Would his parents name him [name_m]Adriel[/name_m]? It’s less common/established than [name_m]Adrian[/name_m], so unless his parents are Hebrew, have a family member named [name_m]Adriel[/name_m], or they’re fellow namenerds (;)), I’d stick with [name_m]Adrian[/name_m].
Definitely go with [name_m]Adrian[/name_m]. It’s perfect for the character you just described, no need to doubt yourself 
His family lives in [name_u]Brazil[/name_u], his mom being American and his dad a native-born Brazilian. One idea is that only his dad calls [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] ‘Adrião’, which is the Portuguese variation. [name_m]Adriel[/name_m] would probably be easier to pronounce in that language rather than [name_m]Adrian[/name_m].
Buuuut I like [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] as well…
