[name_m]Even[/name_m] though I’ve been plotting my novel for a long time, I still need a name for one of my characters, and I still haven’t found a name that I’m drawn to. Can you please help me out? ^ ^
So this character has long, silver/platinum hair with bangs, and she sometimes wears very cultural clothing. She’s literally the [name_u]Ocean[/name_u]. She has a huge fear of death because of that. ( ‘What happens when I die? Does all the water in the world dry up? Would billions of people die along with me?’). So her people convinced her to stay locked up in a prison to keep her safe, which explains her fair skin and her thinness. She eventually escapes after being locked in there for years, but she still looks like an adolescent. (She’s Immortal)
When she meets up with all the other characters, she has major trust issues, and she’s kind of rude. (Hey, in her defense she hasn’t communicated with people in a while!)
I think, in the end, she either learns how to live with this problem or 2), she learns that this ‘[name_u]Ocean[/name_u] thing’ was all a lie, and so is her ‘immortality’, which obviously angers her until she realizes that she can finally be able to have fun!
Sorry for the long text, I tried to put as many details as possible! In the beginning of my novel plans I called her ‘Tirri’, but now I’m not crazy about this name at all.
When you say that she is literally the Ocean and she sometimes wears “very cultural” clothing, what exactly does that mean? There are oceanic cultures in every conitinent on Earth. If she dresses culturally from time to time, then I assume that her culture would also influence her name. Is there a specific part of the world that you’re thinking of? Even if you are making up your own culture, are you taking influence from a real world culture?
That being said, here are a few culturally diverse “ocean girl” names
Darya (Persian, “sea”)
Hai (Chinese, “sea”)
Mira (Hindi/Marathi/Tamil, etc, “ocean”)
Manami (Japanese, “love” “beautiful” and “sea”)
Kaimana (Hawaiian, “ocean” and “strong”)
Maris (English, “of the sea”)
Marisol (Spanish, “sea and sun”
Nerissa (Shakespearean/Greek, “sea sprite”)
Naia (Basque, “wave”/ “sea foam”)
Morgan (English/Welsh/French, “sea circle”)
Sadaf (Arabic “seashell”/“mother of pearl”)
Concha (Spanish “seashell”, diminuative of Conepción)
I based her clothing loosely on the [name_f]Indian[/name_f] culture. She wears a long skirt (I believe they’re called ‘Lehengas’, and hers would be a simpler version of this kind of skirt, but the shape of it is the same.) She also wears a crop top. Around her waist in a thick, patterned scarf.
What I mean by her being the ocean is that she would be all the oceans of the world in one form. If you think that this is kind of extreme, I sort of beleive you, so that’s why I’m tempted to follow through with the alternate ending of the story. She’s a side character, but I liked the idea of her having a complicated backstory anyway!
Also, she doesn’t have to have a cultural name specifically. You can mix in whatever names seem fit. Greek names seem to work with this character as well. Thanks again!
