Name nerds: Does your naming style reflect your fashion sense?

The names and combos I gravitate toward tend to be sort of dark, ethereal and usually nature-based. I realised this happens to be the same kind of fashion I like.

So, does anyone else’s fashion sense or personal aesthetics mesh with the names they like? I’d love to hear about it.

Hmm…I never thought of this before. I guess my answer is maybe. The names/combos that I like are classic with a bit of flair or something to slightly spice things up, or maybe can be described as somewhat uncommon/older. Style-wise (fashion), that’s pretty spot on. I dress in a simple, casual, laid-back style and sometimes have just a little something unexpected on. For instance, I can usually be found in jeans, a plaid shirt or a T-shirt, and barefoot…yet I have violet highlights on my bottom layer of hair…and sometimes I will toss on a quirky necklace or some other simple accessory.

Funny coincidence, I suppose lol.

Oh heck yeah!

My favorite designers (not that I can ever afford to wear them ;)) are Dolce & Gabbana, [name_m]Valentino[/name_m], [name_f]Gucci[/name_f] (their most recent collections), and [name_f]Ulyana[/name_f] Sergeenko.
These designers love to weave in eclectic components of their cultural costumes and nods to their heritage into the fashions they create. I love the rich colors, heavy fabrics, and zest for love and life.

I like my names to reflect sort of a richness and passion tinged with unmistakable culture and eclecticism. I’m always looking for the “unexpected yet plausible”.

To illustrate what I’m talking about, here are some photos:

Dolce & Gabbana:

[name_f]Ulyana[/name_f] Sergeenko (truly underrated!)

That’s fair enough; thanks for the insight. You’re making me miss my teal hair! :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank you so much for the detailed response, very insightful. I looked at all the pictures and it’s fascinating to see it translated into your signature! [name_u]Love[/name_u] the [name_m]Valentino[/name_m] stuff!

I think my favoured clothing style would be described as strega fashion or dark mori girl. I like things that are dark but still very airy and whimsical.

Hmm. Maybe? I’m a fan of jeans/capris and baseball tees. Though I do have a large shoe collection. . .
I feel like a childless soccer mom now that I’m really looking at my wardrobe. :’)
Guess I go for comfort and movability above all else, haha!

I think it does to an extent.

I’m a super feminine person - a girly-girl, I guess? I love anything sparkly, glittery, etc. I think Ava, Brielle, Arianna, Alivia, Brynlee, Savannah, Brooklyn, Delaney, Gracelyn, Aliannah, Aubree, Lainey, Kailyn, Madelynn, Kaylee/Kaylie/Caylee, Addilyn/Adalynn, Serenity, Nevaeh, Destiny, Trinity and Everleigh fit this too - either because of kids I know with these names, or how I picture a little girl with these names.

I’m also really into the 1990s trend, and, I guess that’s shown with Chandler (the only boys name on my list that really reflects my style at all), Mackenzie, Destiny, Cheyenne, Desiree, Alyssa, Kayla, Lauren, Morgan, Brooke, Sydney, Hannah, and Allison are all names that seemed to peak in the late 90s/early 00s, compared to now.

I guess the rest of my girls’ names - Parker, Sawyer, Delaney, Addison, Skylar, Kennedy, Peyton, Hadley, Rylee, Jayla, Aspen, Bristol, Saylor, Ireland, Jayden - they kind of reflect the fact that I never really follow one style or pattern - I mostly wear what I feel comfortable in, what makes me happy.

Although, overall, I think my list reflects that too.

Here are some examples of what I like style wise:

I think they kind of do. Generally I’d describe my name style as quite unusual and different (or at least I try to be), with some vintage and classics thrown in. My fashion style is quite casual, I pretty much live in jeans, t-shirts, hoodies, and my Docs (aka my shoe babies). But let’s say I really wish Hot Topic had shops here, so that’s probably the alternative/ unusual-ish side. I really like fandom/band merch, leather jackets, and the few dresses I have are more vintage, so that does line up.

Just wanted to add my sort of clothes style now I’ve discovered polyvore lol: Luxury fashion & independent designers | SSENSE

This is an interesting question -never thought about it before. My naming taste is a mix of unusual, classic, international/cross-cultural, astronomical, mythological, floral… quite varied. Meanwhile, I am a moderately girly girl with a versatile taste in fashion. I am equally comfortable in both male clothes (got some hands me down stuffs as I grew up, though these days the only boyish thing I often wear is over sized t-shirt) and dresses, skirts, laces, etc. Generally the girls names on my list are distinctively feminine and boys ones are masculine. I hate most gender bender names and kreative spellings. However, a few of my favourites have uhm… gender bending possibilities? [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] is very delicate and feminine, but if my daughter turns out to be tomboyish I like that she can always go by Raph or [name_u]Finn[/name_u].

I hadn’t thought about it before, but I suppose my names do kind of reflect my fashion style. Or at least the fashion style I prefer to have. haha Most of my names are pretty classic, with a couple more modern ones thrown in as middle names and that is pretty close to how I dress. I like simple, classic lines and don’t tend to wear a lot of stuff that’s frilly, overly ornamented, etc, but I do like a statement necklace, bright color, or fun pattern now and again.

Yes, I’m very feminine. However, as I get older it’s less of a glittery type of girly-ness. More streamlined. I love ruffles on clothes (in moderation) & dresses/skirts in the summer. However, I don’t dress the same everyday. Somedays I like to dress a little more relaxed like a t-shirt, jeans, & tennis shoes. Some days a little whimsy. However, I always throw a girly price on like a necklace or bomber jacket with flowers on it. I don’t mind standing out & just wear what I like but I also don’t like showing too much skin & that’s where I’m a bit conservative.

