Name discussion thread... :)

Hey Berries! I thought that it would be coll to have a thread where people can chat and get advice about names just for fun - not names you’re actually considering for kids. So this way everyone doesn’t have to make a completely new post about each name question they have. It’s kind of a hard concept to explain, but basically we just have an ongoing talk about names just for fun… okay that doesn’t really make sense! I hope it’s understandable enough!

So I guess I’ll start - what do you think of the name [name]Clementine[/name]? I sort of think as [name]Clementine[/name] as an exotic version of [name]Caroline[/name].

[name]Hi[/name], Bounce!

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Clementine[/name]! I know that it reminds people mainly of the (slightly annoying)“Oh My Darlin’” song and the fruit, but there are worse things to be associated with! It does seem sort of like “an exotic version of [name]Caroline[/name]”, though they have different origins, because:

  1. [name]Both[/name] start with C
  2. [name]Both[/name] end in ine
  3. [name]Both[/name] are feminizations (of [name]Charles[/name] and [name]Clement[/name])

Similar names include:
[name]Clementina[/name]
[name]Clemence[/name]
[name]Clemency[/name]

Nicknames include (they’re stretches):
[name]Cleo[/name]
[name]Clea[/name]
[name]Minty[/name]
[name]Emme[/name]
[name]Emma[/name]
[name]Emmy[/name]
[name]Tiny[/name]
[name]Tina[/name]
[name]Clem[/name]
[name]Mina[/name]

A very small list of middle name ideas:
[name]Clementine[/name] [name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name] [name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name] [name]Lily[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name] [name]Frances[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name] [name]Edith[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name] [name]Ardith[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name] [name]Poppy[/name]

What do you think of the names [name]ARDITH[/name] and [name]LIESL[/name]?

[name]Cecily[/name],

Thanks for responding! I really like some of your [name]Clementine[/name] suggestions, mostly [name]Clementine[/name] [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Clementine[/name] [name]Lucy[/name]!

[name]Ardith[/name] is very unique. It is feminine right? I think it is because you used it as a middle name for [name]Clementine[/name]… I reminds me of [name]Arden[/name], which I’ll admit I really don’t like! And that being said, I am not a fan of [name]Ardith[/name]! It sounds a bit heavy to me, but everyone has their own opinions!

[name]Liesl[/name] (did I spell it right?) is also unique. I find it reminds me strongly of “deisel”. It sounds [name]German[/name] to me. Hold on, let me check the origin… Aha! I was right! Oh… and it’s feminine… :stuck_out_tongue: Sorry, I must have heard this name somewhere related to a male name! Once again, my apologies, I really don’t like it! I actually like [name]Ardith[/name] much better!

Thanks
Bounce

Well… I’m not considering either one of them… They’re just some random names that I find interesting and, like you said, “just for fun”. Yeah, “diesel” is a problem… as is “weasel” for [name]Liesl[/name]…

What do you think of [name]Sylvie[/name]?

I think this has the potential of being a great thread, good idea! I hate starting new threads for every little thing I think of!

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Clementine[/name] so much! I actually like it because of the fruit, because I ate so many of them when I was pregnant that if he’d been a girl that might have been his name. But I’m also from [name]Orange[/name] County, so I thought that it would be a cute tribute. I also kind of like the song, except that [name]Clementine[/name] dies in it… Anyway, I still love it so much and it’s in my top 5. I personally love the nickname [name]Minty[/name] and for me that would actually be the most natural nickname (or [name]Tiny[/name], but I don’t like that at all). If I had a [name]Clementine[/name] I’d try to have her go by her full name, I think. I love [name]Cleo[/name] so much as a nickname, but I have a feeling that would be tough to get people to use.

@[name]Cecily[/name] - I love [name]Liesl[/name]! It reminds me of The Sound of [name]Music[/name], and I love all the names in that. It makes me think of simpler times. It would be so unusual now, but I don’t think it has any teasing potential. I would be so stoked to meet a little [name]Liesl[/name] (or a big one!). As for [name]Ardith[/name]… hmmm. I don’t think I like it much. What is it’s origin? It reminds me of [name]Edith[/name], but I don’t think I like it’s sound or look as much (and I’m not a huge [name]Edith[/name] fan). I might change my mind if I knew the history of it though.

What do you think of [name]Mo[/name] as a nickname? I met a [name]Moses[/name] called [name]Mo[/name] and I loved it. I was thinking it would be cool for [name]Monroe[/name]. I also met an [name]Annette[/name] and was shocked and utterly charmed! What do you think of that?

[name]Lyndsay[/name], I know what you mean; I can’t go a day without asking about 100 questions.

