Name style

How and when did you discover your naming style for girls? I am struggling to find mine.

Someone mentioned [name_f]Ermentrude[/name_f] on one of my threads. Fell in love with it and started searching similar names. Turns out I love ancient outlandish names!

Honestly my naming style is kind of a mix of styles. I like mostly vintage and nature-inspired names, but I discovered this by keeping a running list of my favorites. Then I use those names as a reference when looking for new names.

For example, I kept seeing [name_f]Margo[/name_f] and [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] and I loved them! These to me are soft and feminine but still strong. They also feel classic and like they have history. When looking for names similar to this, I found [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], which are now two of my favorites! I also really love [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_u]Willow[/name_u], and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], which are clearly nature names with soft I sounds. Using those led me to find [name_u]Aster[/name_u], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], and [name_u]Wren[/name_u]. I think these share the soft vowels, distinct sounds, and nature inspiration while focusing more on the A and E sounds. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_u]June[/name_u] are more classic, simple options I’ve always loved, and they brought about the suggestions of [name_f]Clover[/name_f] and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. Doing this I’ve discovered that I prefer short, soft names that are feminine, have distinct consonants and are easy to spell/pronounce.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite way to find names that are my style is to use

I like to type in all my favorites and see what it suggests. It gets a lot easier to build a list and style once you locked down a handful you love and work from there. I also like that the website helps you blend styles to find a sweet spot name. This is how we eventually decided on [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. My husband and I have very different styles, but we kept building a list and making additions/cuts until something stuck. Best of luck!

I think I always knew… But finding the right words to describe it was a bit challenging

I was looking for names with a lot of nn potential & came across an article about hyphenated names.

Mine is a bit all over the place, but having spent time making and collecting lists, I’ve figured I usually like short, offbeat names. It might take a while to find your style and sometimes names will pop up that won’t fit, just to confuse you

For girls I like names that I can picture being the lead role in a movie! 1-2 syllables, less common, not too frilly. Ex. the movie Juno. I didn’t discover this until recently…I started to think about what traits/personalities each of my names had in my head, and that was their commonality!

I never really settled on one style, honestly. I just made lists of the names I really liked, paid attention to what styles they were, and realized I like names from a lot of different styles with an emphasis on unisex, nature, and classic names when it comes to naming a real child. But I truly love names that are all over the board.

I’ve never settled on boxing myself into one set style but there’s definitely trends I’m drawn to (Celtic, botanical, vintage, medieval).

Tbh I’d say a bigger tell is what level of familiarity you prefer for a name to have - do you prefer the classics or do you want something a bit more out there?

That’s often a good starting point for working out what you’re into, esp if trying to prepare for talking with a partner (e.g. I’m all about the outlandish names so any future partner is gonna have to accept we ain’t having a [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] or a [name_f]Kate[/name_f] :joy:)

I know that most classics, while pretty, don’t appeal to me. But I am not drawn to extremely unusual names either.

i’m not really sure how i would label my style of girls’ names, but i know i like rare, often vintage, often unisex kinds of names, pulled either from my favorite books or languages i like or my family and our ancestors.

i’m way better at describing my style through the sounds i like, so maybe it would be helpful for you to think this way? i love names that end in -ie or -t or -o sounds, and i love names that start with b, s, t, g, and o, while i don’t usually like names that start with e or L. think about what sounds you like to hear, or maybe what languages you like the sound of. i speak french so i really adore french names, and i’m a classics student so i like ancient greek names a lot.

i think the best way to find your style is to look at what names you like and see what they all have in common! eliminate the things you don’t like and what’s left will be your style.

My name style has definitely changed over the years… but I’ve kept a short list of names to keep referring to.

I’ve noticed alot of overlaps in theme with my favorite names, and some outliers (yet I’ve chosen to keep them as contenders)… but for the most part I gravitate towards vintage name and also unisex names for girls (as my name is also considered unisex… which I guess I like for my own potential future daughters). :woman_shrugging:

Just see what fits and go from there.
It helps saying the names out loud, and if you can’t imagine calling out that name in public, or any similar names, you should probably try a different style, etc.

Simple, enduring, literary/musical, and cheerful!

Hmm… well I think the majority of my names are Celtic in some way. I also tend to use more out-there word names, like Noctiluca and/or Driftwood. I do like many ocean-related names, of course

When I first started out on nameberry, I became exposed to more names than ever before! I think i just gradually fell in love with certain names, and they all happened to fit together quite nicely!
