Name suggestions please.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], this is my first time posting! I’m due with girl number 2 in [name_f]October[/name_f] and I am looking for unusual/ uncommon names that are quite easy to pronounce and spell.

Our favourite is currently [name_f]Rainey[/name_f].
Other names on our list are [name_u]Romy[/name_u], [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], [name_f]Asta[/name_f], [name_f]Lainey[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f].

Older sister is [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] and our last name is 3 syllables and starts with M.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] after other suggestions and thoughts on our current list  I love [name_f]Rainey[/name_f] but am worried there’s something else out there I’ll love too! Thanks!

I don’t like [name_f]Rainey[/name_f] with [name_f]Luna[/name_f].

From your list I think [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] and [name_u]Romy[/name_u] match well with older sister. Although I like [name_f]Lainey[/name_f], I think it clashes with [name_f]Luna[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] goes best with [name_f]Luna[/name_f].

[name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Lainey[/name_f] sounds a bit too matchy for me and as much as I love [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] I think it’s too much with [name_f]Luna[/name_f] too. I think [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Asta[/name_f] clash a bit. [name_u]Romy[/name_u] would be my second choice after [name_f]Astrid[/name_f].

I vote [name_u]Romy[/name_u] with [name_f]Luna[/name_f]!

I agree with pps that [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] is the best match for [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. It’s really lovely. Other ideas:
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] with [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and I think [name_u]Rory[/name_u] will make a great nickname since you have [name_u]Romy[/name_u] on your list.

I like [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] and [name_u]Romy[/name_u] for you!

Depending where you are in the world, I think the ones you have that fit your criteria of ‘unusual, uncommon, but easy to pronounce and spell’ are [name_u]Romy[/name_u] and [name_f]Astrid[/name_f]–they’re lovely with [name_f]Luna[/name_f]!

[name_f]Rainey[/name_f] and [name_f]Lainey[/name_f] will both have spelling and mis-hearing challenges ([name_u]Rainy[/name_u], [name_u]Reign[/name_u], [name_f]Reina[/name_f]; [name_f]Leni[/name_f], [name_u]Laney[/name_u], [name_u]Lanie[/name_u], [name_f]Alayna[/name_f], [name_f]Elaine[/name_f]), plus [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Lainey[/name_f] are very close for sisters!

[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] gives you an astronomical theme, and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is similar in popularity to [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. It’s a really good match, with a clear theme of Latin words for things in the night sky. Have you considered what you might call a third child in that case, though? Does that matter to you? If it were me, I’d feel like I’d absolutely have to call a third daughter [name_f]Stella[/name_f] so she didn’t feel left out!

[name_f]Asta[/name_f] fits your criteria for uncommon and unusual, though it’s so uncommon in English that you might have some trouble with it–misheard for [name_f]Aster[/name_f], or with her sister’s name, for [name_f]Astra[/name_f].

[name_m]How[/name_m] do you feel about the popularity of [name_f]Luna[/name_f]? It’s #37 in the USA and #78 in the UK–is it more popular than you’d like for her sister? [name_m]Just[/name_m] about right?

If you like where [name_f]Luna[/name_f] sits in terms of its popularity (assuming that you’re in the US!):
[name_f]Maya[/name_f], [name_f]Cora[/name_f], [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Nova[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Athena[/name_f], [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_u]Eden[/name_u], [name_f]Amara[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f]

If you’d like the name to be rarer than [name_f]Luna[/name_f], and more like [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] (US numbers):
[name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_u]Winter[/name_u], [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_f]Liv[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Nola[/name_f], [name_f]Mavis[/name_f], [name_f]Opal[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f], [name_u]Zola[/name_u], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Elodie[/name_f],

If you’d like the name to be very rare, like [name_u]Romy[/name_u] and [name_f]Asta[/name_f] (US numbers):
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f], [name_u]Vida[/name_u], [name_f]Coral[/name_f], [name_f]Honor[/name_f], [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], [name_u]Ever[/name_u], [name_f]Fern[/name_f], [name_f]Amada[/name_f], [name_f]Saskia[/name_f], [name_f]Avis[/name_f], [name_f]Merrin[/name_f], [name_f]Finola[/name_f], [name_u]Seren[/name_u], [name_f]Nell[/name_f]

[name_f]Astrid[/name_f] is a favorite! [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] would make a beautiful set.

I’m in Australia. When I named my daughter in 2016, [name_f]Luna[/name_f] was quite unheard of. Then [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_u]Legend[/name_u] used it and it’s jumped in popularity which I’m not happy about! So I do prefer more uncommon than [name_f]Luna[/name_f].

I myself have a unusual name that’s hard to spell so I guess to me [name_f]Rainey[/name_f] doesn’t seem overly tricky, but I can see what you mean in terms of interpretation of spelling.

Because of our Australian accents, [name_f]Aster[/name_f] and [name_f]Asta[/name_f] are pronounced very very similar so that would not be a concern for us

Thank you for all your suggestions and your thoughts. It’s given me lots to think about. Our current top 3 on the list are [name_f]Rainey[/name_f], [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] and [name_u]Romy[/name_u] so we will have to work out which we think will suit best.

I love your suggested names but actually know an [name_u]Aspen[/name_u], a [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and a [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]! My friends seem to have similar taste to me and I don’t like using uncommon names that people I know have used. Makes it tricky!

[name_f]Solenne[/name_f]
[name_f]Vienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Aviva[/name_f]
[name_f]Brianne[/name_f] or Brienne
[name_f]Briony[/name_f]
Avonlea
[name_f]Carys[/name_f] or [name_f]Cerys[/name_f]
[name_f]Mazarine[/name_f]
[name_f]Nephele[/name_f]

If it helps, NSW publishes its top 100 names (if I include the link I think my post will get caught in the Spam filter, but it should be googleable!). [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] was #55 in 2017; [name_f]Luna[/name_f] was #66. I didn’t see any of your other choices on the list.

In [name_f]Canada[/name_f], just BC, [name_f]Alberta[/name_f], and [name_m]Quebec[/name_m] publish some kind of decent name data–but along with 40% of the country’s population, I live in [name_m]Ontario[/name_m]…which occasionally publishes a top 25. I know what it’s like to live in a country that doesn’t publish good name data–such a frustration
