Name I've never heard before

I met a little girl yesterday named Riegel (pronounced like the word “regal”). I’ve always liked the name [name]Regan[/name] ([name]REE[/name]-gan) because it reminds me of the word “regal,” but for some reason, I’m not all that fond of Riegel itself.

Thoughts?

It sounds familiar…Like I’ve heard it on someone myself before. Either way, I agree, I’m not really that fond of it.

It makes me think of [name]Rigel[/name], the brightest star in the constellation [name]Orion[/name]. For some reason I thought it was pronounced to rhyme with [name]Nigel[/name], but there’s a pronunciation for it on Forvo that matches the one you’ve described. I’m not quite sure which one is right. If they did name her after the star, perhaps they changed the spelling to clear up pronunciation issues. Very interesting!

Maybe it’s a family name. Riegel “ree-gull” is a [name]German[/name] surname; it’s also a nature word having to do with glaciers.

It’s a bit harsh. I think it’d be better on a boy or as a mn but I don’t hate it for a girl

I know a little boy who has it as a mn, and he pronounces it like nigel, with an r instead of the n obviously. He is named after the star.
