In about a month, our family will be welcoming a baby girl, and hopefully by then we will have decided on a name.
Although there are a number of names my husband and I like, nothing seems right. In fact, until today, we haven’t really had a short list to work off of.
We have a boy, [name_m]Greyson[/name_m] [name_u]Michael[/name_u] and a girl, [name_u]Avery[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]. We seem to like popular/semi-popular names (although this is not at all a deal breaker) and both [name_u]Michael[/name_u] and [name_f]Marie[/name_f] are honor names. Our last name starts with a H, is one syllable and ends with an ‘s’ sound. Because of our short last name, a first name with at least two syllables is preferable, and any name beginning with an H is out.
The middle names we are considering are:
[name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_f]Ellen[/name_f]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
Right now, the first names we like are:
[name_f]Lyla[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]
Any suggestions or thoughts would be helpful. I would just like to have this figured out. Thanks!
Personally, I like Lydia and Sylvia best from your list but I think Lyla works better with your other kids names. I wouldn’t go with something ultra feminine just because Greyson and Avery could sound like brothers.

I’m going to be different and say I don’t like [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] at all. [name_u]Avery[/name_u] is a really unisex name, is that something you’d want to do with this daughter too?
I think @Bedhead has some great suggestions that better match your style. Some more trendy names that I think work with your preferred middle names (and don’t start with H):
[name_f]Lyla[/name_f] seems to fit best with [name_m]Greyson[/name_m] and [name_u]Avery[/name_u], though I would recommend something more unisex to fit even better.
Like others, I prefer something not too feminine. I also like the y connecting the names, so I can see where [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] is coming from. Maybe [name_u]Skylar[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], or [name_u]Delaney[/name_u] [name_f]Mae[/name_f].
I do not think that [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] matches your other childrens names; I think [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] does though! And it sounds really nice with [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] as well as [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. I also like [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] but I’m thinking that you’re not considering [name_f]Rose[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] as fn? [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] and [name_u]Kendall[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] would also be cute @esita
Agree that [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] fits best with your children’s names, but that a slightly more unisex name would fit even better. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]May[/name_f] or [name_f]Rose[/name_f] as a middle name!
[name_f]Lyla[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] is lovely but I prefer the spelling [name_f]Lila[/name_f] or [name_f]Lilah[/name_f]. [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] are also sunning combos. I don’t know that you need anymore help, you have three fabulous combos already! But since I adore sharing names and you did insist, here are some other names to consider that I think fit the more modern/popular style of your other children’s names:
[name_m]Greyson[/name_m], [name_u]Avery[/name_u] and [name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_m]Greyson[/name_m], [name_u]Avery[/name_u] and [name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_m]Greyson[/name_m], [name_u]Avery[/name_u] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]
[name_m]Greyson[/name_m], [name_u]Avery[/name_u] and [name_u]Rylee[/name_u]
[name_m]Greyson[/name_m], [name_u]Avery[/name_u] and [name_f]Zoey[/name_f]
[name_m]Greyson[/name_m], [name_u]Avery[/name_u] and [name_u]Paisley[/name_u]
[name_m]Greyson[/name_m], [name_u]Avery[/name_u] and [name_u]Piper[/name_u]
[name_m]Greyson[/name_m], [name_u]Avery[/name_u] and [name_u]Everly[/name_u]
[name_m]Greyson[/name_m], [name_u]Avery[/name_u] and [name_u]Finley[/name_u]
[name_m]Greyson[/name_m], [name_u]Avery[/name_u] and [name_u]Hadley[/name_u]
As a middle I would pick [name_f]May[/name_f] just because you used [name_u]Michael[/name_u] and [name_f]Marie[/name_f] and I like that they all start with M.
[name_m]Greyson[/name_m] [name_u]Michael[/name_u], [name_u]Avery[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] and [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f]! This is my absolute favorite! Although I think [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] work perfectly as well!
I do have a tendency of liking gender neutral/less frilly girl names, but am having trouble finding a good fit.
I live the name [name_u]Harper[/name_u], but it sounds weird with our H last name. I love [name_u]Sydney[/name_u], but do not like the nn [name_u]Syd[/name_u]. I like [name_u]Piper[/name_u], but am not 100%. My husband likes [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], which I like too, but with our one syllable last name, I’d prefer something at least two syllables for the first name.
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f], [name_f]Calla[/name_f], [name_f]Carys[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Isla[/name_f], and [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] are all names I like too, but am just not sure about.
Who knew naming a baby would be this difficult?
I suppose, worst case scenario, we’ll just wait until she’s born and see what she looks like.
From your list, I like [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] the most. I don’t care for [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] with [name_u]Avery[/name_u] as I sort of trip over saying the names together. All else being equal, I think it would be great to go with [name_f]May[/name_f] as the middle name (all three with the middle initial M). However, if you plan on having more kids, it might be worth breaking that pattern now. [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] and [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] are both lovely.
I agree with some others that a unisex or surname would work bet with your children’s names. If you like [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], but it is too short, how about [name_m]Quinlan[/name_m]? It is an Irish surname, I think it could work for a girl. I think [name_u]Piper[/name_u] is a fantastic choice, it is so similar to [name_u]Harper[/name_u].
