Like their counterparts in the United States, slavers in the Dominican Republic sometimes bestowed classical names on their charges as a mark of their civilizing mission, so the legacy of slavery — and its entanglement with classics — remains legible in the names of many Dominicans today. “Why are there Dominicans named Temístocles?” Padilla used to wonder as a kid. “Why is [name_m]Manny[/name_m] [name_m]Ramirez[/name_m]’s middle name Aristides?” Trujillo’s own middle name was Leónidas, after the Spartan king who martyred himself with 300 of his soldiers at Thermopylae, and who has become an icon of the far right.
I just remembered that there’s an [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]… and a [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]… and I think there’s a [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] too, not certain there, but it was on the credits… and a [name_u]Kit[/name_u] (g)… on a show my sister watches… when I saw it, I probably screamed inside
On Instagram I came across a woman with a little girl named Tilba, which I find quite intriguing. I think I like it. I’m pretty sure Tilba is an Aboriginal word… I know of a place in my state named Tilba Tilba. She had another named [name_u]Tully[/name_u] which I also like, although I’m not entirely sure if it’s a boy or a girl. Another Insta child I came across was [name_f]Paloma[/name_f], which I love.
A baby girl named [name_m]Benny[/name_m] [name_u]Love[/name_u] on Instagram
(Though now that I look it on nb I don’t like the meaning for a baby girl.)
I found an instagram account with triplets called [name_f]Maya[/name_f]-[name_f]Albertine[/name_f], [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] and [name_f]Etta[/name_f]! They also have an older brother called [name_m]Felix[/name_m]
This reminds me, too, when watching The Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f] a while ago, I learned that one of the actresses who played one of the nuns is an [name_f]Evadne[/name_f]! I’ve never forgotten
I meet a 3 year old [name_m]Jun[/name_m] today, it’s a very common Japanese name but also easy to pronounce in many languages (and I think it’s a name in Korean as well?) and a nice sound so I was happy to hear it.
