[name_m]Just[/name_m] curious to see if there were any names that people regret giving their kids or even not giving them.
I renamed my puppy [name_u]Piper[/name_u] (she was named [name_f]Molly[/name_f] when I got her) and refer to her as [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]Molly[/name_f] all the time and every time I think about it I love the name so much I almost regret not saving it for my future babies. However, she since she is my baby I can’t really be that upset with it. Does anyone else have a similar story, or even the reverse?
I suppose I have a similar story… We weren’t planning on having children, but we got a dog and named him [name_m]Linus[/name_m]. A few months later we found out I was pregnant, and since we both adore the name [name_m]Linus[/name_m], it’s a bit of a shame we couldn’t use it for our son.
I’ve used some of my fave boy names on my guinea pigs ([name_u]Toby[/name_u], [name_m]Winston[/name_m], [name_u]Kai[/name_u]) and while I couldn’t imagine them having different names, I do sometimes regret they’re now unusable
I recently got a puppy and my mum pushed for the name [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] (mostly due to his resemblance to a teddy bear). I conceded as [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] did, admittedly, fit him perfectly. However, at the time, it was my favourite boys’ name (nickname for [name_m]Edmund[/name_m]), and it saddened me for a while that I would be unable to use [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]. I still regret it sometimes, as I have moments when I wonder about having a little [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] myself, but I do love my pup so I can’t really complain much :).
Yes!
We’re currently trying to choose names for our girl due in [name_f]October[/name_f]. We’ve considered renaming one of our chickens so we can take her name for the baby.
Her names [name_f]Martha[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] don’t think I could steal her name, she’s such a sweetie haha
One of my cats is [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] - I love both those names and I’m kinda sad that I can’t use them for a future child, but the name fits her perfectly.
I have a similar issue. We adopted a kitten when I was 9 months pregnant and named her [name_u]Billie[/name_u]. The name seriously suits her and I felt so much confidence when I named her. My husband and I had already settled on the name [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] for our daughter who came 1 week after we adopted [name_u]Billie[/name_u].
I’m not sad that I used up a name I really liked on our cat, but I had and still have so much indecision circling our daughters name. I think I am just now starting to think maybe [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] suits our daughter, or maybe it will suit her more as she grows and she is 7 weeks old. I really just wish I had the confidence and the instant “click” I had when naming [name_u]Billie[/name_u].
Maybe that’s just what I get for naming a pet days before naming a human!
Yes, the family dog’s name of 11 years who is a part in everyone in this family’s hearts, is named [name_m]Felix[/name_m] which is my favorite boy name ever, so I feel it would be wrong to call my son for [name_m]Felix[/name_m]
This is a huge pet peeve of mine! Pets can have ANY name - they can get away with basically anything and it doesn’t affect their lives in the slightest. Wilberforce? [name_m]Brutus[/name_m]? Spark Pug? No issues at all. There’s no judgment in the pet world. So why give a dog or a cat a perfectly usable human name thereby giving that name a pet association forever? The number of times I’ve heard [name_f]Molly[/name_f] or [name_u]Max[/name_u] or [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] in the dog park - it’s like, get more creative people. If every other dog has one of those names, they become heavily associated with dogs and unusable on people.
For what it’s worth, [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is an adorable name, but it’s true that you may always associate it with your pet and not want to use it on an actual baby for that reason. I learned this lesson the hard way with my childhood pets [name_u]Finn[/name_u] and [name_u]Billie[/name_u].
I didn’t realise how common this was! When I decided on her name (it was a last minute change from what I had been planning on calling her - [name_f]Zara[/name_f]) [name_u]Piper[/name_u] was just a name I liked not loved, so I figured I wouldn’t regret giving it to the dog. But it’s just grown on me so much! It suits her so damn well, I couldn’t see her as a [name_f]Molly[/name_f] or a [name_f]Zara[/name_f].
Then you probably love the name so much because you love your dog so much and because the name fits so well. I’m sure if you even have a daughter, the same thing will happen with whatever name you choose.
oh yes! I named two birds [name_u]Seren[/name_u] and [name_f]Tziporah[/name_f] and now i’m sad i can’t name a daughter either of those. Although they are still on my long list- i can’t quite bear to give then up
Haha yes, this did kind of happen to me! When I got my cat (who represented taking a next step of freedom and stability in my life), I was going to name her something that I could never get away with using on a person. I love mythology and fantasy, so I had a list of names that included [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f], [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f], [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], lots of fanciful names that I would never use on a person.
But then when I got her she was so sweet and pretty and silly, not at all the regal creature I expected. Her green eyes made me think of [name_f]Lily[/name_f] from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], so she ended up being named [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. I’ve always loved that name and in a way I’m kind of sad that now I’ll never use a version of [name_f]Lily[/name_f]/[name_f]Lillian[/name_f] on a person, but it just fits her sweet personality so perfectly that I don’t regret it!
I haven’t encountered this, but my pets have come along either well before I was thinking seriously about having a child or well after my daughter was born. My first pet as an adult was a tabby cat who I named [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], as these are two of my least favorite names (this is back in the '80s, well before either of those names was considered to be anything other than old-fashioned & frumpy) & it was something of a joke. Her everyday name was [name_f]Millie[/name_f], which was cute, but my then-boyfriend objected to [name_f]Millie[/name_f] becoming [name_f]Milli[/name_f] Vanilli, & so she was renamed w/i a month of me getting her. She became [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f], which suited her prima dona-ish personality better, & was never called [name_u]Sam[/name_u]…although my ex-husband used to call her Cementhead because it was very similar to [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] & she’d respond to it, then get very annoyed when she realized we were laughing at her.
This is all anecdotal, but it may help. Originally my mother used [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] for our dog. After a week or so she renamed the dog [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] because [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] didn’t quite fit. Fast forward several years and she realized that [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is what she wanted to name her daughter. My name is [name_f]Katherine[/name_f].
