Name woes with husband

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband wants a girl name picked out like yesterday even though we are only 10 weeks. Our boy name is [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Kenton[/name_m] (it took mentioning the nn [name_u]Theo[/name_u] to get an agreement here. [name_m]Kenton[/name_m] is an honor name). He keeps suggesting names of people he knows like [name_f]Brenda[/name_f], [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u], [name_u]Jodi[/name_u], or [name_f]Amy[/name_f]. I like names like [name_f]Claudia[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Elinor[/name_f], or [name_f]Yvette[/name_f]. We are both frustrated with each other. The only name he has liked that I have mentioned is [name_u]Ember[/name_u] and that was just meh. I cannot get behind any name he is suggesting. I just hope we are having a boy lol. [name_m]Can[/name_m] I get some suggestions to bring to him? We have animals named [name_f]Kelcey[/name_f] and [name_f]Sara[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f] and would like to stay away from similar sounding names.

Well, the good news is that you have plenty of time still, despite him wanting a name decided yesterday.

Instead of talking about individual names, why donā€™t you take a step back and talk about what you each like about the names you like? If you can understand where each other is coming from, maybe you find some common ground and then start talking about names that meet somewhere in the middle?

Maybe sth that goes nice with [name_m]Theodor[/name_m] but with a shorter simpler nickname?

Names I think you might like that could have many nn options and some shorter names that maybe donā€™t need a nn but would be sth you both could find good:

I really like @Tab99 's suggestion of [name_f]Thea[/name_f] for a girl if you both like Theodore/Theo for a boy! [name_f]Thea[/name_f] is a great name, as a nickname or on its own.

Some random others that I feel might lie in the space between your taste and your husbandā€™s taste:

[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]

[name_f]Brenna[/name_f] (feels really different from [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] to me)
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] (with its zillion nicknames you might both find one that works)

Perhaps [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] or Teadora? I LOVE [name_f]Thea[/name_f] but maybe he would like a longer version and you would still get [name_f]Thea[/name_f] as a nickname.

Wow those are some different styles! Random thought, [name_u]Kenzie[/name_u] or [name_f]Kensley[/name_f] could be a girls name that works with your honor name. Though I doubt its either of your styles lol. I think maybe you should look at classic names that are also more popular like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. He seems to like classic dated names and and you seem to like classic unusual names. So maybeā€¦.

I definitely agree with PPā€™s idea of seeing if he can articulate what he likes about the names that heā€™s suggested. [name_f]My[/name_f] hunch is that itā€™s either a feeling of nostalgia for the era that these names were popular, or that heā€™s one of those namers who needs a personal connection to a name so heā€™s suggesting the names of women he admires.

You have very different styles, with many of your favorites in the uncommon classics category, with a touch of posh, preppy vibes, and many of his sounding dated in the 80s and 90s and favoring certain sounds, like B, D, M, long-O, and Y-endings. [name_f]My[/name_f] approach is along similar lines as @Ehrob1 above, in that Iā€™m going to try and find names that incorporate elements from each of your preferred styles, mainly attempting to find more modern or classical takes on the things he gravitates towards.

You could also try finding nicknames for your favorites that he likes, like you did with [name_u]Theo[/name_u] / [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. [name_f]Nell[/name_f] for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Elinor[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f] and [name_f]Etta[/name_f] for [name_f]Yvette[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_u]Penny[/name_u] for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f] and [name_f]Nora[/name_f] for [name_f]Elinor[/name_f]. Other suggestions include [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] (Jo, [name_u]Josie[/name_u], Posy), [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] (Dolly), [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] (Rory), [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] (Hattie), [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] (Goldie), [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] (Julie), [name_f]Indira[/name_f] (Indie), [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] (Amy), [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] (Dot, [name_f]Dora[/name_f], Thea), [name_f]Bronwen[/name_f] (Bren), [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] (Tori, Vickie), etc.

I know these suggestions are kind of all over the place stylistically, so Iā€™m going to simplify a little and offer a list of my favorite ā€œcompromiseā€ names for you:

  • [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] - I think this is the perfect marriage of [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] and [name_u]Jodi[/name_u]. It sounds almost exactly like [name_u]Jodi[/name_u], and it has the same [name_f]El[/name_f]- prefix and syllable count as [name_f]Elinor[/name_f]. The best part is that it totally fits your vibe of uncommon classics and doesnā€™t sound dated. Nicknames could be [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], or even [name_f]Lottie[/name_f].
  • [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] - I feel like this is a good bridge between [name_u]Jodi[/name_u] and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. Thereā€™s a certain fresh, saucy, spirited vibe I get from both [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], and your husband could use [name_u]Jo[/name_u] or [name_u]Josie[/name_u] as nicknames.
  • [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] - I feel like this name combines the best of [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u], [name_u]Ember[/name_u], [name_f]Elinor[/name_f], and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. It has the rhythm of [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u], the [name_f]Em[/name_f]- prefix of [name_u]Ember[/name_u], the ā€œelineā€ which is so close to [name_f]Elinor[/name_f], and it has a softened version of that same fresh, spunky feeling I get from [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. There are also lots of nickname options: [name_f]Em[/name_f], [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], and [name_f]Lena[/name_f] come to mind.
  • [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] - I think this could be a good bridge between [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] and [name_u]Jodi[/name_u]. It has the grandeur of [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] and shares many of the same sounds, while [name_u]Cody[/name_u] could be a creative nickname to offer your husband (other options include [name_u]Corrie[/name_u], [name_f]Lia[/name_f], [name_f]Delia[/name_f], etc.)
  • [name_f]Odette[/name_f] - I think this is a great compromise between [name_u]Jodi[/name_u] and [name_f]Yvette[/name_f]. It has the long O and strong D sounds of [name_u]Jodi[/name_u] with the soft -ette ending of [name_f]Yvette[/name_f]. Itā€™s also a very delicate, uncommon classic that I think fits right in with your favorites.
  • [name_f]Calendra[/name_f] - This variant of [name_f]Calandra[/name_f] might be too out there for either of you, but it could be an interesting bridge between [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] and [name_f]Brenda[/name_f]. It shares everything but the U and I with [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] and everything but the B with [name_f]Brenda[/name_f]. It also has a beautiful meaning (lark), and the wearable nickname [name_f]Callie[/name_f].
  • [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f] - I think this makes a good bridge between [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u]. It has the rhythm and strong M sound of [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] with the [name_u]French[/name_u] sound and all the same letters as [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. The nickname game isnā€™t quite as strong as with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], but [name_f]Pomme[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], and [name_f]Lena[/name_f] are all options.
  • [name_u]Everly[/name_u] - I feel like this could be a good bridge between [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] and [name_f]Yvette[/name_f]. It has the rhythm and -ly ending of [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] and the soft E and V sounds of [name_f]Yvette[/name_f], as well as the same potential for [name_f]Evie[/name_f] as a nickname.
  • [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] - I feel like this name references two of his favorites - the rhythm and -ly ending of [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] and the Am- prefix of [name_f]Amy[/name_f] - while being firmly in your camp in terms of style. It has the cadence and elegance of [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] and the [name_u]French[/name_u] sound of [name_f]Yvette[/name_f], and husband could get [name_f]Amy[/name_f] as a nickname.

