Name questions

I have two more name questions

  1. [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] is often regarded as a “stripper name”. Would you agree with that statement?
  2. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_f]Ebony[/name_f] as a name only works for children of colour?

If I met a woman named [name_f]Destiny[/name_f], I wouldn’t automatically think she’s a stripper. On the other hand, the name on its own does seem to go along with that vibe. Which is unfortunate because it has such a lovely meaning.

Same kind of thing for the name [name_f]Ebony[/name_f]. I don’t believe I’ve ever known of a white person named [name_f]Ebony[/name_f], but that doesn’t mean it’ll never happen. I think it would a little odd for a name that has been used mainly by people of color to be used by, for example, a blonde child. Unlike a color name such as [name_f]Violet[/name_f], names like [name_f]Ebony[/name_f] and [name_u]Raven[/name_u] make me think that kid should have black hair, if not also brown skin.

[name_f]Destiny[/name_f] is a sweet-sounding name, but I know many people would make the stripper association. It’s unfortunate, but probably best to avoid [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] as a first name. It’s fine for a middle.

As for [name_f]Ebony[/name_f], I’ve never met a POC called [name_f]Ebony[/name_f], but have met a few white children. I think it works perfectly fine, though would assume that the child has black, or at least very dark brown hair. Though I have seen a ginger [name_f]Ebony[/name_f], so I don’t think it matters.

  1. Not necessarily. It’s an ok name, not exactly my style but I am neutral.
  2. Nope. Fine on anyone.
  1. I don’t think so but where I live strip clubs aren’t a common occurrence. It definitely strikes me as being a working class name though.

  2. I don’t think so. The only [name_f]Ebony[/name_f] I know is white. I don’t really see why the meaning should have to refer to skin colour. I mean, would someone called [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] have to be white because jasmine blossoms are white?

I’ve always thought [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] had a trashy vibe. Sorry. That said it’s become common enough I don’t think this generation of children will view it the same. (Side note, I was speaking with the mom of a [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] yesterday and for the first time I actually liked the name as it was tied to her birth story.)
I love [name_f]Ebony[/name_f]. When I was a kid my mom told me I’d never be able to use it because I was too white. I was so mad!! But as I got older I realized I didn’t want to give my daughter a name knowing full well her appearance didn’t match the definition of the name or people’s expectations. I don’t know if I’m opposed to [name_f]Ebony[/name_f] being used on white children in general, but not something I wanted to be my freckled child’s identity.

1. [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] is often regarded as a “stripper name”. Would you agree with that statement?
No, My mind doesn’t go straight to a stripper.
I’t actually makes me think of the virtue name group and the whale from Finding [name_u]Dory[/name_u]

2. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_f]Ebony[/name_f] as a name only works for children of colour?
Sometimes I think yes as the colour imagery is dark but then again I have met a few named [name_f]Ebony[/name_f] that are Caucasian. I don’t think it really matters too much.

  1. Yes and no. Yes my first reaction is 90s stripper along with [name_f]Misty[/name_f]. On the other hand when I think of stripper 2019 I think [name_f]Roxie[/name_f] and [name_f]Trixie[/name_f], so I think [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] is more usable this generation.

  2. No. I’ve actually only met Caucasian [name_f]Ebony[/name_f]'s. I think colour names like ivory ginger etc can be used on any race.

  1. I don’t see [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] as a stripper name, however, I think it is kind of trashy (sorry).
  2. I would expect [name_f]Ebony[/name_f] to be black.

1- oh I hate to say a name is a “stripper” name because its not to say it’s a bad thing but also awkward to think of a child with a stripper name… but it does have that vibe. I mostly think of Destinys child.
2- I wouldn’t use [name_f]Ebony[/name_f] as a white person but I don’t think it’s a solid rule. For me it’s connected with the [name_u]Stevie[/name_u] Wonder song

I think [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] is more for a woman of colour than [name_f]Ebony[/name_f]. However I’d probably say yes to question 2 too
