Name for a character who isn't there

I’m having trouble naming a character, the challenge being that the character isn’t actually there.

I’ll explain what I mean…

I have one characted named [name]Gareth[/name] (named for his grandfather - it’s a clunky, old-man name but he wears it well, in a “so uncool I make it cool” sort of way). The character I’m trying to name was [name]Gareth[/name]'s best friend. They went to school together, and we in a band together and were practically brothers, until the friend died in a car accident when he was 18. And after dealing with his grief [name]Gareth[/name], now 26, has always tried to live life for the both of them.

So although the character isn’t in the book, he’s a very important part of [name]Gareth[/name]'s story, explaining who he is and why he lives the way he does. But the fact he never appears is making him hard to name.

I could really use some ideas :slight_smile:
