I am only a few weeks away from having my second daughter, and my husband and I were leaning toward the name [name]Poppy[/name]. I love the name, but I’ve read some unfavorable comments and I’m starting to doubt. Our first daughter is [name]Fable[/name], and I’ve really struggled to find a complementary sibling name. So what do you think of [name]Poppy[/name]? Any other suggestions? I’m starting to feel really anxious about going into labor without a name!
I love [name]Poppy[/name]! It’s so whimsical and fun, and I think the flower connection is so great. [name]Poppy[/name] complements [name]Fable[/name] so well!
[name]Poppy[/name] would be a serious contender for me, as well (likely a MN, or a NN), except for the fact that my children will call my dad [name]Poppy[/name]/Poppa, so I figured that’d be a bit confusing, lol.
Have you considered [name]Posy[/name]? I think that’s even a bit more quirky than [name]Poppy[/name]. I would probably use a fuller name, personally, but I think [name]Posy[/name]'s adorable. Or even [name]Primrose[/name] or [name]Mariposa[/name], nn [name]Posy[/name]?
Good luck!
The grandfather reference is one of my primary concerns. I might consider [name]Posy[/name] though. Also like [name]Primrose[/name] but I just don’t think I can do it because of The Hunger Games. Thanks for the suggestions!
I wouldn’t let that bother me, I don’t think. I love [name]Poppy[/name] so much that I had actually considered using it to honor my dad, haha. Maybe something like [name]Josephine[/name] nn [name]Poppy[/name] would make it more usable, or [name]Penelope[/name] nn [name]Poppy[/name], but I think [name]Fable[/name] and [name]Poppy[/name] work much better, just as they are.
I think [name]Poppy[/name] is adorable, and a PERFECT match for [name]Fable[/name]! I wouldn’t let the father/grandfather reference get to you. Poppies are beautiful flowers that are fairly well known, so my first impression is definitely the flower. I’m thinking most other people’s will be too. [name]Posey[/name] is also a wonderful suggestion!
[name]Fable[/name] and [name]Poppy[/name] are fabulous together. If you can get away with [name]Fable[/name], [name]Poppy[/name] shouldnt hold you back. I think you should use it. I go back and forth with this one. It is so cute. Maybe a lil too cute? [name]Graham[/name] ([name]Gram[/name]) works despite the grandmother reference, so why not [name]Poppy[/name] despite the grandfather reference? Good luck!
I just can’t see a grown up [name]Poppy[/name]. I wouldn’t want it to be my name, I already (age 24) feel to old for it. But I know many people love it.
[name]Just[/name] make sure she’ll never go to [name]Austria[/name], Germany and Switzerland since the [name]German[/name] word “poppen” means…let’s just translate it in “having sex” there.
Good points!
I think [name]Poppy[/name] is sort of silly, personally. My main issue with it is that “[name]Poppy[/name]” sounds like a name a child calls their grandfather. The other issue is that I can only imagine [name]Poppy[/name] on an energetic, vibrant extrovert. I can’t imagine a shy, laid back girl named [name]Poppy[/name]. In that way I don’t find it very versatile. [name]Poppy[/name] is great as a quirky, fun nickname, but I just don’t like it as a given name.
That’s just my opinion. If [name]Poppy[/name] is the only name you and your husband can imagine for your daughter, go for it.
Honestly, I’d be wary of a name that’s one simple typo away from Poopy. I also strongly feel that, while it may be adorable on a toddler, it will not be so flattering on a grown woman. What about [name]Opal[/name], [name]Juniper[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], [name]Cora[/name], [name]Wren[/name], [name]Nora[/name], [name]Willow[/name], [name]Lilac[/name], [name]Honora[/name], [name]Lark[/name]?
I see what you mean about a grown up [name]Poppy[/name], but I actually worry more about that for my daughter [name]Fable[/name]. It wasn’t something I considered when we named her. But there are so many unusual names these days, I think the abnormal will be more normal for the next generation. Or maybe I’m just kidding myself!
Interestingly, [name]Poppy[/name] is one of the top UK baby names.
Think of it this way. [name]Fable[/name] could easily be nicknamed [name]Fay/name if she prefers. [name]Poppy[/name], on the other hand, has no natural nickname to fall back on.

I really like floral names, but poppies to me symbolize either war-torn fields (Flanders [name]Field[/name], etc) or opium and I don’t really like the imagery. [name]Even[/name] the Victorian meaning of poppy, relating to sleep, and in [name]Wizard[/name] of [name]Oz[/name], is an opium reference. It’s kind of cool in a goth way, but just too much for me, personally.
Wikipedia:
As a result of its immediate popularity, parts of the poem were used in propaganda efforts and appeals to recruit soldiers and raise money selling war bonds. Its references to the red poppies that grew over the graves of fallen soldiers resulted in the remembrance poppy becoming one of the world’s most recognized memorial symbols for soldiers who have died in conflict. The poem and poppy are prominent Remembrance Day symbols throughout the Commonwealth of Nations
So maybe for a Memorial [name]Day[/name]/Veteran’s [name]Day[/name]/Rememberance [name]Day[/name] baby, but it’s still really dark connotation-wise to me.
To me, [name]Poppy[/name] is your dad or grandpa
And as @kash mentioned, what name could she fall back on? Pop? That’s what I call my dad. Does she at least have a safer middle name? If so then I guess it’s OK
I know three Poppys my age (mid-late twenties), one [name]North[/name] American and two Brits. [name]One[/name]'s a primary school teacher (the north american one), one’s a really impressive [name]London[/name] lawyer, and one’s a bit of a hippy, but a grad student and a really great person I think it grows up better than does [name]Daisy[/name] or [name]Lily[/name].
[name]Fable[/name], [name]Evening[/name], and [name]Halcyon[/name] are my guilty pleasure word-names. So glad to hear of a real life [name]Fable[/name]!
