[name]Hi[/name] there. We just found out our second baby is a girl!
We are very excited but haven’t found a name yet that we love.
As with our son [name]Gabriel[/name], we want to stick to a Biblical theme. There are some lovely women names in the Bible, but none really stand out to both of us. There are also some great place names, like [name]Bethany[/name], [name]Eden[/name] and [name]Moriah[/name].
Anyway, I was hoping for some ideas inspired by the Bible but not necessarily as people. For example: [name]Lily[/name].
Any suggestions?
This isn’t a place name or anything but how about [name]Jemima[/name]? It’s an uncommon biblical name.
We live in the Southeastern U.S. It’s a beautiful name but because of racial stereotypes, that wouldn’t work.
We do like the names [name]Eve[/name], [name]Susannah[/name], [name]Lydia[/name], [name]Naomi[/name], [name]Tabitha[/name], [name]Magdalen[/name] and [name]Ruth[/name]. But we haven’t had that ah-ha moment yet.
We also have [name]Noelle[/name] on our list, and I like [name]Ruby[/name], although my husband doesn’t.
[name]Selah[/name], [name]Samaria[/name], [name]Dinah[/name], Nebuchadnezzer…just kidding on the last one.
[name]Esther[/name]
[name]Mary[/name]
[name]Rebekah[/name]
I like [name]Bethany[/name] and [name]Gabriel[/name]
[name]Moriah[/name], which you already mentioned, would be my suggestion! I [name]ADORE[/name] that name/spelling!
[name]Shiloh[/name] (a town)
Cherith (a brook, pronounced CHAIR-ith)
[name]Selah[/name] (a musical term used in the Psalms)
[name]Eppie[/name] (a nickname for obscure female name [name]Hepzibah[/name])
[name]Shalom[/name] (Hebrew term meaning "peace)
[name]Angel[/name]
[name]Olive[/name] (Mount of Olives)
[name]Do[/name] you like virtue names? That might be a direction to go. Also another way to go is to choose a verse for you daughter and the choose a name based on the verse. We did this for our girls and while they do not have the typical Biblical names the meanings of their names relates to scripture.
Oooh, I really like [name]Eve[/name], [name]Lydia[/name], and [name]Magdalen[/name]/[name]Magdalena[/name]/[name]Magda[/name] on your list! [name]Noelle[/name] is very pretty, too. And I love the idea of [name]Lily[/name]! With the whole [name]Lily[/name] of the [name]Valley[/name] reference… that’s half the reason it’s on my own list, haha.
My favorite Biblical names are [name]Rachel[/name] and [name]Hannah[/name]… I know they’re not as fresh as some of the names on your list, but I think they’re so charming. Would you consider a name with a [name]Christian[/name] meaning? I think you might have more options there.
A few ideas:
[name]Arielle[/name] (means “lion of God”, which is nice, I think)
[name]Ariana[/name]/[name]Arianne[/name] (“very holy one”)
[name]Isabelle[/name]/a, [name]Lillian[/name], [name]Elise[/name], [name]Lisette[/name], etc. (all variants on [name]Elizabeth[/name], which is of course Biblical. I love their meaning, “my God is a vow”!)
[name]Evangeline[/name] (“bearer of good news”… very fitting for a [name]Christian[/name], I think!)
[name]Grace[/name] (as well as other virtue names… they’re all quite meaningful, imo. [name]Grace[/name], [name]Faith[/name], [name]Hope[/name], [name]Nadia[/name] (which means “hope”), [name]Verity[/name], [name]Felicity[/name], [name]Mercy[/name], etc.)
[name]Anastasia[/name] (means “resurrection”)
[name]Angelina[/name]/[name]Seraphina[/name] (names relating to angels)
[name]Celeste[/name] (means “heavenly”)
[name]Christiana[/name] (as well as [name]Krista[/name], [name]Christine[/name], [name]Christina[/name], etc.–all mean “follower of [name]Christ[/name]”)
[name]Dorothy[/name]/[name]Dorothea[/name] (means “gift of God”)
[name]Helena[/name]/[name]Eleni[/name]/[name]Eilidh[/name]/[name]Helen[/name]/[name]Eileen[/name]/[name]Elena[/name]/etc. ([name]Helen[/name] and its variants mean “wicker; reed; shoot; torch; basket”–all of which have quite a bit of Biblical significance… the “torch” meaning reminds me of Psalm 119:11 (Thy word is a lamp onto my feet and a light unto my path), and the wicker meaning reminds me of another Bible verse I heard somewhere… I’ve been trying to find it for a while but still haven’t been able to, but I do like how much [name]Helena[/name] and [name]Eleni[/name] remind me of symbolism in the Bible)
[name]Lucy[/name]/[name]Lucia[/name] (mean “light”, which could be a reference to God)
[name]Clara[/name]/[name]Claire[/name] (mean “clear/bright”… I guess it doesn’t have a huge tie to Christianity and the Bible, but I’ve always felt that these two names remind me of how much everything makes so much more sense with God, how God is my clarity. Along that line of thinking, [name]Clarity[/name] nn [name]Clare[/name]/[name]Clara[/name] might be nice…)
[name]Jane[/name]/[name]Johanna[/name]/[name]Giovanna[/name]/etc. (all feminine forms of [name]John[/name])
[name]Josephine[/name] (feminine form of [name]Joseph[/name]… along this line, there are a lot of names that could work, I think…)
[name]Eleanor[/name] (some sources say this means “God is my light”)
[name]Keren[/name] (one of [name]Job[/name]'s daughter’s names. I’ve always found this more appealing than [name]Karen[/name])
[name]Lena[/name] (could be a nn for [name]Helena[/name] or [name]Eleanor[/name], or even [name]Magdalena[/name]… it’s nice just on its own, though. I love that it means “the bright one”!)
