Name nerd can't even name her own baby!!!

[name]Hi[/name] fellow name lovers!!! I’m a nameberry regular…which is why it’s so surprising to me that my baby boy will be here in 4-5 weeks and we have NO names for him! My husband and I threw out our lists today bc we didn’t love each others favorites and we were getting nowhere. I don’t know if I’ll find anything I like better than the ones I had on my list!!! Please share some names along the same vein as our favorites…I will be so appreciative of any help! Let e know if u need more info from me.

My favorites:
[name]Felix[/name] (my #1)
[name]Enzo[/name] (or [name]Lorenzo[/name])
[name]Theodore[/name] (teddy, nn)

Hubby:
[name]Declan[/name] (he adores it)
[name]Gavin[/name] (I like it…but may be too common)
[name]Grant[/name] (too short)

More info:
Our last name has 4 syllables
Our daughters name is [name]Finley[/name] [name]Kate[/name] [name]Helena[/name]
Past contenders (for style reference): [name]Henry[/name], [name]Asher[/name], [name]Oscar[/name], [name]Tobin[/name], [name]Luca[/name]

I tend to like quirky, charming names that stand the test of time. PLEASE HELP nameberries!!!

Hmm… I really like [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Gavin[/name] from your lists.

Other suggestions:

[name]Leo[/name]
[name]Quincy[/name]
[name]Walter[/name]
[name]Frederick[/name]
[name]Broderick[/name]
[name]Sylvester[/name]
[name]Landon[/name]
[name]Jonas[/name]
[name]August/name

What about [name]Graham[/name]? Or [name]Graeme[/name]? It is similar to [name]Gavin[/name], but more unusual.

I love [name]Felix[/name] too. Remind your husband that guy who jumped out of space down to earth was named that. Maybe it’ll make it more athletic and cool in his eyes.

With a daughter named [name]Finley[/name] a son’s name needs to be strongly masculine in order to gender-differentiate.

I don’t think [name]Enzo[/name], charming as it is, meets your criteria. It’s a nickname in [name]Italy[/name] along the lines of [name]Johnny[/name] or [name]Tad[/name]. [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Finley[/name] are a little too close, and [name]Theodore[/name] is unobjectionable but a little staid next to sprightly [name]Finley[/name].

From your husband’s list, [name]Declan[/name] really works. It’s masculine and quirky, Celtic to match your daughter, and uncommon. [name]Gavin[/name] is a little passe and [name]Grant[/name] is very strong and charming, but if you think it’s too short, it’s too short. Personally I think [name]Grant[/name] + 3-syllable surname would sound nice.

[name]Duncan[/name]
[name]Anselm[/name]
[name]Louis[/name]
[name]Miles[/name]
[name]Ronan[/name]
[name]Desmond[/name]
[name]Laurence[/name]
[name]Sergio[/name]
Azzo
[name]Wallace[/name]
[name]Quentin[/name]
[name]Carlo[/name]
[name]Mitchell[/name]
[name]Nolan[/name]
[name]Pierce[/name]
[name]Ross[/name]
[name]Byron[/name]

I like [name]Theodore[/name] but deteste the nickname [name]Teddy[/name], and I really like [name]Gavin[/name] - I don’t know about [name]America[/name] but in [name]England[/name] it’s not popular at all, I’ve only ever met one [name]Gavin[/name] and that’s my cousin! From your past contenders I love [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Asher[/name], and I like [name]Tobin[/name] (prefer [name]Tobias[/name]). What about: [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Isaac[/name], [name]Lukas[/name], [name]Selby[/name], [name]Sidney[/name], [name]Samson[/name], [name]Bennett[/name], [name]Olivier[/name], [name]Tristian[/name], [name]Raul[/name], [name]Mackenzie[/name], [name]Griffin[/name]?

Well, obviously I love the name [name]Felix[/name]! Some possibilities… [name]Everett[/name], [name]Dexter[/name], [name]Edwin[/name], [name]Quinton[/name], [name]Archer[/name], [name]Asher[/name]

I really like both [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Declan[/name]. Some suggestions - [name]Jax[/name], [name]Bennett[/name], [name]Max[/name], [name]Isaac[/name], [name]Lucas[/name], [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Thatcher[/name], [name]Beckett[/name] and [name]Noah[/name].

Out of your list I like:
[name]Declan[/name]
[name]Gavin[/name]
[name]Felix[/name]

You may like…
[name]Vincent[/name]
[name]Mateo[/name]
[name]Atticus[/name]
[name]Axel[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name]
[name]Hunter[/name]
[name]Maxwell[/name]

Thanks for the ideas! Hubby says nothing stands out to him…but he needs to be a little more open, I think. I really want to love [name]Declan[/name]…I know it would work great with finley but I just don’t love it! I hope you’ll send a few more ideas (since we won’t be using any of me or hubby’s faves) and we need a new list!

What do you all think of [name]Milo[/name]? [name]Will[/name] it grow with a boy as it sounds very youthful.

