So I’ve been crushing on a new name for a girl lately - [name]Maris[/name]! I don’t know really why it popped into my head, but I love names like [name]Marissa[/name] and [name]Marina[/name] and [name]Maris[/name] seems like a fresh spin on the more “dated” names. It’s not complicated or hard to pronounce, I think it has just a lovely soft lyrical sound, and it means “of the sea”. I feel like it’s a name that people would see as unusual but not bizarre, if you know what I mean.
I have heard about the unpleasant [name]Maris[/name] character on the show [name]Frasier[/name], but honestly I’ve never really seen the show so it doesn’t bother me.
What do you think of [name]Maris[/name]? What middle names would you pair it with?
I think it’s beautiful, and such a minor pop culture note shouldn’t ruin it. I like trim, sleek, non-frilly girls’ names, so I prefer [name]Maris[/name] infinitely to [name]Marissa[/name].
Though, I like the Latinate pronunciation maahr-is rather than the American [name]MARE[/name]-is.
I like it a lot! I think I like [name]Marin[/name] better, but that could be because I’m from [name]California[/name]. I like [name]Maris[/name] for all the reasons blade likes it. I’m a big fan of short girls names and [name]Maris[/name] is perfectly feminine and strong.
I’m happy that others feel the same way! Yes that’s another good way to describe it, sleek, but still feminine. I do say it [name]MARE[/name]-iss though. The nn “mare” is cute too.
This is one of those names that may get lost in is translation. Living in Australia, I would pronounce this as [name]MAR[/name]-is. Sounding like an ahhhh tone. The sounding of [name]MARE[/name]-iss definitely has a much softer feminine sound. It’s lovely, but I would be forever correcting people on its pronunciation
I think it’s gorgeous, and very unusual. I used to have it in my [name]Jemima[/name] combo as [name]Jemima[/name] [name]Ottilie[/name] [name]Maris[/name], which I loved. I am pronouncing it as Ma-RISS, the Ma part rhyming with the beginning of [name]Cat[/name], [name]Hat[/name] etc.
thanks for all the thoughts. I’m glad others find it a very pretty, cool name as well. I am intrigued by all the different pronunciations, I never thought to say it any other way. I think they all sound nice, but I still like [name]Mare[/name]-iss the best.
Thank you to the pp for all the middle name suggestions, [name]Maris[/name] seems to go with most names, especially some of my favourites already. I really like [name]Maris[/name] [name]Vivian[/name], [name]Maris[/name] [name]Evangeline[/name], [name]Maris[/name] [name]Olivia[/name], and [name]Maris[/name] [name]Colette[/name]!
edit: from all the sources i’ve checked, [name]Maris[/name] seems to indeed mean “of the sea,” apparently from “stella maris” (star of the sea), a name for the Virgin [name]Mary[/name]. very interesting!
oooh an actual person with the name! if you don’t mind me asking, do you know how others react to her name? (ie. has she ever gotten any questions/comments on it), and also what kind of person is she?
She’s mid-twenties and does graphic design. She’s super sweet and fun. No one ever says anything weird or bad about her name. If anything sometimes she will get a “that’s pretty” or something, but nothing negative, if that’s what you are curious about. The name [name]Maris[/name] isn’t some totally off the wall, weird name. It’s one of those names that you don’t hear often but is just normal enough that you don’t think it’s weird but notice that it’s something kind of underused.
