Name ideas needed for a male puppy

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] guys!

So excitingly we’re getting a puppy this month and have a little over two weeks to come up with a perfect name. It’s a male black labrador. My family in general isn’t hugely fond of names that are too “human” sounding. So while we’re not looking for stereotypical dog names like Fido or [name_u]Rex[/name_u], we’re also not looking for names like [name_m]George[/name_m] or [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] or [name_u]Riley[/name_u].

We already have one adult male labrador - his name is Balto. Full name is [name_m]Balthasar[/name_m]. So although the name could be given to a child, you don’t often hear the name [name_m]Balthasar[/name_m] on a children’s playground. This means that human names aren’t altogether out of the question, as long as they’re not super popular.

Preferably not names that begin with b? [name_m]Just[/name_m] because I can imagine the confusion. Not out of the question though because some b names aren’t altogether similar.

Additionally, our previous dogs names were: [name_u]Teddy[/name_u], Aztai (female) and Thabo.

Names I’ve liked so far are:

  • [name_m]Monty[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]

I’m drawing a blank here. xD I keep coming up with wonderful female names but alas, the dog is male. Invented, creative names are welcome too!

I like [name_m]Monty[/name_m]! He could be [name_m]Montgomery[/name_m] or [name_m]Montague[/name_m], I think they both work well with [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m]. Balto and [name_m]Monty[/name_m] are cute together.

Other ideas:
[name_m]Zebedee[/name_m]
[name_m]Prosper[/name_m]
[name_m]Melchior[/name_m] (another of the Wise Men)
[name_m]Zebulon[/name_m] (nn [name_m]Zeb[/name_m]?)
[name_m]Odysseus[/name_m]
[name_m]Rochester[/name_m]
[name_m]Octavian[/name_m]
[name_m]Humphrey[/name_m]
[name_m]Algernon[/name_m]

I am also thinking of a male dog name for my new pup in [name_u]June[/name_u]! I had loads of girl names but boy names are harder for me to come up with, too. So far my list is small as well, but I love people names for dogs that are a bit unusual: [name_m]Morty[/name_m], [name_m]Ryder[/name_m], and [name_u]Porter[/name_u].

I love [name_m]Monty[/name_m] and [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] paired with Balto! Others that sound nice to me:

[name_m]Albert[/name_m] ([name_m]Alby[/name_m])
[name_m]Jett[/name_m]
[name_u]Paxton[/name_u] ([name_u]Pax[/name_u])

Wish I could help more! Good luck!

Thank you both for your help!

I agree. I keep coming up with names I love for a female puppy (my choices were [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Nala[/name_f]) but it’s been so much more difficult with a male pup.

Best of luck coming up with your own names - what kind of dog will you be getting in [name_u]June[/name_u]?

Thanks! Luna was on my girls list for a while. I had whittled my favorite girls to Ruby and Mika (like meeka)…if I found a girl pup first, anyway.

He is a Miniature Aussie with a Red tri coat! Google -mini aussie red tri adult- and that’s basically the idea. He is just 3 weeks this Thursday so I have some time to come up with a better list. I’m hoping that once I meet him for the first time a name will stick. I tend to replace the two ‘best’ one day with something else the next day haha.

I know an awesome black lab named Blackjack. He is old and has some hip issues but he’s still kickin’ and LOVES to play in the water.

I still think your original names Monty and Jasper pair well.
some others I thought sounded nice with Balto:

I second the Zeb suggestion
Atticus (nn Kit, Ace, maybe Atlas but could be stretching a bit) edit: I just noticed your “Kit” nn in your signature, so that might be a no-go.
Wyatt
I thought since your other dog is Balto a play on names from the legend of Balto (haha corney maybe): Togo (a bit odd though) or Ivanoff or Ivanov (nn Ivan)

Ooh I think I had [name_f]Meeka[/name_f] on my list as well. And [name_f]Siri[/name_f] - even though there are many obvious issues with this choice. But it’s just such a cute name! I digress…

Aussies are such amazing dogs. Highly intelligent as well. I can imagine a tiny puppy being quite the handful. But labs aren’t the easiest either (so bitey) but you’ve still got some time to come up with the perfect name.

I’ll have to run the top names past my family and I’m not sure if they’ll get shut down fast or not. But my fingers are still crossed for [name_m]Monty[/name_m], as it’s quickly becoming a favourite of mine and I can definitely see the black lab with that name.

[name_m]Zeb[/name_m] is a great suggestion too, so is [name_m]Ace[/name_m]. Yeah, unfortunately I’ve already stolen [name_u]Kit[/name_u] for myself, otherwise it would have been great.

Actually, when my family decided on the name Balto, I did immediately think of the legend. It didn’t play a role in the actual naming of the dog though. [name_m]Just[/name_m] a happy coincidence. (:

I’ve always wanted to get a large black dog and name it [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] “[name_m]Bear[/name_m].” Then I feel like I’d have to get another female, light colored dog and name her [name_f]Titania[/name_f]. lol Anyway, I really love the previous suggestions of [name_m]Montgomery[/name_m] for your [name_m]Monty[/name_m] and [name_m]Zebulon[/name_m] “[name_m]Zeb[/name_m].”