I love [name]Milo[/name] or [name]Miles[/name]. I like your husband am a fan of Celtic boys names… [name]Oscar[/name] seems to marry your styles perfectly in that its Celtic and Vintage! [name]How[/name] about [name]Otto[/name]? [name]Phoenix[/name]? [name]Evan[/name] nn [name]Van[/name], [name]Atlas[/name], [name]Tristan[/name], [name]Roscoe[/name]? I Like suggestions of [name]Archer[/name] nn [name]Archie[/name] or [name]Quincy[/name]!

I love [name]Oscar[/name]…it was vetoed! Also like archer ([name]Archie[/name]) and [name]Otto[/name]…vetoed as well. I’m now looking into [name]Soren[/name] and [name]Leo[/name] (perhaps [name]Leopold[/name]). Like [name]Gavin[/name], will [name]Leo[/name] be too common in the near future? Wdyt?

I appreciate your suggestions. Initially I also assumed we need a strong masculine name to distinguish the gender since finley is a gender-bender. However, I’ve heard conflicting advice, including from the authors of this site. Also, I wonder if there’s any logic to making sure it’s masculine…why would one be somewhat masculine/a little more feminine and the sibling be obviously masculine? I don’t know if I’m making sense here, but I’m saying I’ve gotten over that idea already.
As for [name]Enzo[/name]…there are many nn based on traditional names being used, particularly in [name]England[/name]. [name]Enzo[/name] is used and listed on its own these days but I do like [name]Lorenzo[/name]. Perhaps [name]Lorenzo[/name] doesn’t fit well with finley…I think [name]Enzo[/name] does.

There is a phenomenon in psychology called confirmation bias. Basically, humans like to fill in patterns, as we all rely on making predictions in order to live and act in the world. Applying this to names-- when you are exposed to a particular name, your ‘predictions’ for subsequent names are strongly colored by the first one, unconsciously.

I meet an adorable little girl named [name]Finley[/name], and she talks about her sibling [name]Rowan[/name]. I will unconsciously assume [name]Rowan[/name] is also a girl given that I have a data point right in front of me. The inverse is true-- I meet a little boy named [name]Rowan[/name], who speaks of sibling [name]Finley[/name]. I will assume [name]Finley[/name] is a boy. However, I can’t make predictions with the same degree of accuracy if I meet a little boy named [name]Maximus[/name] who speaks of sibling [name]Finley[/name], as they are sufficiently different to leave a degree of doubt and guesswork. Likewise if you had a son named [name]Finley[/name] and I met a sister called [name]Liliana[/name], I wouldn’t be able to make assumptions about [name]Rowan[/name]'s gender. In fact, I would be more prone to assume they’re opposite-gender siblings since [name]Finley[/name] is so obviously discordant with either [name]Liliana[/name] or [name]Maximus[/name].

To be sure, to be sure. But in your first post you stated you wanted “quirky, charming names that will stand the test of time.” I don’t think [name]Alfie[/name], [name]Harry[/name] or [name]Enzo[/name] necessarily fit those criteria. Your other suggested names are not very much like [name]Enzo[/name]. But if you love it, and you’re defending it, that’s a good sign that it might be the one.

I think since your daughter has a somewhat unisex first name your son needs a really masculine name. I like [name]Grant[/name] a lot and since you have a four syllable surname I’m wondering why you think it’s too short?

I see that you’re not able to love [name]Declan[/name]. I agree [name]Gavin[/name] is too popular, and next to [name]Finley[/name] it’s a little dull. [name]Lorenzo[/name] nn [name]Enzo[/name] is tired to me. I like [name]Theodore[/name], and I love [name]Teddy[/name]!

Here are some more suggestions. Please forgive any repeats:

[name]Heath[/name]
[name]Caius[/name]
[name]Leo[/name]
[name]Jude[/name]
[name]Beckett[/name]
[name]Isaac[/name]
[name]Wyatt[/name]
[name]Linus[/name]
[name]Simon[/name]
[name]Nolan[/name]
[name]Griffin[/name]
[name]Killian[/name]
[name]Bram[/name]
[name]Seth[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name]
[name]Emmett[/name]
[name]Charles[/name]
[name]Rafferty[/name]

I’m not a fan of [name]Milo[/name]. It’s ok for a little boy or a pet but it doesn’t work on a grown man. I can’t imagine a President [name]Milo[/name]. [name]Miles[/name] is much better.

[name]Blade[/name]–
Thank you for the great info! Makes sense. I love learning something new! My first instinct was to go masculine.

I really like [name]Declan[/name] and [name]Felix[/name]!

To me,

[name]Calvin[/name]

is a likely alternative to [name]Gavin[/name] and [name]Declan[/name].

I like [name]Declan[/name] best!
I also think that [name]Callum[/name] or [name]Cormac[/name] nn [name]Mack[/name].
[name]Love[/name] them with [name]Finley[/name]!
