Name nerds: Does your naming style reflect your fashion sense?

Brilliant question! For me, it absolutely does. I gravitate towards very historical and traditional names, on both extremes of the popularity spectrum, and I put value on their having story and meaning. I have an old-style aesthetic in clothes as well, going for long skirts, floral blouses, and cardigans. I don’t really like the styles which are sold for my teenaged peers, so I often make my own clothes or buy vintage things when I can find them reasonably priced.

I also love noticing how an era’s naming trends correlate to their fashion in dress. For example, the 1920s introduced very boyish styles in women’s clothes, and the newly fashionable names were the streamlined [name_u]Joan[/name_u], [name_u]Jean[/name_u], [name_u]Joyce[/name_u] and [name_f]Doris[/name_f] - a big departure from the flowery names of the Edwardian period.

It doesn’t for me much at all. I usually dress pretty androgynously, just t-shirts and jeans most days, and I’m not a huge fan of dressing up. I guess you could call my style more tomboyish, and occasionally grungy. However, for names, I tend to like more elegant, classic names, like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], etc. I do have some names that are more “out there” that I like, like [name_u]Winter[/name_u], [name_f]Vanna[/name_f], and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], but my “out there” names aren’t very out there xD

I’d describe both my fashion sense and naming style as weird, old (sometimes in a cool vintage way and sometimes just outdated), mismatched, part basic and part over the top, and most of all considered ugly by the general population

To some extent. I have a very classic, casual style- I’m a jeans, converse and t-shirt kind of girl. It’s very comfortable and functional and lets me do whatever I want to do, without worrying about something getting ruined or looking bad later on. I think this carefree, casual style can be seen in my love for nicknames, if that makes sense? They’re sweet, simple and snappy (yelling “[name_f]ELLIE[/name_f]!” down the street is far easier than yelling “[name_f]ELEANOR[/name_f]!”). Also, classic style and (generally) classic names.

Theoretically, I adore retro/vintage fashion from the last century, and if it aligned more with my everyday life I’d definitely bring some of those trends into my wardrobe (big skirts, capri pants, bardot tops, low waist dresses, etc). My siganture doesn’t really show it, I think, but I’m a big fan of vintage names.

I also really love a very femenine style, with skirts, dresses, bright colours and floral patterns. I generally like very girly, sometimes even frilly names. I’m a big fan of “biker ballerina” style too (i.e mixing very girly pieces with more edgy one) and I think a bit of juxtaposition sips into my combos, since most of them have a very classic name paired with a more out-there one (but in general, I think that’s something most berries do, so I may be grasping at straws here!)

Not necessarily with the style/clothes I wear but rather with the style I like to look at and find beautiful.

Generally my personal style is very simple, almost always black or darker muted colours, backpacks instead of bag, no heels 99% of the time. It’s what works for me and my life, what I feel comfortable in.

I do think that, in a way, my favourite names do refelct that feeling of simplicity and comfortability.
They’re to-the-point, no fuss, timeless, easy-to-wear names. No weird spellings, no strange pronunciations.

I think the elegance they convey is more found in what I find aesthetically pleasing, I like the full Victorian gowns, the simple Edwardian dresses but also the sleeker elegance of the 1920s. Throw in basically everything [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] Hepburn wore and that’s the style that doesn’t personally suit me but that I like to look at.

I think my favourite names would also refelct the style in which I would dress my children in better than my own. I’m not a huge fan of all those mini-adult clothes out there but I also don’t like the loud, Disney character shirts paired with bright coloured leggings.
I’d go for something vintage but not dated - so timeless, and simple but still beautiful and elegant - which is exactly how I would decribe my favourite names.

Classic, vintage and sometimes dated - ha, ha - yeah, guess it’s about right…! :grinning:

Yeah, definitely. I’m casual, not over the top, I don’t conform to what everyone else is wearing (minus a few clothing items, which I just so happen to like) and my naming style is like that. I don’t go with the flow is one way to put it. I either wear rolled up, ripped jeans with my Adidas and any jumper I fancy (usually olive or burgundy coloured), or jeans, black boots and another jumper. Rarely seen in t-shirts. I love the boyfriend jeans, high-waisted with a belt, [name_m]Doc[/name_m] Martens, a plaid cardigan and a black strappy tee during warmer months, but we rarely get proper warmth here lol.

