Name Stress! 10 weeks to go!

So I am now approximately 10-12 weeks away from giving birth to baby boy!

We have talked and thought about nothing but names from the start! And yet here we are, still wondering what on earth we are going to call this little guy!

We are now at the stage of buying items which are able to be personalised, but of course - we can’t have the personalisation done because he still doesn’t have a name!

I don’t think his name will be decided until we meet him, but I’d love to be able to feel closer to a decision!

We have been ALL around the mulberry bush on the subject - Our main concerns were always that we wanted a name that is NOT UK Top 100 but is not TOO over-the-top unique (I don’t want people to gasp “His name is WHAT?!” when we introduce him!). We also wanted a name that has some personal meaning to us.

But as time goes on and names are thrown around, I’m beginning to wonder if I need to sacrifice some of our wishes - for example, I really like the names [name]Logan[/name] & [name]Noah[/name] but they are Top 100 - should I be sacrificing our wish for an uncommon name if it means giving him a name I really like?! I just don’t know any more…

I will give you the new list of names we have in our minds, some have been with us from the start and others are new additions - thoughts appreciated, and feel free to suggest but please be aware that I am ridiculously fussy and I tend to like very few names so please don’t be offended if I don’t like them

I have listed our Pro points for each name in blue, and our [name]Con[/name] points for each name in red.

The List:

[name]Tyne[/name] - In honour of my partners home town, a name we have liked from the start. When I tell people the name, 98% of the time they mishear me and think I am saying “Time”.
[name]Macaulay[/name] - A name that honours part of my surname, and will give him the nickname [name]Mac[/name] which was always my nickname growing up. The association with [name]Macaulay[/name] Culkin…is it too associated with him?
[name]Georgie[/name] - A name in honour of my favourite uncle, and gives me the GG initials I have always liked the idea of when used with his surname. Is it too old fashioned? [name]George[/name] is SO very popular, but there were only 68 [name]Georgie[/name]'s registered in the UK last year. Also my OH feels its too feminine
[name]Raleigh[/name] - A new addition.Too similar to my own name [name]Hayley[/name]?
[name]Lorne[/name] - A new addition.Too similar to my sisters name, [name]Laura[/name]?
[name]Noah[/name] - A name I have always loved.Popularity - was UK Top 20 last year
[name]Micah[/name] - A new addition. Too unusual in the UK…more of a “What?!” name? Mispronounced as [name]Mika[/name] like the singer?
[name]Logan[/name] - Another name I really love. Popularity - UK Top 20.
[name]Hayden[/name] - Another name I have always liked.Again too similar to my name?
[name]Declan[/name] - Has always been one of my favourite names for a boy.Partner says its a chav name where he is from? I can’t think of the US equivalent for the word “chav”…kind of a rough, common person.
[name]Ronan[/name] - I love Irish names, and I have always liked this one.Too associated with the singer [name]Ronan[/name] Keating who I DESPISE - would hate everyone to think he was named after him!
[name]Kian[/name] - As above. As above with the Westlife band member [name]Kian[/name] [name]Egan[/name] - I mentioned the name [name]Kian[/name] to one person and they automatically assumed it was because I was a Westlife fan!

There you are! Missed my fellow [name]Brit[/name] Mama To Be! It’s getting close isn’t it?

Ok, the names… by the way, where did [name]Ossian[/name] go?

