Name Hunt (Girls Edition/Number I've Lost Track)

Updated October 25:

She’s here! I took the top-ranking Post-It Notes from my husband’s last turn and stuffed them into the hospital bag on the way out the door. The top individual names left were Georgia and Constance, and the top combos were Georgia Nivika Rose (prn NIV-ih-kuh), Georgia Andromeda Lucy, and Georgia Constance Rose.

After she arrived, it didn’t take long to decide on Georgia, and then we settled on the middle names. We discussed a few options still at home, but it was really down to the final combos on the cards. Georgia Nivika Rose won as the name that seemed most fitting for our little girl.

Constance ended up losing out in the end because I decided that the combo Georgia Constance reminded me too much of George Costanza from Seinfeld, and the flow was off if we put Rose or Nivika as the first middle with Constance at the end. Also, we wanted to keep the second-middle spot open to throw in the Doctor Who nod for the big brothers. (Their faces were PRICELESS when they found out we had included the Doctor Who name in the combo! Just priceless!).

It was really the journey for us this time, but my husband and I agree that it really required “the journey” to get us to come around to this conclusion. Truth be told, I had been pining Georgiana the whole summer so it was hard to get anything to measure up, and it took a long time for ME to compromise on Georgia (interestingly, it suits her so well, I wonder if I would have changed her name to Georgia anyway, even if Georgiana had been approved). My husband took a long time to come around to Georgia because he had only met one person with the name and he thought it was this super-rare and unheard-of name. He felt a lot better about it when I told him it was a Top 250 name ranking lower than D a i s y and higher than E v e on the charts (see how much it’s really about how much he has HEARD the name before! Georgia, Constance and Andromeda were the final three and Georgia was the name he was concerned about being too unusual!). At the same time, if I hadn’t been madly searching and leaving no-stone-unturned, I might never have discovered Nivika. I’m pretty happy with this one as the third-generation update of Niki and Nicole. Nivika isn’t etymologically related to the Nicole variants, but it’s a Norse name, which connects to our family heritage.

Thanks for all the input and discussion over the long journey!

I can’t figure out how to make that image show up as an image instead of just a link… but it’s the Bathroom Mirror Post-It-Notes Name Game! My husband said, “Oh, I see how you get me to play… make it a game, huh?” He’s a mad gamer, so yeah. It’s just a pity that it took me until the end of pregnancy #6 to think of this!

The smaller notes have individual names and the larger notes have combos. There is a “discard pile” at the bottom of the mirror. If a name gets put there, the other parent can still move it back on the list but it gets an “X” strike marked on it.

Current standings:
Georgia
Constance
Andromeda
Iolanthe
Rowenna

I’m pretty excited that my husband moved Georgia up to first place - and it has been there for two days! Working on hammering out a great combo for that one. He really wants Rose as the second middle and one of our long-running favorites for the first middle. At the moment, his favorite ideas are Georgia Nivika Rose, and Georgia Constance Nivika Rose.

Squee! I wanted Georgiana at the beginning so I’ll be pretty happy if we can compromise on Georgia.

Of this list, I like Nivika best

[name_f]Astoria[/name_f] is very pretty, never thought of it as a name before.

[name_f]Astoria[/name_f] is beautiful, my favorite of your list.

What happened to [name_f]Zelia[/name_f]??? That is by far my favorite still. I like [name_f]Astoria[/name_f]…but I have family in [name_f]Astoria[/name_f], Queens…so the place connection is too much of a thing for me. I’m not really convinced about [name_f]Stormy[/name_f] as a nickname. If you like [name_f]Stormy[/name_f], I would just use that name…but [name_f]Zelia[/name_f] is so much prettier!

Nivika is okay, but I have a hard time deciding which syllable to emphasize…I do not like [name_f]Una[/name_f] and especially [name_f]Unna[/name_f]. I just think of Uno and the sound isn’t appealing to me. I’ve never heard of Veslemay and so I do not know how to pronounce it. I love [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] and Gweneira. They are better for me than [name_f]Astoria[/name_f]. [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] is okay but kind of bland next to your other children. Iselda is lovely…so it would be choice after the [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] names. [name_f]Constance[/name_f] is a cool name, but I prefer it as a middle. I can’t not mention it again: [name_f]Zelia[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] was absolutely darling and none of the other names live up to it now…for me. But I guess [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] or Gweneira or Iselda would be my next choices.

