[name]Hi[/name] Berries! So today, all of the sudden, the name [name]Feivel[/name] popped into my head and now I am obsessed! I love it! But, is it too tied to the mouse? And would you spell it [name]Feivel[/name] or Fievel? Can I use it if I’m not Jewish? And lastly…is it too close to [name]Felix[/name]?? [name]Felix[/name] & [name]Feivel[/name]? Hmmm…
I think I am addicted to names… It really can’t be healthy to think about them 24/7!
It definitely makes me think about the mouse from An American Tail! Maybe it won’t so much for the next generation though. [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Felix[/name]! What a great choice!
I automatically think of the mouse, and then the song “Somewhere Out There”. It’s a great children’s cartoon, so even though it’s from our generation, I think it would still be exposed to the new generation who will eventually see the movies as well. I think that while it’s a bit close to [name]Felix[/name], it’s not TOO close. The starting F sound is the only thing they have in common, the rest of the names are totally different. I don’t think the cartoon itself is enough of a reason to NOT use the name. I think if you love it, it’s good to use. I’m not Jewish but I like Hebrew names, I’m not French and yet I love French names. It’s about what you love!
Only problem is [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Feivel[/name] is a bit cat-and-mouse.
I’m Jewish and I admit I tend to think of [name]Feivel[/name] as a bit nickname sounding (-el as a suffix in Yiddish is used the way -y is in English for many nicknames… [name]Jim[/name] becomes [name]Jimmy[/name] in English, [name]Yacov[/name] becomes [name]Yankel[/name] in Yiddish…) but I don’t see any reason you couldn’t use it.
As far as Jewish names that mean “brilliant” or sun though I prefer [name]Cyrus[/name] and [name]Samson[/name]… but if you’re looking for obscure-but-real [name]Feivel[/name] can’t really be beat.
stripedsocks- I was hoping no one would notice the whole “cat-and-mouse” thing! Very interesting about the nickname thing, I did not know that the -el ending was equivalent to our -y in Yiddish. Thanks for the insight
I think it is going on the list, but I still have my doubts. It is maybe a little young. [name]How[/name] would [name]Feivel[/name] look on an adult?
I would love to hear some names that you are all currently obsessing over! And any alternatives to [name]Feivel[/name]
Oh, and gigigibbons… I see you are officially TTC!! Congrats and good luck!!
[name]Feivel[/name] was my best friend’s son’s Hebrew name (well, [name]Feivel[/name] [name]Shlomo[/name]). I can’t think of [name]Feivel[/name] without wanting to cry, though, since my friend’s little son, [name]Jonas[/name], was born extremely prematurely and passed away a little over a month after he came into this world. But I have bittersweet associations to it, since he was such a fighter and such a perfect, brave little boy. He had so much going against him, but he had the soul of an angel.
I couldn’t ever use it–mainly because the emotional connections are way too strong for me (and my friend… and her family), but I think it’s a great choice for someone else. [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Feivel[/name] seem a bit mismatched, but [name]Feivel[/name] is so cute. It seems a bit GPish for me, too. Maybe something like [name]Sebastian[/name] [name]Feivel[/name]? And you could still call him [name]Feivel[/name] at home–it could be your special name for him.
