Name ideas for my characters

I need names for two of my characters and am open to thoughts and suggestions!

The girl is sporty, adventurous, likes all things outdoors, is a free spirit and has a warm personality. She is more on the tomboy side so what better category of name to give her than a unisex name! Haven’t decided on her looks quite yet but she’ll probably have brown hair, a freckled nose, and will be on the shorter side. [name_f]My[/name_f] ideas:

  • [name_u]Ashton[/name_u]/Ashtyn: this is currently my favorite name for her. But I look too much into baby name forums and A LOT of people hate on this name, saying it’s too boyish. I’ve known two females with this name and thought the name suited them. But I want opinions! I don’t want people to hate this character because of her name! Also if you like it, what spelling do you like best?

  • [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] - the alternative to [name_u]Ashton[/name_u]/Ashtyn which people seem to like better. I like [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] but I’m not loving it as much as [name_u]Ashton[/name_u].

  • [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] - this one is actually my favorite. Problem is, I somewhat got my inspiration for my character’s sporty-ness from my good friend named [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] and I’m not too sure if I should use it for my characters name. It’s perfect for her though and I’m still on the fence!

  • [name_u]River[/name_u] - LOVE LOVE this name. It’s perfect for her because of her love of nature and free spirit. But still not entirely sold.

  • [name_u]Shea[/name_u] - knew a girl in college whose name was [name_u]Shea[/name_u], she was very sporty so that’s why I’m considering it.

Now onto boy names. He’s popular, kind of not the nicest person and is supposed to not be well-perceived by the reader. He’s actually almost the complete opposite of the female character listed above. So I need a name that compliments his preppy-ness and a name that people think of when they think of the rude and arrogant popular guy that truly no one likes. The female character’s and his name somewhat need to compliment each other. [name_f]My[/name_f] ideas:

  • [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] - my favorite but I’m torn because it’s also kind of a unisex name and I can’t have both the female and the male to have unisex names.

  • [name_m]Colson[/name_m]/Colton - I like this one but if I go with [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] for the girl, their names would sound too similar and I don’t like that.

That’s about all I’ve come up with for his name
so I need lots of help on this one. Any ideas is much appreciated for both characters!! And if you don’t like the unisex names for the girl, what names do you think would suit her personality?

I don’t think there’s any reason you can’t use unisex names for both your characters! I think that [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] and [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] would work fine. I prefer the spelling of [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] but [name_u]Ashtyn[/name_u] is more feminine. I also like [name_u]Sloane[/name_u], [name_u]Taylor[/name_u], and [name_u]Mallory[/name_u] for her.

Thank you for your input and putting my mind at ease on the unisex names, I overthink everything! I love [name_u]Mallory[/name_u] and am adding it to the long list of options!

I’m IN LOVE with [name_u]Shea[/name_u], but I’ve never been fond of [name_u]Jessie[/name_u], and I even didn’t read a book because main character was named [name_u]Jessie[/name_u](No idea why, I’m really wierd), but also LOOOVE [name_u]Shea[/name_u], and I had a book character named [name_f]Ashlynn[/name_f]. But I like [name_u]Ashton[/name_u]/Ashtyn too.