I love your names (as always :))

[name_f]Unna[/name_f]/[name_f]Una[/name_f]- I think this is pretty! It’s a short but warm name, and I’m fairly sure it’s extremely pronounceable. I would prefer it with the double n.
[name_f]Astoria[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Stormy[/name_f]?)- This is very beautiful and regal and the nickname [name_f]Stormy[/name_f] is just too cute! No problems saying this one, but I suppose some people who are not as good with names might. I think mispronounciation will be rare, however, so I wouldn’t let that stop you.
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]- this was actually my favorite name when I first got into names, so what memories! It’s a fairly preppy name that makes me think of the royal family and would sibset E v e and D u l c i n e a extraordinarily. Of course, no pronunciation trouble here.
Gweneira- I dislike GW names but even this I found very pretty. It’s newer than the usual [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], etc. Might have a bit of pronunciation trouble on the ei part.
[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]- Gw names are not my thing, really… I’m going to pass commenting on this one.
Veslemay (originally Veslemøy)- Okay, I don’t know how to pronounce this. It looks beautiful, but I actually really don’t know how to say it. [name_m]How[/name_m] would you say it?
Nivika- Pretty and creative. I think it sounds very Norwegian, if you like that. I doubt many pronunciation errors will be made.
[name_f]Constance[/name_f]- I simply dislike this name… :frowning: it’s just quite the opposite of my style.
Iselda nn [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]- Very pretty, mythological, and has a nice nickname. What else can I say?

I have to say, I miss [name_f]Zelia[/name_f]. What happened to it?

Best,
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]

[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] feel too mainstream compared to your kiddos’ names, honestly. They’re both beautiful, though. I think [name_f]Una[/name_f] (spelled this way; I think [name_f]Unna[/name_f] will be pronounced with a short u sound), [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] and Iselda are my favorites. I like these because they’re familiar but still hidden gems? That’s the same feel I get from your other kids’ names, so I would assume that’s the direction you’d go in with this bubba? I think Veslemay is just too much for an American kid. I know you love [name_f]Constance[/name_f], but I can’t get past “constipated.” I think this one is also so bland and fussy compared to the other names on your list. Nivika is alright, but I’m just not sure which syllable to pronounce and I think it doesn’t fit in very well with E and D’s names. (Doesn’t necessarily have to, either; no one really knows your sibling names and it really doesn’t matter anyways. It just feels stylistically very different?) Fingers crossed you’ll come to a conclusion soon!

My personal favorite is [name_f]Constance[/name_f]! I find it absolutely stunning, and Iam surprised its not popular. The only drawback I think is the nickname [name_f]Conny[/name_f].

[name_f]Una[/name_f], [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] and [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] are my second choices. Great names, especially [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]. [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] is fitting more in your sibset though.

Gweneira, Veslemay, Nivika seem to me more difficult names to use. They arent way too out there but they seem hard to wear. Gweneira sounds the most usable out of this three, especially with the adorable nickname [name_f]Eira[/name_f].

[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] is okay, it just seems too common & plain next to your kids names. Maybe [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] or [name_f]Georgina[/name_f]?

Iselda nn [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]: Its beautiful but I find Iselda short enough to not need a nickname. And [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] seems like a whole different name, that you can use on its own. Maybe its just me though.

Good luck!

I like:
[name_f]Una[/name_f] – I think [name_f]Una[/name_f] is fun and spunky, but it’s not the best to balance out your other daughters’ names (if that doesn’t bother you, I think this one is my favourite!).
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] – Southern and sweet, but it feels a bit off style-wise with your other kids. I really like it, though!
Gweneira – Pretty and has that ‘fairytale vibe’ I feel is present in your other children’s names.
Iselda ‘[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]’ – My favourite! It makes me think of an ice princess,

and I’m intrigued by [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] “[name_f]Stormy[/name_f]”. Very elegant and unexpected.