[name]Tyne[/name] - I adore [name]Tyne[/name], but I get your concern. If people hear time it’s not ideal. There were a 3 [name]Tyne[/name]'s born in 2011. I still think it’s about the cutest name ever.
[name]Macaulay[/name] - I don’t know much about [name]Macaulay[/name] Culkin, but you shouldn’t go by me. It’s a nice name.
[name]Georgie[/name] - Maybe a little feminine? It’s cute though, much more adorable than [name]Alfie[/name] and [name]Harry[/name].
[name]Raleigh[/name] - I don’t like this, but I don’t think it’s a problem with [name]Hayley[/name], he won’t know you by your given name anyways.
[name]Lorne[/name] - No I think it’s fine. It can be a cute little connection.
[name]Noah[/name] - This is everywhere, so if popularity’s an issue I wouldn’t use it. It’s a lovely name though.
[name]Micah[/name] - 159 [name]Micah[/name]'s in 2011, I think it will be ok. People might mispronounce, but you’ll correct them and it will be fine.
[name]Logan[/name] - Very pop, I have never met one though. Quite hansome too.
[name]Hayden[/name] - It’s obviously similar, but I don’t think that’s a problem unless you think it is. [name]Hayden[/name] is very nice.
[name]Declan[/name] - Yeah, chav, I agree with your manfriend. And it sounds very rough.
[name]Ronan[/name] - Ugh, [name]Ronan[/name] Keating, why did he have to have such a lovely name? Everytime I see the name [name]Ronan[/name] I hear “rollercoaster” (why oh why?) in my head.
[name]Kian[/name] - I’ve never been very interested in boybands so I had no idea there was a [name]Kian[/name] in Westlife. I think it’s a very handsome name.

I know you’ve probably heard this one before, but I love [name]Ciar[/name]án. I think it would fit in with your style. And mr. Hinds is fantastic, I wouldn’t mind if anyone thought I’d named my kid after him.

[name]Tyne[/name]- I agree it might be mistaken for time.
[name]Macaulay[/name]- I think the [name]Macaulay[/name] Culkin association is a bit dated. I don’t think many people will associate it with him.
[name]Georgie[/name]- Cute for a little boy but… I don’t think it will do good on an adult.
[name]Raleigh[/name]- It sounds a bit like your name, but I think the name is kind of cute. If it bothers you then I wouldn’t use it.
[name]Lorne[/name]- I don’t really like this one. I think it sounds a bit feminine and too close to your sisters name, [name]Laura[/name].
[name]Noah[/name]- If it’s a name you really love, I say use it! [name]Even[/name] if its popular, it’s a great, strong name. It has lots of history and if you’re religious it would make a great name.
[name]Micah[/name]- I have never really cared for this name and if it will get disapproving looks you might run into baby name remorse.
[name]Logan[/name]- This name is a bit too unisex for me. I prefer pure masculinity.
[name]Hayden[/name]- A bit too close to [name]Hayley[/name], [name]IMO[/name].
[name]Declan[/name]- I love this name! It’s a shame you’re hubby doesn’t like it. I hope you can convince him. Maybe a middle?
[name]Ronan[/name]- I don’t know the band you’re talking about so I have no association about it. I know there’s a song called [name]Ronan[/name] about a four year old who passed from cancer.
[name]Kian[/name]- Again, I don’t know the band but I like this name.

[name]Noah[/name] [name]Declan[/name] maybe?

[name]Ottilie[/name] - Hiiiii! I know, I’ve been [name]MIA[/name] for a while now! I was SO down hearted about not being able to stick with a name that I ended up avoiding Nameberry lol, how ridiculous right?!
It is getting SO close! Scarily close! [name]How[/name] have you been feeling?

Aww Ossian - the mother ruined it for us. I knew I should have held out on telling her…We SO loved it. She told us it sounded like “a name you would hear on the news, that belongs to a suicide bomber”…completely unfounded of course, like all her criticisms are, but now that image is in my head the name is destroyed for me!

Yeah I’m so torn on [name]Noah[/name] & [name]Logan[/name] - I [name]LOVE[/name] them both but their ranking puts me off, yet I have never actually met a person with either name. But is that because they’re all babies…so by the time my Bean gets to school age, will his class be over run with them?!

I KNOW - I HATE that [name]Ronan[/name] Keating has that name, and in this country it is SO associated with him. I think the association is enough to rule it out for me sadly  Same with [name]Kian[/name] - I wouldn’t mind if I WAS a Westlife fan but I’m not, so I hate the incorrect assumption.

[name]Ciaran[/name] is a lovely name! I do so love the Irish names…but I also know a LOT of Keirans/Ciarons - none of them children, all teenagers to people in their mid-20s - but a lot of them  (large Irish population in Liverpool!)

I guess I still want a name that, when its announced, will cause a reaction - even if people say “Omg I’ve never heard THAT before!”…I’d rather them react that way than it just be “Oh, yeah I know x amount of people with that name…” you know?!

