Name help for our first baby! Hermione, Amelia or....?

DH and I are having our first baby and both our doctor and ultrasound tech have said it’s a girl. DH is more of a veto-er than anything else so managed to corner him after more than a month of trying to get him to make suggestions with a huge list of names and got him to narrow it down to which ones are acceptable. It hasn’t been easy since I love names from books or historical/mythological while he likes more traditional names. Also I worry about popularity and dating (mainly because I have a really dated name that is a grandma/boring name).

Our last name is one syllable and sounds like Loud but without the letter D. No middle name as we will have a Chinese name as a middle name.

If by some strange chance the baby is a boy, we’ve agreed on [name_m]Caspar[/name_m]/[name_m]Caspian[/name_m]. I don’t think he realises [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] is a character from Narnia. He just likes how adventurous it sounds! If our 2nd child is a boy (looking way ahead!), this will also be the name.

Anyway, here’s our list:

[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] (Amy or Millie) - DH’s favourite. He likes the sound of it and it doesn’t hurt that it’s the name of a Doctor Who companion. It ranked 6 last year in NSW, Australia where we live so I’m worried it may be too popular and verging on trendy with its recent upswing. DH doesn’t mind popularity as he has a super common first name and was always referred by his last name at school.

[name_f]Aurelia/name_f - BIL did mention he considered it for their first child but it sounded too much like areola and he couldn’t get over it. My second or third favourite pick.

[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] (Lulu or Ellie) - DH isn’t sure he likes the Louise sound though. I like how sassy it sounds particularly due to the children’s book character.

[name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f] (Esme) - like Esme by itself but doesn’t work by itself with the last name as sounds abrupt so needed to make it longer so it flowed better. My suggestion based off the amazing character of Esme Weatherwax from Discworld. I love the idea of my little girl having a strong book role model when she learns to read to keep her interested since I’m from a family that adores reading. However I worry it’s a bit long and frilly for an adult. Tied for 2nd or 3rd for me.

[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] (Mione) - my favourite and I figure by the time she’s old enough to go to school and the kids are old enough to read the books (8-9 years?), Harry Potter won’t be a big deal. Love that it has a strong female role model and classical roots. DH is worried because he says she’ll end up being a bossy know-it-all like me and hence get bullied. Every time she answers a question it’d be 10 points to Gryffindor.

[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] (Izzy or Belle) - too popular? Particular since it’ll sound identical to Isobel and Isabel and similar to Isabella. Add all those names together and it’s probably the #1 or #2 girl name where we live (only possibly eclipsed by Sofia/Sophie/Sophia).

[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] (Maddie) - inspired from the children’ books (different spelling and pronunciation) and a so-so choice for me and the DH. Would be pronounced Mad-uh-leen.

Other names considered:
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] - DH vetoed
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] - DH vetoed and I was unsure because of tragic story
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f] - DH said it annoyed him that it was Melody without the M.
[name_f]Arielle[/name_f] - DH favourite but I didn’t really like the little mermaid reference and was uncertain how it would sound as an adult if she wanted to be a judge, doctor etc.
[name_f]Giselle[/name_f] - DH liked but we both disliked the first syllable.
[name_f]Danielle[/name_f] - DH adores but I find it reminds me of the 80s.

Any opinions would help along with any other suggestions! And eek, this post turned out longer than I thought.

[name_f]LOVE[/name_f] your name options. [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is my all time favorite girl’s name (DH vetoed it unfortunately). Use it!!! Please! The world needs more Hermiones.

I like the others too. [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] or [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] would be my next choices, though they’re both very popular.

Other literary names I like: [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], and [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] but unfortunate with our last name it’d be too alliterative and not in a good way! And the world definitely needs more little girls who will be Hermiones!

I agree with [name_f]Molly[/name_f], the world needs more Hermiones, lol. I really like [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] and am a big fan of Miss [name_m]Granger[/name_m]. [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] is a very close second.

What’s the Chinese middle, if I may ask?

My favorite is [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. I like it on it’s own - and it has adorable nicknames like [name_f]Amy[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f] … [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] is also sweet. And I mentioned the most common ones, well there is a reason these two are really popular. [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is also adorable.

I’m a bit indifferent against the other names. [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] are nice enough. I’m not a fan of [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f] and Elose.

I’m not much of a [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] fan, but [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is a very cute name and should be more popular! Thanks to the [name_f]Princess[/name_f] Diaries, I love [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] (and you could also use the nickname [name_f]Mia[/name_f]!) [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is a good name also!

Other names:
[name_u]Dakota[/name_u], [name_f]Serena[/name_f], [name_u]Wren[/name_u], Serrah, [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], Mikasa

[name_f]Hermione[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], and [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] are my favorites from your list. I really like [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f], but I’m not a fan of [name_f]Esme[/name_f] because [name_f]Esme[/name_f] Squalor from A Series of Unfortunate Events is my first reference instead of Granny Weatherwax (though I love Granny). I really like the rest of your list, too.

If you need combinations, [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] is quite lovely. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though you’ve vetoed these, [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Giselle[/name_f] and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Arielle[/name_f] are nice, too. [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] are nice, too.

[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] please… She’s not just a know-it-all… She’s also brave, smart, funny and an amazing friend. All excellent qualities in any child.

Unfortunately, [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] will always be a big deal. Your husband is right. I like [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] the best, but if you’re worried about popularity, I like [name_f]Danielle[/name_f] and [name_f]Eloise[/name_f].