[name_f]Unna[/name_f]/[name_f]Una[/name_f] – I really like the meaning of ‘(to) love’. She’s short and sweet, with a nice strength and zest.
[name_f]Astoria[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Stormy[/name_f]?) – [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] has such a great sound and vibe - ancient, fairy-tale like feel. [name_f]Stormy[/name_f] makes a very cute nickname.
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] – Honestly, while sure it’s a nice name, in comparison to your other names, it’s extremely bland.
Gweneira – I love this, though do prefer the [name_f]Gwyneira[/name_f] spelling myself. Gweneira just feels, like, uneven/unbalanced, to me.
[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] – Nice, but a little more on the [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] side for me.
Veslemay (originally Veslemøy) – I really like Veslemøy and her meaning. I do think however that it would be better suited as a middle name. As a first, you/she might well get a great many ‘what the?’ type looks. I don’t suppose you/he dig Vesna? Different origin and lacking the ‘may’ type sound, however, similar in part…?
Nivika – I do like this one quite a bit, but a good part of me just can’t seem to get past it’s trendy type of look. It’s got a lovely sound.
[name_f]Constance[/name_f] – See [name_f]Georgia[/name_f].
Iselda nn [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] – very nice. I like the softness of Iselda and the zestiness of [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. Nice.

Of this list, my favourites are [name_f]Astoria[/name_f], Iselda & [name_f]Una[/name_f].

Thanks for the input so far, it is really quite helpful. I rather thought that Nivika might have people confused on pronunciation, but it seems that Veslemay is the intimidating, seems-harder-than-it-is name. We will probably let that one go.

[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] was my first choice this pregnancy, but my husband made faces as if I was killing him. It’s apparently just way too fussy for him. [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] is the counter-offer he finds more palatable. Interesting that the opinions are split as to whether it’s a great match with the girls’ names vs it being too mainstream.

Iselda is another compromise option, my husband prefers [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], but I like the meaning of Iselda better, and we already have a boy with a Z name, and I think it’s a little nicer to have a different letter. I don’t really think Iselda needs a nn, but I’m just being realistic that she would likely get called [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. And I’d prefer that over something like [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] any day or night.

As for [name_f]Zelia[/name_f], it just didn’t make my Top Ten. [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] was the tenth but I already dropped that one. Sorry to disappoint the fans…

I’m interested in other votes for favorites/comments, if anyone is so inclined. With nearly 350 views on this thread, it seems that there are probably more people out there.

Of your new list I really love [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f], Gweneira, Iselda, and [name_f]Constance[/name_f]. I think Veslemay and Nivika are the ones that would be challenging for most people to pronounce/spell.

[name_f]Astoria[/name_f] is amazing

Veslemay sounds like a medication to me, sorry.

My favorite is [name_f]Astoria[/name_f]. It’s just right - interesting yet not unfamiliar ‘a hidden gem’, lyrical, pretty, energetic, with cute and fun nns to boot. It has a ‘light’ feel which I think [name_f]Eve[/name_f] and [name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f] do, too. A pp said fairytale feel which I think is a perfect summary. I like how it’s similar to all the star words - [name_f]Astra[/name_f], astro, etc…and the flower (aster, which is a lovely tie-in with sisters!), and the word story, which naming this girl has been one! Overall it seems a name I think any kind of girl/woman could be happy wearing!
Iselda is my second favorite. It’s not as pretty or whimsical as [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] imo, and I’ve never heard the name [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_m]IRL[/name_m] and thought, ‘whoa, that’s just gorgeous!’, but I like it and it has an off-beat charm and a ‘serious yet likeable and intelligent’ vibe to me. My only downside to it is it reminds me slightly of [name_f]Imelda[/name_f] [name_m]Marcos[/name_m], but that’s faint and I imagine no issue at all for the younger crowd.
I really love [name_f]Una[/name_f] (I like the double oo’s best myself) and I think it’s a sweet, happy, yet intriguing and not overly heard name. It’s just not as fairytale as [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] or even Iselda, imo.
Gweneira is really pretty. I think I’d be pretty impressed if I met a little girl with this name. And I like the nn [name_f]Eira[/name_f], too. Really lovely!
[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] is ok to me. It’s truly a name that I don’t gush over when I hear it, but I don’t dislike it. I do really like the nn [name_f]Wendy[/name_f] for you, for its fairytale/[name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Pan[/name_m] vibe.
Veslemay - it’s nice, in theory. But I don’t like the [name_f]May[/name_f] nn for your fall baby, and Vesla seems very Nordic, in maybe a ‘not so pretty but clunky’ way.
Nivika - I like this but I prefer Nikolaia by miles. I would truly be intrigued if I met a little girl named this, though, and I could see it really growing on me.
[name_f]Constance[/name_f] - well, I won’t say a word, but I do like the nn [name_f]Tansy[/name_f]!
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] - my dads name is [name_m]George[/name_m] and the whole time we were growing up everyone in my entire family (including me dad) thought this was the worst name of all time. We couldn’t imagine why our grandma picked it. It didn’t sound at all pleasing to any of us. Now it is coming back into fashion and it has grown on me quite a bit, but I would never claim it as a personal favorite. I do think it makes your girls names overall much more mainstream and current, and that would be fine, imo. [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] make for a fine, slightly English-sounding, sweet set.