I like the fruit, too. The song isn’t necessarily bad, but our teacher played it for us so many times when I was in elementary school and learning about the [name]California[/name] [name]Gold[/name] [name]Rush[/name] that it got annoying. Rambling! [name]Minty[/name] is cute, but [name]Tiny[/name] is rather degrading… I love [name]Clementine[/name] with [name]Dashiell[/name]!

I think that [name]Liesl[/name] would be a cool nickname for [name]Elizabeth[/name] or [name]Anneliese[/name]. The spelling could be tricky; I always want to add that extra E between the S and the L.

[name]Ardith[/name] is a Hebrew name that means “flowering field”. I found it while searching for nature names…

[name]Mo[/name] is a great nickname for [name]Moses[/name] and [name]Monroe[/name]! You could also get it from:
[name]Cosimo[/name]
[name]Cosmo[/name]
[name]Giacomo[/name]
[name]Guillermo[/name]
[name]Maximo[/name]
[name]Montgomery[/name]
[name]Mordecai[/name]
[name]Morrisey[/name]
[name]Mortimer[/name]
[name]Mozart[/name]

There’s also [name]Elmo[/name], [name]Nemo[/name], and [name]Mowgli[/name], but they aren’t as usable.

[name]Annette[/name] is pretty, too. I love the nicknames [name]Annie[/name] and [name]Nettie[/name]!

[name]Ardith[/name]- Flowering field is a beautiful meaning. You probably don’t like the nickname [name]Dixie[/name] (I do!) but I always think it would work as a nickname for [name]Edith[/name], and therefore [name]Ardith[/name]! Especially since Ardy probably wouldn’t work.
[name]Cosmo[/name] - I love [name]Cosmo[/name] in theory! But I’m afraid it would just be way too out there… how do you think people would react to a [name]Cosmo[/name]?
[name]Montgomery[/name] - [name]Love[/name] this and it’s a family name, but I think it might be just too much name.
[name]Mozart[/name] - [name]Do[/name] you think this is usable? He is my favorite composer, but it’s not like I’m a musician or anything. I think this might be odd to use, but I wish it weren’t.
[name]Nemo[/name]- haha! I mentioned to my husband once “It’s too bad they used [name]Nemo[/name] for the fish, because it would be a cute alternative to [name]Milo[/name]” and then he decided that [name]Nemo[/name] was the greatest name (second only to Buffalo)

I think I might love this thread

For [name]Clementine[/name], I like it, but I’m growing a bit tired of it as I do with a LOT of names loved here on Nameberry ([name]Penelope[/name] being another one). I also find [name]Clement[/name] or [name]Clemency[/name] to be more charming

[name]Ardith[/name] and [name]Liesl[/name] are okay, but I love [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Liesel[/name] (spelled this way). [name]Ardith[/name] sounds too deep to me, and [name]Liesl[/name] looks like a short version. [name]Liesel[/name] with that extra E is on my list of favourite international names along with names like [name]Sancia[/name] and [name]Didier[/name]…

[name]Mo[/name] as a nickname is one of my favourite ones, and I also love Momo as a nickname for girls. [name]Morrisey[/name] would be my favourite way to get [name]Mo[/name] for a boy, but [name]Moses[/name] is also lovely.
If anyone has opinions on Momo for a wee girl, I’d love to hear them. Personally I think it could work for all names starting with M with an O later on, my favourites being [name]Margot[/name], [name]Marigold[/name] and [name]Magnolia[/name], although [name]Nola[/name] and [name]Goldie[/name] are my favourites for the latter so I currently have it listed on [name]Margot[/name] only

As for [name]Annette[/name], it’s the ultimate 80’s name in Norway, so I can’t like it no matter the nickname possibilities. [name]Susanna[/name] nn [name]Annie[/name] would be my favourite, and [name]Nettie[/name] has limited appeal to me…

As for another thought, how about Persimmon? I’m just throwing it out there since it’s been on my mind as a possible (but highly unusual) name ever since I heard someone speak very warmly about Persimmons  I think if [name]Apple[/name] can be considered cute, Persimmon wouldn’t be too odd? Thoughts anyone?

^^

Persimmon… at first I thought that was crazy, but it could work. I love the nicknames [name]Perry[/name] and [name]Percy[/name] so much, and this would give you both of them. I have a feeling most people would think it was really weird at first but that they would end up loving it.