I think [name]Tyne[/name], [name]Macaulay[/name] and [name]Georgie[/name] are our top contenders right now.

Charliesmommy126 - I assumed the same thing with [name]Macaulay[/name], but I was surprised when I mentioned the name to a woman of around 60 and she immediately joked “Oh thats a nice name. [name]Don[/name]'t leave him alone at [name]Christmas[/name] though!” - kind of put me of as I had expected only people in their 20s or 30s would make the connection
I see what you mean about [name]Georgie[/name] - its easy for me to imagine it on a grown man coz it was my Uncles name, but I can see that it could sound cutesy!
[name]Noah[/name] I adore, but I’m actually not religious and I don’t like the idea of people assuming I am because of his name - so maybe I need to rethink that a little more
[name]Noah[/name] [name]Declan[/name] would be cute, but the middle names HAVE to be [name]William[/name] [name]Henry[/name] - I should have mentioned that in my post, sorry hehe!

I’m so sorry. We revealed some names over christmas and got very bad feedback. It sucks, [name]Ossian[/name] does not sound like a suicide bomber (never thought of that with any name really!). I’m doing fine, had a scare a few days ago but I’m all good now! You?

[name]Tyne[/name], [name]Mac[/name] & [name]Georgie[/name] are all great choices!

You have some really great names on your list here!
[name]Tyne[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name] IT. I get that it would be misheard some of the time, but I don’t think it would be too often. I would [name]LOVE[/name] to meet a little boy named [name]Tyne[/name]. Plus, the personal connection just makes it even more perfect. [name]Tyne[/name] [name]William[/name] [name]Henry[/name] is GORGEOUS to the max. I would definitely go with this one!
[name]Macaulay[/name] - Yep, sorry, only associate it with [name]Macaulay[/name] Culkin - and from what I hear, he’s kind of gone of the deep end? I don’t love this one so much.
[name]Georgie[/name] - Very cute on a five-year-old, but I think it might sound weird on a fifty-year-old.
[name]Raleigh[/name] - I don’t think it’s too similar. I actually really like it!
[name]Lorne[/name] - Not my favorite. Also think it sounds feminine.
[name]Noah[/name] - I agree, it’s a lovely name. I don’t think people would automatically assume you were religious - it’s become quite popular and the biblical association isn’t as in your face as some other names. However, if popularity is an issue, it really is everywhere now.
[name]Micah[/name] - I associate this with a girl’s name, even though I know it is traditionally boy. Not my favorite on your list.
[name]Logan[/name] - [name]Don[/name]'t really care for this one. If you’re going to go with one of the more popular ones, choose [name]Noah[/name].
[name]Hayden[/name] - They are very similar [name]IMO[/name]. Of course, he won’t know you as [name]Hayley[/name] but everyone else will and [name]Hayley[/name] and [name]Hayden[/name] are very matchy.
[name]Declan[/name] - Actually, I love it! [name]Shame[/name] your husband doesn’t like it, but you’ve got several other good ones so you should be able to find one you both love.
[name]Ronan[/name] - I like it. Of course, I don’t have the association with the band, so it’s different. I’m usually inclined to stay away from names I have bad associations with because then that’s all I’ll think of for a while!
[name]Kian[/name] - Again, don’t know the band, but I prefer [name]Ronan[/name] to [name]Kian[/name] anyways if you’re going the singer/band route.
My top three for you would be 1. [name]TYNE[/name] (favorite, favorite, favorite!!) 2. [name]Raleigh[/name] 3. [name]Noah[/name]
Of course, though, as you can probably tell from my comment, I think you should go with [name]Tyne[/name]. It’s FABULOUS!

[name]Ottilie[/name] - oh no! What sort of scare? I’m glad you’re ok now! I’m fine, everythings going good so far…except that I actually keep forgetting that I’m pregnant and then have the sudden panic when I remember and realise how soon he will be here!
My mother has an amazing talent for plucking completely random criticisms out of the air and destroying names for me! I’m sorry you had the same problems over [name]Christmas[/name] What did people say to you?
Hey I notice Belphoebe has gone from your girl list?! Noooo :frowning:

Lilyflower - Thank you so much for your thoughts! I’m pleased that you’re such a fan of [name]Tyne[/name] [name]William[/name] [name]Henry[/name] - it was the name that we had from the beginning but some peoples reactions had put me off. I do still love it though so its a definite possibility!