[name]Lola[/name] (has more Catholic [name]Christian[/name] connotations than Protestant [name]Christian[/name], but it’s still lovely! I think it’s nice as a nn for something like [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Elodie[/name], etc., although those don’t have the [name]Christian[/name] connotations, really)
[name]Madelaine[/name]/[name]Madeleine[/name]/[name]Magda[/name]/[name]Magdalena[/name] (alternatives for [name]Magdalen[/name]… I especially like [name]Madelaine[/name] atm!)
[name]Natalie[/name] (works just like [name]Noelle[/name] does, imo–means “[name]Christ[/name]'s birthday”)
[name]Olivia[/name]/[name]Olive[/name] (I love the Biblical connection of Psalm 52:8 with these two… The verse says: “But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love forever and ever.”)
[name]Phoebe[/name] (I can’t remember where it is, but I remember hearing that there’s a [name]Phoebe[/name] in the Bible)
[name]Julia[/name] (see [name]Phoebe[/name]! I think she was one of the women who went to see [name]Jesus[/name] in His tomb, but I could be mistaken!)
[name]Renee[/name]/[name]Renata[/name] (means “reborn”)
[name]Theodora[/name] (means “gift of God”)
[name]Sophia[/name]/[name]Zoe[/name] (not a ton of religious significance, but I remember that these were two of the first words I learned when I learned Koine Greek, which is the language predominantly used in the New Testament, when I was a theology major. Their meanings, “wisdom” and “life” respectively, have nice [name]Christian[/name] connotations, though.)
[name]Arabella[/name] (I’ve heard varying accounts, but I think I’ve heard most consistently that [name]Arabella[/name] means “prayerful; prayerful one”)
[name]Davina[/name] (feminine form of [name]David[/name]. I always thought it was pretty!)
Good luck!
Oh! Also, [name]Faith[/name], [name]Hope[/name], and [name]Charity[/name]. But the greatest of these is [name]Charity[/name].
Lots of great suggestions!
alzora, you made me laugh
[name]Selah[/name] is definitely on our list, and we’ll take a good look at virtue names!
Thanks everyone.

[name]Mercy[/name]
[name]Patience[/name]
[name]Glory[/name]
[name]Verity[/name]
[name]Joy[/name]
[name]Merry[/name]
[name]Hope[/name]
[name]Victory[/name]
Hm. Well there’s [name]Christ[/name]ina/[name]Christ[/name]ine. I think those are really pretty. [name]Genesis[/name] is one, if you like names like that. [name]Faith[/name] is nice. I really love your example, [name]Lily[/name].
I live in the South too, and I’ve had several African American students named after the daughters of [name]Job[/name]: [name]Jemima[/name], [name]Keziah[/name], and [name]Keren[/name]. I don’t think that [name]Jemima[/name] is an issue, at least not here in Florabama…
My favourite name is my own, [name]Michal[/name], which means brook. [name]Michal[/name] was the wife of [name]David[/name] and the daughter of [name]Saul[/name].
[name]Shalom[/name] is used almost exclusively for men. Shaloma (ie, [name]Salome[/name]) is the feminine form.
What about [name]Simcha[/name]? It is used for both males and females and means great joy; a blessing; as in, we are celebrating our simcha, the birth of a child.
Aviya/[name]Abijah[/name] is also a name used for both males and females in [name]Israel[/name] and in the Bible. I also love [name]Avra[/name] too, and I went to school with an [name]Abitha[/name].
I’ve always found [name]Emmanuelle[/name] beautiful - means “God is with us” in Hebrew
[name]Eden[/name] is another on my list, and means “place of pleasure”
I believe the name [name]Keturah[/name] is from the bible. I think it means Frankincense which was brought to baby [name]Jesus[/name]?
I’ve been a fan of the name since I read a story with the main character named [name]Keturah[/name]. It’s lovely.
Also, perhaps something that means [name]Dove[/name]?
Ohh, love this! I was trying to think of an example when I had my list, but all I could think of was [name]Jonas[/name]/[name]Jonah[/name]. But [name]Paloma[/name] also means “dove”, I definitely think that could work, and the nns [name]Allie[/name] and [name]Lola[/name] are really cute! I really like [name]Gabriel[/name] and [name]Paloma[/name] together…
I agree with doodleberry - Emmannuelle is nice
[name]Alexandra[/name]
[name]Alexandria[/name]
[name]Isabel[/name]
[name]Jezabel[/name]
[name]Tabitha[/name]