What do you think of [name]Lia[/name] or [name]Mia[/name]? I used to dislike them, but so many names I love end in -lia and I’m thinking it might be a nice nickname. The only problem is my name starts with L and if we ever have another boy his name will start with L. The name I’m thinking in particular is [name]Magnolia[/name]. I think it might be too much, and I’m sure she’d get a nickname. I like [name]Maggie[/name] but I don’t want to use it. I love [name]Moxie[/name], but that’s such a huge stretch. I like [name]Nolia[/name] and [name]Nolie[/name], those could work but there might be pronunciation issues. So, then there’s [name]Lia[/name]. And I don’t think [name]Mia[/name] is a stretch, and then there’s [name]Mimi[/name] which I like… would it be too much to have sisters [name]Lulu[/name] and [name]Mimi[/name]?.. wow, I don’t even know what I’m asking anymore…

Yet another question! Can two siblings have the same initial if you have more than 2 children? My favorite boy and girl name each start with L. But I already have a D. If I use one of my L names does that rule out the other?

Of course they can! Personally, though, it would really bother me - but, then again, I think I’m slightly OCD about stuff like that…

[name]Hi[/name], girls!

So, I have this new-found fascination with F names all of a sudden. Names like [name]Flora[/name] and [name]Fern[/name], [name]Fiona[/name] and [name]Frances[/name] are just jumping out at me all of a sudden! And, it’s weird because I’m usually not so in love with F names…

And, another thing! Why is the idea of a second middle name suddenly seeming really cool to me? I commented on the double middle name thread with my thoughts on the matter and then went back to read what others had said, and someone had commented that if you add one piece of jewelry, you should take away another! That basically sums up my feelings about double middle names until - lo and behold! - something about sweet little bird and nature names ([name]Lark[/name], [name]Finch[/name], [name]Hawk[/name], [name]Wren[/name], [name]Fern[/name], [name]Sage[/name], [name]Elm[/name], etc.) caught my eye and made me swoon. So, basically, I’m having a bit of a mini identity crisis, because symmetry is my ‘thing,’ and the idea of a first, middle, and last name - perfectly balanced - really appeals to me. Then this… thoughts?

[name]Lemon[/name]

[name]Hi[/name], [name]Lemon[/name]! I know what you mean about 2 mn’s–they can sound so perfect, if done right! But I would have so much trouble coming up with the perfect balance! What if you have a 3-syllable last name like mine? I’d be constantly second-guessing myself…1-2-2-3?
Or 2-2-1-3? (I do like the idea of nature names for mn’s, though!)

As for “F” names, I love [name]Fiona[/name], [name]Faith[/name] and [name]Francesca[/name]!

I really like second middles for boys, but I hate them for girls. That’s obviously a problem. I would never have one kid have more names than the other. As for [name]Clementine[/name], I love it. So cute.

I [name]LOVE[/name] Sound of [name]Music[/name], but I’m not crazy about [name]Liesl[/name]. I love [name]Louisa[/name], though. I think [name]Brigitta[/name] is cute, probably because I love [name]Bridget[/name]. Oh! And [name]Gretl[/name]. My grandma’s name is [name]Gretchen[/name] and she gets called [name]Gretl[/name].

I just found this old fairytale book in my room. It was written by [name]Penelope[/name] Larkspur. The perfect name, or what?

Quirk

P.S. I love this thread.

I don’t know if it is just me but I am a huge fan of two middle names I have two middle names. My sister’s have two middle names, I just think it is a great way to honor someone on your side of the family and someone on your partner’s side of the family. Then the first name can be completely unique to the child.

My favorite boy names right now are Irish and they definitely don’t match my taste for girl names. I love the names [name]Ciaran[/name] and [name]Grady[/name]. They aren’t popular in [name]Canada[/name]. So I would love to use them. If I were to have a boy someday. (I don’t have any kids nor am I married LOL). What do you all think? [name]Ciaran[/name] and [name]Grady[/name] do they make a good sibling pair?

The style I have for girls is the more princessy and girly the better unless it is like toooo frilly. I actually loathe the name [name]Anastasia[/name]. I love the names [name]Valentina[/name], Liviana, [name]Livia[/name], [name]Seraphina[/name], and [name]Jessamine[/name]. I also like names like [name]Isla[/name], [name]Hope[/name], [name]Eleanora[/name], [name]Just[/name] [name]Nora[/name] on it’s own, [name]Fiona[/name], [name]Flora[/name], [name]Freya[/name]. I don’t know I like a whole bunch of names. LOL I wouldn’t want to list them all I’d probably take up the whole page. I think the most out there name I like is [name]Nerissa[/name]. I don’t know, there is something about the name.

Hey everyone! I’m so glad this thread is working out! I don’t have much time but I thought I’d quickly say that I love [name]Fiona[/name] and [name]Francesca[/name], and I sometimes like two middle names - only if it fits! So yeah, I’m really glad this thread is working out, I didn’T know if it would!!! But yay!