My favorites are [name]Logan[/name], [name]Micah[/name], [name]Noah[/name], and [name]Declan[/name]

Could you do another name to get the nn [name]Mac[/name]?
Actually [name]Micah[/name] nn [name]Mac[/name] would work. Or McKale?

Also what do you think of [name]Roman[/name] instead of [name]Ronan[/name]? I know a little boy with this name.

I think [name]Logan[/name] is the one stand out from this list. Strong, charming, friendly, smart-sounding. I think that’s your winner. Runners up: [name]Georgie[/name], [name]Lorne[/name] and [name]Hayden[/name].

I do love a lot of the names on your new list, my favourites being; [name]Kian[/name], [name]Declan[/name], [name]Micah[/name], [name]Macauley[/name] and [name]Ronan[/name]. I like these names because they aren’t too common - [name]Kian[/name] the only one in the top 100. [name]Cian[/name]/[name]Kian[/name] is a new crush of mine but I’m also a big Westlife fan so I wouldn’t want to assume that’s the reason.

[name]Logan[/name] and [name]George[/name] are too common for me, while [name]Georgie[/name] is too nicknamey. [name]Hayden[/name] and any -aden names are ridiculously chavvy so I wouldn’t use them. I’d put [name]Raleigh[/name] in the chav bracket too, and isn’t it the name of a brand of bikes. It rhymes with your name too, so that’s a no no from me.

I don’t like [name]Lorne[/name] at all, how about [name]Lorcan[/name]? That’s a great Irish name. I think the meaning behind [name]Tyne[/name] is nice but it is more middle name material.

I think something like [name]Micah[/name] [name]William[/name] [name]Henry[/name], [name]Kian[/name] [name]William[/name] [name]Henry[/name] or [name]Declan[/name] [name]William[/name] [name]Henry[/name] would be nice.

[name]Kerrie[/name] - I really like [name]Roman[/name] but babies surname will be Gl@ss, so considering there are lots of glazing companies with the name [name]Roman[/name] Gl@ss its completeley unusable for us unfortunately! Thanks for the suggestion though

Smarterlilac - I do [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Logan[/name]. I just wish it wasn’t SO popular  It is the only thing putting me off…

Sheflieswithherownwings - I like the spelling [name]Cian[/name] as it at least makes it different from the Westlife guy, but then the baby has a close cousin named Ciah ([name]Kier[/name] with a horrid spelling) so I’m not sure if its too close
[name]George[/name] is not an option at all due to popularity and the fact that a friend of mine is due two weeks after me with a boy named [name]George[/name], but I like [name]Georgie[/name] purely for honouring my late uncle.
I know what you mean about the [name]Ayden[/name] names - Its a shame as I have always loved [name]Hayden[/name] ([name]Ever[/name] since seeing one on Home & Away in the 90s lol!) - [name]Raleigh[/name] was a recent suggestion from my mother but I hadn’t even thought of the bike brand

[name]Lorcan[/name] I considered briefly but got bad feedback from, and decided it sounds too geeky and reminds me of the word [name]Vulcan[/name] for some reason.

OH has completely vetoed [name]Declan[/name] now and isn’t keen on [name]Micah[/name] but I’m working on that. Thanks for your thoughts!

I’m still voting for [name]Tyne[/name], especially if [name]Georgie[/name] and [name]Mac[/name] is out.

Belphoebe was dropped because someone in the family said it sounds made up, and boyfriend got cold feet and vetoed all the names we’d picked out. I’ve halfway talked him back into Illyria and [name]Ceridwen[/name].

I’m placing my vote for [name]Tyne[/name] or maybe since [name]Ronan[/name] has a bad association you’d like my sons name…[name]Nolan[/name]?

