m]Taurus[/name_m], born [name_f]May[/name_f] 1st, 2000. I love reading, I’m obsessed with music, blue is my favorite color, I despise the cold, I’ve moved around my whole life, and am a very outgoing, quirky person. I have a “been there, done that, what else is new” attitude, and am very wanderlust. I get bored and begin losing patience and sanity if I stay put for too long. I crave change, I don’t do well without it. I’m a natural blonde with brown dyed hair, blue-green eyes, freckles, I’m 5’5 and have a pale complexion. Also, I’m about 60% Irish and proud. I don’t have the accent, sadly, but that’s where my blue eyes, blond hair, and pale skin (along with the inability to tan) come from. I’m a very, very eccentric, sarcastic person, and can be a little brat most of the time, won’t deny it. I have 4 sisters, two brothers, a dad in jail, and a mom who can’t stay in one place for long (it’s where I got it). I’m planning on dropping out and getting my [name_m]GED[/name_m] when I turn 16, and then travel the country, and hopefully the world, with my two best friends, [name_f]Naya[/name_f] and [name_u]Alex[/name_u].

I can’t think of much else to say, so I’ll just stop here, and you can ask questions if you’d like.

Thank you for reading, and I hope you can suggest some good names!

Edit: Also, surnames and middle names are very helpful as well. My main priority is first names but all suggestions are very beneficial!

Edit: Irish names appeal to me very much. It’s one of the things I like most about my upbringing.

Also, I like unisex names the most. I don’t know why, but I like them much more than girl’s names.

I like [name_u]Blue[/name_u] for you, but the rest aren’t appealing. I do admire you for knowing who you are and what you want at such a young age–it’s commendable and it will serve you well in life. I was going to suggest [name_u]Alix[/name_u], but it’s rather close to your friend’s name. Perhaps [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_f]Journey[/name_f], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_f]Cassia[/name_f], [name_u]Rio[/name_u], [name_m]Indio[/name_m], [name_u]Indigo[/name_u], [name_u]Cairo[/name_u], Meridian, Sylvanie, [name_f]Surya[/name_f], [name_f]Perrine[/name_f] (meaning traveler, and it can be shortened to [name_u]Peri[/name_u]).

I also like [name_u]Blue[/name_u] for you, and second the suggestion of [name_f]Journey[/name_f]. It fits your goals perfectly and it’s such a happy name. Rkrd gave some wonderful suggestions, and I also second [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_u]Rio[/name_u] and [name_f]Cassia[/name_f]. Especially [name_f]Juno[/name_f] and [name_u]Rio[/name_u].

[name_f]Azure[/name_f], Azula, [name_f]Azura[/name_f]
[name_u]Eden[/name_u]
[name_f]Soleil[/name_f]
[name_u]Wren[/name_u]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_u]Sloane[/name_u]
[name_f]Zita[/name_f]
[name_u]Auburn[/name_u]
Saela (or the simpler [name_u]Sailor[/name_u]/[name_f]Selah[/name_f])
[name_u]Ember[/name_u]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Sojourner[/name_f]
[name_f]Sienna[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]

My first thought was [name_f]Azure[/name_f]/[name_f]Azura[/name_f].

[name_f]Jade[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]
[name_f]Zara[/name_f]
[name_u]Josie[/name_u]

I really hope you’re a troll.

Nah, just a daydreamer. This is what adolescence is all about- trying on different identities to see what sticks, and imagining you have a dramatically different life than the one you do have. You still entertain the delusion that you actually have limitless optionality. I kinda miss it.

However, posts like these probably belong more in the writer’s forum, for a variety of reasons, strict veracity being one of them.

Maybe I’m a sucker, but I don’t think OP is a troll. She is describing the life of a lot of tennagers today. I’m going to answer as though she is not, even though she might change her mind about changing her name.

I like the suggestion of [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] for you. While it means “raid” I still get the strong feel of a survivor from it and I think it fits a blonde well. The next idea I had was [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f]. Since you don’t like the cold, it’s bright like the sun. It’s got a happy nickname of [name_u]Sunny[/name_u]/[name_u]Sunnie[/name_u] built right in. It also reminds me of blue skies. My next suggestion is a bit different but it’s [name_f]Nyx[/name_f]. It’s a strong name, to be sure. It’s unique and it has the shortness some of the other names you like have. It couldn’t be further from anything Biblical. And best of all, it honors your friends because it combines [name_u]Alex[/name_u] and [name_f]Naya[/name_f]! My last suggestion is [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. It’s not my cup of tea, but it’s history is sort of anti-[name_m]Christian[/name_m] and thats a sentiment you sound like you want to adopt.

My favorite is [name_f]Nyx[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like any of these? Are you changing your last name as well? I will share with you that I have changed my name. I use to be [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Angelica[/name_f].

Really? Why do you say that? I’m not, by the way. Completely legit.