I love the name [name]Liesl[/name]. I’m [name]German[/name] and I originally encountered the name when reading a [name]German[/name] children’s book (with the spelling [name]Lisl[/name] though.) I can definitely see myself using it one day.

As for middle names, it is a tradition in my family. Usually one middle name is to honor the godparent, and the second is just another name. I plan on giving my kids 2 middle names also, one being after their godparent to continue the tradition.

Okay, so I’ve got two new ones I’d like to talk about. [name]Tess[/name] and [name]Quinn[/name] - for girls. I love the straightforward, simple sounds each name has, the understated feminine qualities, the presence, and the fun, spunky flavor of each name. What are your thoughts on the names? What would you pair with them?

[name]Lemon[/name]

What a great thread! I love casual mass name discussions:)

[name]Lemon[/name] - I think [name]Tess[/name] and [name]Quinn[/name] are great! They’re elegant but simple and playful too, the perfect mix. Some mn suggestions (bit rusty today):

[name]Tess[/name] [name]Jemima[/name]
[name]Tess[/name] [name]Madeleine[/name]
[name]Tess[/name] [name]Katharine[/name]
[name]Tess[/name] [name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Tess[/name] [name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Tess[/name] [name]Pamela[/name]
[name]Tess[/name] [name]Miriam[/name]

[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Sylvie[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Penelope[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Rebecca[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Abigail[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Louise[/name]

[name]Tess[/name] [name]Alexandria[/name]
[name]Tess[/name] Maximilienne
[name]Tess[/name] [name]Evangeline[/name]
[name]Tess[/name] [name]Vivienne[/name]
[name]Tess[/name] [name]Mirabelle[/name]
[name]Tess[/name] [name]Olympia[/name]
[name]Tess[/name] [name]Wilhelmina[/name]

[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Antoinette[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Eulalia[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Georgiana[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Leticia[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Mariposa[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Victoria[/name]

Those any good?

  • [name]Charlie[/name]

Oh, no, [name]Charlie[/name] - those were very good! Thanks! You had me cracking up with [name]Tess[/name] [name]Jemima[/name], for some reason (?), but you selected some very nice names indeed!

These are my favorites from your ideas:

[name]Tess[/name] [name]Madeleine[/name], [name]Tess[/name] [name]Catherine[/name], [name]Tess[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Tess[/name] [name]Evangeline[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Quinn[/name] [name]Rebecca[/name], [name]Quinn[/name] [name]Louisa[/name], [name]Quinn[/name] [name]Georgiana[/name]

I think both of these names are difficult to match with middle names, myself. For [name]Tess[/name], there seems to be an issue with flow, and for [name]Quinn[/name], there is the problem of making sure you aren’t accidentally saying [name]Queen[/name] so-and-so (alas, there shall be no [name]Quinn[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] or [name]Quinn[/name] [name]Victoria[/name], regardless of their utter loveliness)! You know what I mean? In an ideal world, I think the playful, strong quality of [name]Tess[/name] and [name]Quinn[/name] should be balanced by something feminine, elegant, sophisticated, and borderline-vintage. But, as I’ve said, the task is a difficult one to accomplish. Here were some of my musings on the topic…

[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Aurora[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name]*
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Celeste[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Diana[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Elinor[/name]*
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Helena[/name]* [This might be my favorite…]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Isobel[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Lucille[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Margaret[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Ophelia[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Rosemary[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Sophia[/name]*
[name]Quinn[/name] [name]Violet[/name]

[name]Tess[/name], well, honestly, I can’t think of anything I like more than your suggestions for [name]Tess[/name]! [name]Tess[/name] [name]Evangeline[/name] and [name]Tess[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] are so beautiful, and I actually like [name]Quinn[/name] [name]Evangeline[/name] a lot, too!

I love [name]Tess[/name] [name]Evangeline[/name] and [name]Quinn[/name] [name]Helena[/name]. Actually, I just had a thought - [name]Quinn[/name] [name]Helena[/name] [name]Starling[/name]! Hmm…

What might you pair with [name]Tess[/name] and [name]Quinn[/name], for a boy or girl name? And, it certainly doesn’t need to be a one-syllable name, for sure!

[name]Lemon[/name]

PS Sorry for commandeering the thread, Berries! Post away with your own thoughts and questions!

PPS It is so WEIRD to me that I could just as easily imagine having future daughters called [name]Tess[/name] and [name]Quinn[/name] as I could imagine little [name]Lydia[/name]'s and [name]Emmeline[/name]'s running around…