I read summaries of all the reviews off for my husband tonight (along with reviews from the Nameberry mommies and my other Name Nerd friends) and I think you all have talked him out of Veslemay for sure and maybe Nivika as well. He says he will think about [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] as the current front runner.  So we’ll see where it goes. I’m still a little afraid to trust that idea since it just came on my list last week. Sometimes I get these mad crushes and then they fall off after a couple of weeks. I did rather fall in love with the idea after I saw this listing though: Asthoria - Meaning of Asthoria, What does Asthoria mean?

It means treasure? [name_m]How[/name_m] sweet is that! (And I had never heard of Asthore before!). This name really seems to embody a lot iof the big picture ideas you’ve been investigating the last few months, plus now such a lovely literature tie-in!

I love [name_f]Astoria[/name_f]. [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is beautiful… The flow is flawless. I am not sold on the nn [name_f]Stormy[/name_f] however. It could grow on me, but I don’t find it intuitive. [name_u]Story[/name_u] feels like the natural nn and I love it. ([name_f]Tori[/name_f], [name_u]Rory[/name_u], [name_f]Ria[/name_f], or Riri Could work also)

Iselda is wonderful as well and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]
Is cute. If you think she would
Go by [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] most of the time
I may not use it just because of the repeat Z names in the family. But that’s just me.

Veslemay is confusing to me. I forsee many pronunciation and spelling issues as well as blank stares. That may not bother you at all though.

The others all fall in neutral territory for me. They are all nice, but do not evoke a strong reaction from me one way or the other.

@mousehouse - Yes, very sweet. A bit close to Z e p h a n’s name meaning perhaps, but not a deal-killer, and yes, it does fit nicely with the “themes” I’ve been trying to find! I’m missing the literature connection (unless you mean the “story” in it?), though I did find an Irish folk song. My husband’s family are Irish so an Irish word-name makes me happy (not has happy as a Norwegian word name, but you know… )

@vitamom - Thanks for the input. I don’t want to use a nn that is TOO far off. We call her [name_f]Stormy[/name_f] now, and [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] is the closest I could find for an “intuitive” nn option. I would consider other names if there’s something closer. We have talked about using [name_f]Stormy[/name_f] as the official name, but it seems kind of limiting for an adult. I agree that [name_u]Story[/name_u] would be more intuitive, I wish I loved it, though I don’t hate it either, and you have some other good nn ideas too. [name_f]Astra[/name_f] and [name_f]Rora[/name_f] were on our list for a long time and I could see those as options too.

[name_f]Astoria[/name_f] is my favorite!

[name_f]Astoria[/name_f] is by far my favorite. [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is gorgeous.

[name_f]Stormy[/name_f], as lovely as it is, isn’t as intuitive for a nickname as I usually prefer, however it’s not too far off to work. I agree with the pp that [name_u]Story[/name_u] seems more intuitive. [name_f]Ria[/name_f] or [name_f]Astra[/name_f] could world. [name_u]Rory[/name_u] or [name_f]Rora[/name_f] could work as well.

I think Iselda is my second choice. I’m not overly keen on [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], however I think Zelly is adorable as a nickname.

[name_f]Glad[/name_f] to see you are finalizing some options!