[name]Hayley[/name], out of curiosity, how are most traditional Irish names perceived in [name]England[/name]? Not the sleek trendy imports like [name]Siobhan[/name] or [name]Killian[/name], but the older names? I only lived in the UK for three years but it was in the ultimate bastion of snobbery ([name]Christ[/name] Church, [name]Oxford[/name]) and I got the impression that since there has been such a troubled centuries-long relationship that has led to many poor Irish people to try to seek a better life in [name]England[/name], Irish names were thought of as déclassé. All the way up through the 80s really there was migration, with many migrants ending up on the dole, etc. The traveller community has Irish roots, right? Anyway, I wondered if that was the reason behi d strong gut reactions to [name]Declan[/name].

[name]MAC[/name]: what a fun, rollicking nickname. I still think [name]Macauley[/name] Culkin owns the name. What about [name]Macallister[/name], MacAlpin, MacLeod, [name]MacLean[/name], MacAllen, or even Mackland?

[name]Don[/name]'t care for monosyllabic names like [name]Lorne[/name] paired with Glass (can make an exception for [name]Tyne[/name] though).

[name]Don[/name]'t care for diminutives like [name]Georgie[/name] as full names. And it’s a little close to [name]Geordie[/name]!

[name]Logan[/name] and [name]Hayden[/name] are ultra-trendy.

I’m not sure a soft biblical name like [name]Micah[/name] or [name]Noah[/name] would work (in the US Glass is a largely Jewish surname, so [name]Noah[/name] Glass would 100% be assumed to be Jewish).

[name]Kian[/name] is out due to the cousin.

I had no idea [name]Ronan[/name] was a one-man name in [name]England[/name], too bad!

I actually like [name]Raleigh[/name] a lot; it’s hip and different. I do t think of bikes at all, but Sir [name]Walter[/name] [name]Raleigh[/name], who is one of the more interesting men ever to have lived.

[name]Blade[/name]; It depends on your social rank. In upper middle class and the upper class it is definitely looked down upon. When were you at [name]Christ[/name] Church, [name]Blade[/name]? Maybe we’ve crossed paths…

2002-2005

Were you there too?! I was in the GCR of course; did undergrad here in the States. Didn’t know hardly any ChCh undergraduates.

I wouldn’t say [name]Georgie[/name] & [name]Mac[/name] are out yet, I still think those and [name]Tyne[/name] are the top 3. I wish I was more open minded to more choices

Aww that is such a shame, I ADORED Belphoebe for you! I don’t think it sounds made up at all, it has [name]Phoebe[/name] in it - how can it?!

I’ve never heard of [name]Nolan[/name] used as a name before, I’m not usually a fan of surname-y names used as first names but I do actually like that one! Thanks for the suggestion, I will certainly mull it over and see what OH thinks

[name]Blade[/name] - thanks for your thoughts, I always appreciate your point of view
With the Irish thing - yes what [name]Ottilie[/name] said, in certain areas there would be a degree of snobbery with it but as a lot of people from Liverpool (Where I am from) descended from the Irish anyway, Irish names tend to be very common place here. Unfortunately for me, my OH does actually have a negative opinion of the Irish which is probably partially why he is anti-[name]Declan[/name]. Plus there is a very (UK only) famous [name]Geordie[/name] with the name and I think thats another reason he doesn’t like it, as he thinks its too much of an association.

Thank you for the other [name]Mac[/name] suggestions but as much as I love the idea of [name]Mac[/name], [name]Macaulay[/name] is the only name I like with the [name]Mac[/name] element to it - interesting that you think [name]Maclean[/name] is usable as a first name though, as that actually IS my surname! I never considered it as usable.

I had the same worries about the [name]Georgie[/name]/[name]Geordie[/name] thing too! It only occurred to me last night after posting

Also good point about jewish names with the surname Glass! I hadn’t thought of that.

[name]Raleigh[/name] brought up thoughts of [name]Walter[/name] [name]Raleigh[/name] for me too, which I did think would be quite nice as the place we live (Exeter) has a lot of associations with him, so it would seem appropriate. The bicycle brand does put me off though.

I think I need to try to take a leaf out of [name]Ottilie[/name]'s book, narrow down a top 5 and come back for more thoughts!

Aaah, I was there from 2000-2003 (ba), 2008-2010 (came back to do my ma). Was at [name]Chelsea[/name] college of art and design in between.

[name]Hayley[/name], a top 5 is a good idea! Good luck sweets!
