Name combos for my niece

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Berries,

a long time lurker first time poster here. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m about to be a proud aunt in [name_u]December[/name_u] but there are some disagreement about the baby’s name in my family. [name_f]My[/name_f] sister has a shortlist of her favorite combos and she wants something whimsical and autumn/winter themed. Here’s the shortlist:

[name_f]Alaska[/name_f] [name_u]Snow[/name_u] (nn [name_u]Allie[/name_u])
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Mistral[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Misty[/name_f])
Capricorn [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Capri[/name_f])
[name_u]Midnight[/name_u] Avalanche (nn [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] or [name_f]Ava[/name_f])
[name_u]November[/name_u] [name_u]Frost[/name_u] (nn [name_u]Nova[/name_u])
[name_u]Winter[/name_u] [name_f]Sun[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] or [name_u]Sunny[/name_u])

The problem is that most of my family (including myself and my sister’s own husband) think that these would be perfect names for wall painting colors or air fresheners but not so much for a baby girl.

I need your name wizardry skills: out of these names I’m looking for the least outlandish/hippie/stage name. Since the baby is not mine I definitely want to respect my sister’s name choices but I also want to protect my niece from being a victim of her mom’s creative name giving.

Any input is deeply appreciated! Thank you for your help!

Edit: removed derogatory terms. I was unintentionally inconsiderate.

I actually really like [name_u]Winter[/name_u] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] as an option. A former classmate and friend-of-a-friend is [name_u]Winter[/name_u] and I always liked her name.

Winter [name_f]Sun[/name_f] isn’t a bad combo as far as these go. [name_u]Winter[/name_u] [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] or [name_u]Winter[/name_u] [name_f]Star[/name_f] might also flow nicely and I think it’s okay to have a “fun” middle name

November nn [name_u]Nova[/name_u] is also a guilty pleasure of mine, and [name_u]Nova[/name_u] stands well on its own too. [name_u]Winter[/name_u] [name_u]Nova[/name_u] is a nice combo! Then sis would also have the options of [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] and [name_u]Nova[/name_u] as nn’s.

My vote goes to [name_u]Winter[/name_u] [name_u]Nova[/name_u], or [name_u]Winter[/name_u] [name_f]Sun[/name_f] if those combos on the list are all that’s on the table.

Congrats on your future aunthood!

I think [name_f]Alaska[/name_f], [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], [name_u]Winter[/name_u], and [name_u]Snow[/name_u] could work, but maybe with middle or first names that ground them more. I definitely agree with @12queen that [name_u]Nova[/name_u] would be a better pick on its own than [name_u]November[/name_u], so that could work, too.

Are there any family members that she’d like to honor? Maybe even herself or her husband? Try coming up with some more classic names that she likes to pair with the more theme-y names.

Some that I would suggest off the top of my head:
[name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Estella[/name_f]/Estelle – classics, meaning star
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_u]Holly[/name_u], [name_f]Noelle[/name_f], [name_f]Crystal[/name_f], [name_f]Merry[/name_f], [name_u]Oakley[/name_u], [name_f]Belle[/name_f] – wintry names
[name_f]Alba[/name_f], [name_f]Bianca[/name_f], [name_f]Neve[/name_f], [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] – names that evoke winter imagery
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], [name_f]Christine[/name_f], [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]/Dorothea/Dorothy, [name_f]Natalia[/name_f]/Natalie/Natasha, [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]/Gabriella, [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/Beatrix, [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] – classic names with [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] connotations

Hope this could help!

We don’t love calling names “stripper names”.
Anyway they feel more like descriptions. Nouns not names. I feel like she needs to restrict herself to one word name per combo.

Some ideas for her:
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] (as in [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] Borealis)
[name_u]Hollis[/name_u]
[name_f]Alba[/name_f] (means white)
[name_f]Bianca[/name_f] (means white)
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] (associated with St. [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] day)
[name_f]Neve[/name_f]/Niamh (means snow)
[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] (if she likes [name_f]Sun[/name_f])
[name_f]Blanche[/name_f] (means white; similar sounds to Avalanche)
[name_f]Decima[/name_f] (root word for [name_u]December[/name_u]; [name_m]Roman[/name_m] goddess)
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f]
[name_f]Eve[/name_f] (like [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] [name_f]Eve[/name_f])

I would avoid describing names as pornstar/stripper names. That seems unnecessarily derogatory.

I can see why the names seem a bit descriptive. I think [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] [name_u]Snow[/name_u] doesn’t seem outlandish, and [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] might work very well with a different middle ([name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Starlight[/name_f]?) Are there any family names she would like to include? Any non-themed names that she has expressed interest in in the past?

Some Combo Ideas (still whimsical, but a bit more grounded)

Bianca [name_u]Snow[/name_u] (nn [name_f]Bia[/name_f])
[name_f]Alaska[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]/Alaska [name_f]Neve[/name_f]
[name_u]Hollis[/name_u] [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Holly[/name_u])
[name_u]Winter[/name_u] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]/Aurora [name_u]Winter[/name_u]

Well, I’ll admit first of all that I’m probably not the best person to comment, since I would absolutely adore any of your sister’s list on a real baby!
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] or [name_u]Winter[/name_u] are the “safest”, with [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] being the ‘namiest’ name on her list. However, [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is just a little… expected.
Really, I so, desperately want to see a little [name_u]November[/name_u], that I’m never going to turn it down.
Truthfully, I think that [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] sounds like a good compromise between the boldness and naminess of your styles. I would go for that!

I would agree with you, but the @Lanceygirl says that the baby’s father also finds these names too descriptive.

Guys, you are wonderful!
I definitely had no intention to be derogatory with any name, I apologize.
The thing is that my sister really wants something unique. I’ll show her your suggestions, I think [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Bianca[/name_f] would work well with most of her choices and they are wearable but not overused.

Alaska [name_u]Snow[/name_u] is very pretty!
