My husband and I are expecting #3 at the end of [name_u]August[/name_u] :D:D:D (a girl!), but we’re stuck on the name.
Our other children are [name_m]Ian[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. We like names that are traditional/familiar but not over-used, and I tend to prefer more a more feminine ring to a girl’s name.
For this baby, hubby likes [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] and has decided that’s his only choice. I like the name, but I am really struggling with middle names I like. Our last name is quite long (3 syllables), and starts with an F, and most the middle names I like seem to start with “R” which leaves “ARF” as the initials (no, thank you!). The other complication is we prefer 2-syllable first names and 1-syllable middle names… and I’m really struggling to find a 1-syllable name that I love that goes with [name_f]Autumn[/name_f].
Hubby likes [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]- but I feel the double “M” sound makes the name get stuck in the middle, like I’ve got peanut butter in my mouth. I also kind of think the middle name might need to be something more “traditional” to balance [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] and fit more with the names in our family. For example, I think something like [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] has a nice sound to it. We also don’t want anything that conveys a concept, such as [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u]/[name_f]Rayne[/name_f], [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Dawn[/name_f], [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Fern[/name_f], etc.
I’m also struggling because my first choice for a girl’s name is [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], but hubby has vetoed that name (sadly!).
So… any suggestions for a middle name? Help a mama out!!
I like [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] and [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f].
Suggestions:
I know it goes against two criteria but I like [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Faith[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Fleur[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
I like [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] and think it goes well with the other kids. [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] is cute but [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is a little more unexpected. I agree that [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] doesn’t work, especially with the month connection.
I love [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f], and if we break the 1-syllable tradition, I’ll campaign hard for that one!
I also like [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f], [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Faye[/name_f], and [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Tess[/name_f]! My only concern with [name_f]Faye[/name_f] is it might be a lot of F sounds in a row. But I think it’s a beautiful name.
One-syllable MNs for [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]… some of these are word names, so may not fit your criteria in terms of “concept names,” but given that they are so commonly used as names, I thought they were worth mentioning!

Hubby likes [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f], too, but it sounds too much like the name of a plant for me- so I just can’t do it. [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is a beautiful name, though.
I like [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] and also thought [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Blair[/name_u] might be a good option? [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], too!!
Oh I love [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]! But that leaves us with really unfortunate initials- ARF. I am not sure I could do that to my kid? But maybe it’s not a huge deal??
Also glad to hear support for [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. When I mentioned it to hubby, he wasn’t a fan. Maybe with additional exposure he’ll grow to love it? haha
All I think of when I see ARF is the sound a dog makes, which isn’t a horrible association in my opinion. But maybe I’m missing something? People rarely use their full initials, so I don’t think it’s a big deal either way.
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] eh, I like it, I think it fits with your other names and I like the nice pattern you have for your names, word names do pose a specific conundrum… no r and no m and no f probably and no a likely so a … [name_f]Belle[/name_f] is nice but you get sort of another word, [name_f]Kate[/name_f]? I like that I really like [name_u]Rain[/name_u] but yea it does convey a concept… grace is good even though its a word. [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] I like, its not nature like, its a virtue. [name_f]HAZEL[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]AUTUMN[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] I like, I think that will be my recommendation. All four of those names are words so I think its nice and nothing looks like a concept. I like it, I also think you should bring [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] back up if you have another daughter and maybe your husband will like it in the future, all three of those girls names really evoke color and go together nicely.
It might just be me, but I feel that [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is too close to [name_m]Ian[/name_m]. [name_m]Ian[/name_m], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] are great together and each have their distinct sounds.
I think it would actually work better to put [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] in the middle name spot, as suggested by some others…
I would avoid pretty much all word names with [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] to be honest, especially anything nature-related or that could otherwise be linked to the season. [name_m]Even[/name_m] something like [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Hope[/name_f] though, sounds too much like, hope during autumn.
I love [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] and [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], which is a great substitution for [name_f]Mae[/name_f]. What about [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Leigh[/name_u], [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Lou[/name_u] or [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Niamh[/name_f]? There aren’t many one-syllable names that aren’t words!
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is a lovely name.
I understand your issue with initials spelling things. My hubby is PAD and hates it. [name_m]How[/name_m] about
I love [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Skye[/name_u], but can understand why you wouldn’t want to go in that direction (i love [name_u]Skye[/name_u] with everything really). I also like the previous suggestions of [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] and [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Faye[/name_f]. Other options maybe…