Well, it depends.

I work in a strict business environment and I dress up in chic, sometimes sophisticated, clothes, which I adore. However, I am not a fan of preppy or nerdy items. During my free time, I prefer casual clothing and sometimes athletic. There is always elegance in the pieces I decide to wear, though. Nothing too frilly, too tomboy-ish, bohemian etc. They look perfect on certain people but not on myself.

I adore (but, of course, don’t wear) 20’s and 50’s fashion, [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] Hepburn’s style etc. Elegance is above all. I strongly dislike floral and multi-colored items and sometimes clothes that seem trendy. I literally hate som e trends.

With names…well, it’s more complicated. I looked for something absolutely feminine (I have a daughter so I am only into girls names, for boys it would be different) and elegant but that could work in modern society. I have always wanted a name to sound strong but approachable, cute but professional. An example is [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]. I can imagine her following any path in her life.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] like in clothes, I love but can’t use names that sound too old-fashioned. This rules out Agnetha, for instance. The same happens with unisex names, like [name_u]Spencer[/name_u]. With trendy names, as well as with trendy clothes, I can’t tell for sure. I like some of them and I dislike others.

Some things aren’t alike. I don’t like frilly clothes but I adore long, romantic, frilly names. And I like casual clothes but I don’t like names to be “plain” and “simple”.

In a sense, yes. My fashion sense is a random mix of whatever appeals and so are my names!

Hmm. The names I like usually are nature-themed or pretty without being over-the-top. I like girl names that end in -enne or -yssa. My names are usually not exactly trendy, but would fit in among the trends. I also tend towards names that sound more like character names than real people (probably because at this age all I’m thinking about is naming characters!).
This actually reflects my fashion sense a lot. I wear a lot of bright or pastel colors, flowy tops, t-shirts with cute graphics, and leggings/jeans. I’m interested in the trends, but don’t wear much that would be considered trendy. [name_m]Even[/name_m] my aversion to sporty or tomboy-ish style could be considered parallel to my lack of inspiration when it comes to boy names.

Wow.

At first I was like ‘hmm maybe’ and then I actually thought about it, and yes. It absolutely does.
Classic with a slight flair - I like recognisable but still individual. And I’m pretty sure that applies to my names and my clothes.
It also applies to my S/O - no clothes that really draw attention, standard, plain - his one name like is [name_m]John[/name_m].

Oh my goodness. I just had another thought.

I already replied to this thread, but I just had to share this new idea about how my naming style reflects my fashion sense (or vice versa). I often choose names that I would love calling a character, but I wouldn’t give to an actual baby. I’m a writer, and besides, I’m too young to be thinking about those things! But my fashion sense is actually similar. As much as I try to follow the teenage trends, I’m naturally drawn to bright colors, lace, pastels, flowy clothing, and graphics of unicorns. More than half of my clothing comes from stores like [name_u]Justice[/name_u] and Children’s Place. [name_m]Just[/name_m] like my naming style, my fashion sense is unwilling to grow up. ;D

I think that it does! Not so much in the sense that one would think initially, though. I tend to stick to the basics: sweaters and khaki pants, jeans and t-shirts. Vintage-inspired dresses, skirts, and blouses if I am splurging. My naming style is quite wearable, I’d say, and versatile, with a dash of something extra.

I guess kind of? My fashion sense is generally very basic, neutral colours and skinny jeans/leggings, lots of black/white/grey. The names I like are often more old-fashioned than my fashion sense is, and have more pizzazz! Although, I’d say my fashion sense IS like my name style, in that I have loads of clothes but always end up wearing the same few pieces - my ‘favourites’ lists are technically 50+ names long, but my true favourites rarely change!