Those are all very cute! Also, thank you for the compliment about knowing what I want and whatnot, it was very sweet, made me smile. Lots of people think the complete opposite when they hear my age, regardless of how they see me as a person, so thank you! [name_u]Blue[/name_u] is definitely one of my favorites but I need to try it out a little more. Which is fine, I don’t want to rush into this. [name_f]Journey[/name_f], [name_f]Juno[/name_f], and [name_u]Peri[/name_u] attract me, mostly because of the meanings, I’ll look into them. The others, however, not so much. Thank you so much!

If you’re into something really different Fernweh is a possibility. It’s a word meaning “An ache for different places/ a craving for travel” and provides a nice nickname option of [name_f]Fern[/name_f].

I’ll give you the advice I was given before I changed my name: Use your new name in every possible way (school, work, social, etc etc) for two years before you make it legal. Give it a good solid run. Make it you. It seems like ages, but it isn’t.

Additionally, who we are changes a lot at that point in time. Our brains are undergoing huge changes… something to do with chemistry. I’m not a doctor, but my shrink used to talk about it a lot (also, if your life has been fucked up, therapy. Can’t recommend it highly enough  Pretty sure the year I spent talking to that shrink is why some people are still alive today.) so I’d personally recommend not making anything legal until you are 20 or even 21. You could make it your 21st gift to yourself, that’s pretty meaningful and cool.

Anyway, best of luck to you

Thank you for believing in me. I am 100% who I say I am.

They are gorgeous names, but I don’t think any of them would work. Thank you so much for your suggestions, though! I admit, I think of myself as a cheerful, bright person, and I love the sun, so [name_u]Sunnie[/name_u] has crossed my mind a few times, but every time it reminds me of the TV Show [name_f]Demi[/name_f] Lovato used to star in, her name was [name_u]Sonny[/name_u]. It was called [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] with A [name_m]Chance[/name_m], don’t know if you’ve heard of it. [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] is a gorgeous name, though.

[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] was a thought as a middle name, because I love the name [name_f]Lily[/name_f], but that’s not a good middle name as is. I’m atheist, so I don’t mind necessarily about Bible names, it’s just that religion is something I had to deal with growing up and the name is attached to those memories. [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] is the only name I have a problem biblically, other than [name_f]Bethany[/name_f], which is my sister’s name and much to close to “Bethlehem”. And yes, I’m hoping to change everything, middle and surname included. (:

And, yay, I’m glad I have someone to relate to! What did you change it to, and why, if you don’t mind? That’s pretty, too! I’ve never liked the way “[name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]” sounded but “[name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Angelica[/name_f]” is gorgeous!

As nice as that name is, [name_f]Fern[/name_f] was a nickname my family used to use as a slur of sorts. I read it in a book once and told my mom about it, it ended up spreading to the whole family and we used it as a joking term, mostly for people we didn’t like.

So, I apologize to anyone named [name_f]Fern[/name_f], but it’s not name I would give to myself.

Thank you for your suggestion and your advice, much appreciated!

I like [name_u]Blue[/name_u] and [name_f]Journey[/name_f] very much as well. [name_f]Juno[/name_f], I like, but [name_u]Rio[/name_u] and [name_f]Cassia[/name_f] don’t fit as well. The names in the list are all gorgeous, but a majority either wouldn’t fit or have memories attached to them that throw me off. For example, [name_f]Willow[/name_f] reminds me of a cat I had growing up with that name and [name_f]Willow[/name_f] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]. [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] reminds me of Disney and a girl I used to babysit (but couldn’t stand) named Aulora.

Thank you, though!

I went on a few websites, did some thinking, yada yada yada, and I came up with a small list. Nothing definite, and I still don’t have middle or surnames, but all in good time.

(As I attempted to copy and paste the list, I ended deleting it. Three times in a row. These are the names I salvaged. I’ll add to the list as I remember them.)

[name_u]Blue[/name_u]
[name_u]Avery[/name_u]
[name_u]Andy[/name_u]
Jasey
[name_u]Spencer[/name_u]
[name_f]Journey[/name_f]
[name_f]Juno[/name_f]

I know there at least like 3 more, but I don’t remember them off the top of my head.

Let me know what you think and what middle/surnames would go good with these!

I changed to [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]. I found [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Angelicia[/name_f] much too frilly since I’m something of a tomboy.

That is absolutely adorable. Congrats!

Since you like [name_u]Spencer[/name_u], I would consider it for a surname. Instead of [name_u]Avery[/name_u] (which I like- [name_u]Avery[/name_u] [name_u]Spencer[/name_u]?) how about:

[name_u]Ainsley[/name_u]
[name_u]Everly[/name_u]

[name_u]Everly[/name_u] [name_u]Blue[/name_u] [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] ?

[name_u]Ainsley[/name_u], that was one I accidently deleted, thank you!

I don’t like [name_u]Everly[/name_u] so much but I do like the way [name_u]Avery[/name_u] ____ [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] and ____ [name_u]Blue[/name_u] [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] sound.

[name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] [name_u]Blue[/name_u] [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] is pretty, don’t you think?

Also: Irish names appeal to me very much. It’s one of the things I like most about my upbringing.

And I like unisex names the most. I don’t know why, but I like them much more than girl’s names.
