We’re having a baby girl, and we love the name Poppy, possibly with the middle name Elaine. The only thing is… our last name is Johns. Would a name like Poppy Johns be setting her up for teasing in school?
I don’t think the reference makes the name totally unusable, but to be honest, I saw what you meant immediately and personally, I wouldn’t do it. It’s not a great association especially since the founder of the company isn’t known for being a great person.
I also think it’s unusable unfortunately. Would you like [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] or [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]?
Hm… that is pretty similar. I’d probably go for Penelope, Phoebe, or Pippa instead! I also think these sound very nice with middle name Elaine!
I feel like I’m missing the reference
When said out loud, it soundsg a lot like Papa Johns!
I do like [name_f]Pippa[/name_f]!
We’ve wondered also if a hyphenated name would distance the association, possibly something more southern like Poppy-Mae?
i have no idea what the association is but i do really love poppy.
i think a hyphenated name might help to distinguish it but i wouldn’t add mae/grace etc just for the sake of it if you’d realistically only call her poppy.
I have to agree with Jack here.
While Poppy is lovely, perhaps there’s a similar name that would work for you? I suggest thinking about what you like about Poppy (nature theme, sound, imagery, etc.) and find other names that share those elements.
suggestions from Poppy's "similar names" section:
Daisy
Ruby
Piper
Pearl
Pippa
Olive
Maisie
Penelope (nickname Poppy could still be used)
Hazel
Ooh, i see what you mean. Yeah it does sound a bit like that I’m afraid
Poppy-Mae Johns sounds good
I wouldn’t use it because of that reference. Also whenever I hear poppy I think drugs so that makes it unusable too me.
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is a word used for father in some [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking areas and Spanish (papi). This makes it seem not a girl’s name.
I personally wouldn’t use the name [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] with Johns, but what about [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] like @Kipperbo1 suggested? It’s much less obviously associated with the pizza chain.
Similarly, [name_u]Piper[/name_u] might work? [name_u]Or[/name_u] for another nature-based name, there’s [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Heather[/name_f], [name_u]Fern[/name_u], [name_u]Willow[/name_u], etc.
Best of luck