I know if I had more money atm my style would be a lot different too & more glamorous.

I view my naming style as romantic, international, a little traditional (more on the boy side), with a touch of whimsical/nature.

Yes and no
I prefer pastel, soft colors and I do love sweet and “soft” names so yes
But I usually like to dress as masculine as possible,my names are nothing like that so no

That’s a wonderful question! I think my style and how it alternates between different things sort of mimics my fashion sense since my tastes change based on my mood. If I had the money, and body, I’d really enjoy dressing up for my personality. When it comes to what I would realistically use for names, like honors, I think it touches on my love of classic clothing that looks timeless. Additionally, I think the classic style also ties into the fact that I prefer first names that are sex specific. My fashion taste includes a mixture of frills and roughness (e.g., frilly dress and a leather jacket) or dark/neutral clothes with a pop of color. For my names, especially girls, I do like name combos where I feel a different vibe from each name; this may be unisex, names with few syllables, or rougher sounding (emphasis on consonants) in the middle with a more frilly first.

What she said.
I dig androgyne clothing, but I’m not really into unisex names. On the other hand, if you describe my clothing as simple or functional, the analogy to my naming style could work.
Or you could just say that I don’t have a style at all, clothing or name-wise.

Coming to think of it, yes, absolutely. I mostly dress in darker colors, reds, burgundies, teal, dark green and jewel colors in general, so those are the colors I think that my favorite names have. I like vintage, a bit of silk, moderate ruffles, some lace and vintage accessories. I’m not much of a make-up person, but I don’t like going out without lipstick and sunscreen.

No for me. I like darker, gothic names, and i cant describe the way i dress like that. I like to follow trends, and i dont think i do that with names.

What I like and what I wear are two separate things. I like more frilly stuff and put-together, coordinated outfits, but you’ll usually catch me running around in a t-shirt, either leggings, jeans, or sweatpants, a hoodie, and flip-flops/sandals or tennis shoes. I’m functional and simple with my clothes because I don’t have the money, energy, or time to be fancy. My taste has a lot of florals and flowing silhouettes, tbh. My names are a little more whimsical, with touches of nature, vintage-ness, literature, and [name_m]French[/name_m] culture.

You know, I’ve never thought of that but I suppose they might. I love to wear dresses and skirts, and pretty clothes that are girly but not too over the top… I suppose that is like my naming style!

I may be reaching here but I find I dress in 3 distinct styles, and I can kind of categorize my favorite names into corresponding ones.

  1. Classic and collegiate. (Button downs and collared shirts under sweaters, cardigans, Oxfords.) Names: [name_m]Beckett[/name_m], [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m], [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m], [name_m]Montgomery[/name_m], [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], [name_m]Louis[/name_m], [name_f]Louise[/name_f], [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Theodosia[/name_f], [name_f]Margo[/name_f], [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f].
  2. Bohemian/hippie. (Flowy skirts/dresses/pants, lots of colors and patterns, wide brim hats, scarves, etc.) Names: [name_m]Fox[/name_m], [name_m]Wolf[/name_m], [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], Wilde, [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_m]Olimpio[/name_m], [name_u]Indigo[/name_u], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f], [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f].
  3. Grungy/edgey and more masculine. (Flannels, leather jackets, ripped jeans, band-tees, [name_m]Doc[/name_m] Martens.) Names: [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m], [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], Wilde, [name_u]Lee[/name_u], [name_m]Ivan[/name_m], [name_u]Guthrie[/name_u], [name_f]Noa[/name_f], [name_f]Harlow[/name_f], [name_f]Thomasin[/name_f], [name_u]Adair[/name_u], “[name_u]Theo[/name_u]”,"[name_u]Cal[/name_u]", “[name_f]Andie[/name_f]”.

This may be nonsense to other people, but it makes sense to me! haha

I agree with @summerskin/[name_u]Simone[/name_u]. What I wear to school is completely different than what my style is. To school, I usually dress as comfy as possible because I don’t feel like being dressed up at 6:30 in the morning. I wear leggings almost everyday, a loose shirt, and my converse. I also wear my dance team cardigan at least twice a week lol.
My style is still very simple and comfortable. When I’m thinking about what I wear, I usually wear a fun shirt with a plain jacket/cardigan or vice verse and jeans or leggings. I don’t usually dress very girly because I hate dresses and skirts. I love rompers but they’re usually too short. I also love jumpsuits but I’m not brave enough to actually wear one. I love fun shoes. I have a pair of Vans with the 101 Dalmatians on it, and I have sparkly, rainbow sandals. I usually don’t wear any jewelry besides the earrings I wear in my second holes all the time (mostly because when I take them out for too long, they close up) and my class ring. Occasionally I wear a necklace but I don’t like bracelets.
So, I guess my names somewhat reflect that. I don’t exactly know what my name style is, so someone else can tell me if they disagree, but I do add some fun or unexpected elements to my outfits (such as shoes) and I like to use unexpected middle names. I’m also not really a fan of the frilly girl names, and I don’t like girly outfits. My boys are pretty laid back, like my everyday look. So, I guess it does.

My theoretical fashion? Yes.
The actual clothes I can afford and that look good on me? Not so much.
You can check my polyvore if you want (same name as here) to see my fantasy wardrobe if you want, but basically want I want to wear is very feminine most of the time, just like my girl names are. It’s a bit old fashioned from time to time too. But.I also love leather jackets, short shorts and [name_m]Doc[/name_m] Martens, which I guess is a bit more “cool”, like some of my names ([name_f]Zelda[/name_f] for example, or [name_m]Leander[/name_m]). What I actually wear isn’t like that at all… I basically wear jeans and a plaid shirt every day.

Tl;dr: It does, but only in my fantasy.
