Hey all, I posted several weeks ago looking for a name that would fit with our first two boys. Got some amazing help and, assuming nothing changes when he’s born and we finally see his face, we are planning on:
DS1: [name_u]Moses[/name_u]
DS2: [name_u]August[/name_u]
DS3: [name_m]Soren[/name_m]
The only thing left to decide is the spelling. I prefer the look and meaning of Romanian [name_m]Sorin[/name_m]. However it takes an already unfamiliar name (to a layman anyway) and makes it even a little weirder. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband prefers [name_m]Soren[/name_m] for that reason. What do you all think?
[name_u]Moses[/name_u], [name_u]August[/name_u], and [name_m]Sorin[/name_m]
[name_u]Moses[/name_u], [name_u]August[/name_u], and [name_m]Soren[/name_m]
Middle name is still in progress, but it will be [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], [name_u]Harry[/name_u], or [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] (so in case he dislikes having an unusual name, he can switch).
Thanks so much!!

If you think Soren/Sorin is going to be a new, unfamiliar name to the other people in your son’s life, why not spell it how you want to? He’ll have to spell it out for people either way if they’ve truly never heard of his name before.

Gosh your boys are beautifully named
I think [name_m]Soren[/name_m] is beyond charming such a lovely name that works wonderfully with M0ses and Augu5t. I prefer the spelling [name_m]Soren[/name_m] I think visually the name looks more attractive and complete despite the spelling only being one letter change up. However I do agree @lucy_halo1 he most likely will have to spell his name anyways so you may as well choose your favoured spelling.
So in the US, they will likely be pronounced similarly if not the exact same so spell it with either vowel.
For middles, I would go with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] because it flows the best and the double final -n sound with [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] is a bit odd to me.
Hooray for settling on a name!
Thank you for complimenting my boys’ names! Means a lot to me. Everyone on the name website that I was active in when I was expecting my first HATED the name [name_u]Moses[/name_u] lol. There were some very strong opinions. But it fit him so well we ignored them and did it anyway so I’m always happy when someone compliments it!

I cannot imagine that, I love M0ses!!! Honestly I think M0ses such a gorgeous name that I think would be really fitting for me & my partner has M0ses is popular amongst the Jewish community (my family are Jewish) and [name_u]East[/name_u] African community which is what my partner is. I love him. So glad you followed your heart and chose M0ses.
Personally I grew up with a [name_m]Sorin[/name_m], so I have never been a fan of [name_m]Soren[/name_m]. [name_m]Sorin[/name_m] is easy enough for people to pick up on quickly and there was never any issue with pronunciation after the initial introduction nor any weirdness when we were kids. I’m in the US.
Btw the [name_m]Sorin[/name_m] I grew up with was pronounced Sor-een and his family was from Romania.
Go with what you like best and not based on what you think others will find easier/better.

If you like [name_m]Sorin[/name_m] best, I’d go with that - as others have said, he might need to spell it either way! [name_m]Sorin[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] is nice
I think [name_m]Soren[/name_m] is a well established name that most people recognize and are most familiar with that spelling so that is what I would choose. If you are a nickname family it lends itself to the nn [name_u]Ren[/name_u] which is nice too.
This is what my husband thinks. Despite it being so low on the US list (where we live), he thinks it’s familiar enough that most people will know how to spell it (this way). All I know is I have overheard an elementary-age [name_m]Soren[/name_m] at the grocery store once.
It’s true that [name_m]Soren[/name_m] is the much more familiar spelling, and I admit to preferring it, but the meaning of [name_m]Sorin[/name_m] is lovely and it’s a legitimate name; it’s not like you’re making up a variant. I feel like that’s sort of like using [name_f]Lidia[/name_f] over [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] - is [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] much more familiar? Sure is. But that doesn’t make [name_f]Lidia[/name_f] any less legitimate, and it’s still a super lovely name. I like the look of [name_m]Sorin[/name_m] next to [name_u]Moses[/name_u] & [name_u]August[/name_u] a bit more, but I personally like [name_m]Soren[/name_m] better in general. Either way, it’s a handsome name, and I don’t think I’d recommend ruling out [name_m]Sorin[/name_m] just because it’s less common than [name_m]Soren[/name_m]! I wouldn’t be surprised if you don’t have to spell it anyway; I would focus more on just picking the spelling you both like best collectively.
Good luck!
Personally I prefer [name_m]Soren[/name_m]. [name_u]Love[/name_u] all three together!
[name_m]Can[/name_m] I ask you- how old is your [name_u]August[/name_u]? [name_u]August[/name_u] is a top pick for a boy for baby #3, but one thing holding me back is the nickname [name_m]Auggie[/name_m], which I don’t really love. Someone also mentioned they feel the name is getting popular and may feel dated. Wondering what your experience has been with meeting other Augusts and also nicknames?
[name_f]My[/name_f] [name_u]August[/name_u] is 2 1/2. I feel the same way about [name_m]Auggie[/name_m], but the only person who uses it is his older brother, and it’s easier to like when it’s in a 5-year-old’s voice.
We call him [name_u]Gus[/name_u] if using a nickname at all.
Most people who learn his name comment that they know an [name_u]August[/name_u] somehow, but we’ve only met two. One is his age that moved into our neighborhood, which is a little confusing. (But his mom’s name is [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] so she doesn’t care lol.) Another was in big brother’s kindergarten class. I’ll be happy as long as he doesn’t have to go by his last initial in school. Again, we gave him a middle name that’s much more unusual - this is something we do on purpose so they can choose between a common and less common name.
I don’t know if [name_m]Soren[/name_m] will come across as dated. It’s so high on nameberry’s list, but so low on the actual US census. I think more people like it than actually use it. Fingers crossed.