I feel like some names that bridge the style gap might include [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Samantha[/name_f], [name_f]Lauren[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f]. I wonder if a zippy nickname might incline him towards some of your favorites, like [name_u]Theo[/name_u] did. [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] feels especially ripe for great nicknames: [name_u]Pen[/name_u], [name_u]Penny[/name_u], [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Nella[/name_f]. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] also has great nickname potential: [name_f]Betsy[/name_f], [name_f]Betty[/name_f], [name_f]Beth[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f]. [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] nicknamed [name_u]Jet[/name_u] or [name_u]Jules[/name_u] is also lovely and feels like a great sister to a [name_m]Theodore[/name_m].
Good luck!

You both seem to like names that are familiar, warm, and traditionally feminine, but not super trendy. I wonder if you can find some common ground there. Are there any women in particular you or your husband would like to honor when naming a daughter? If so, there is always the option to use that womanā€™s name as inspiration while still choosing a name that suits your style. For instance, to honor [name_u]Jodi[/name_u], you could opt for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Joanna[/name_f], or [name_u]Josie[/name_u] and call her [name_u]Jo[/name_u]. To honor [name_f]Amy[/name_f], you could just [name_f]AmĆ©lie[/name_f] or [name_f]Amalia[/name_f]. Other options that might appeal to both of your styles could be:

[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Angelina[/name_f]
[name_u]Antonia[/name_u]
[name_f]Annabelle[/name_f]

I feel like this comes up a lot in relationships when couples take different inspiration for their naming styles. Honestly I remember when I first asked my own husband what names he liked and his first response was mostly to list names basically of people he knew or more common in our own generation. He didnā€™t mention many and I remember thinking one was a perfectly lovely name, however it was already someone we knows name! I think maybe this was more an indication of these are just the names they feel comfortable with because theyā€™ve been around them, a really good way to combat that feeling of having all your suggestions rejectedā€¦ Probably on the basis of unfamiliarity ā€¦ Could be exposure to the names of style you prefer.
Theodore is a very handsome name and if you have a boy, itā€™s wonderful that youā€™re all ready and in agreement on his name! However for a girl I do understand and I have to say I think your style is lovely and honestly more what your childrenā€™s generation feels like. There are different styles across the board but these names are coming back into style and due to their vintage nature and classic appealā€¦ They arenā€™t going to be stuck in a generation or be tied too strongly to specific individual or even like some current more passing fashionsā€¦ oR cause for a lot of explanation.
I think you should keep your list, and add about ten names that youā€™re comfortable with considering. Then really go through that list and remove anything too close to your pets names, that has initials that conflict with your surname, whatever doesnā€™t work with the middle name either, say the names clearly and like for example I love a few names that I have a hard time saying clearly and in my head theyā€™re very nice but when I say them I feel like I donā€™t feel as comfortableā€¦ Anything like that. Think of Nick names and try the Nick names with your surname and say the name together with yours and your husbandā€™s namesā€¦ Then sit down and think about the qualities and associations of each name. How can you bring out a names character when you present it as an optionā€¦

For an example of just altering perception of a nameā€¦ Growing up there was a name of a character in a show I watched, I disliked the name & wondered why that name would have been chosen, later on that name grew on me through another associationā€¦ I mentioned it to my husband and he didnā€™t seem too interested but I brought it up again later and he agreed it could workā€¦And itā€™s currently on our very very short listā€¦ itā€™s not even completely that tastes change, so much as that for example Elinor ā€¦ Lovely nameā€¦ But why we think that isnā€™t universal. I have a personal association that is positive and know at least one child with the name currentlyā€¦ So now I can more see it in general and not just as one associationā€¦ And the more I see it the more I can see it in different ways, if that makes sense. I do think names can sort of be presented in a certain way though and a specific style of names can find an overlap with most any other. If your husband was very determined to use name from a specific show or background for exampleā€¦ ThAt might be harder to addressā€¦ BUt it really does sound like he is just looking at names with comfortable familiarity. And that you can likely work with.
itā€™s very sweet he wants a name chosen, thereā€™s actually some logic to that, finding the perfect name and having that when you find out gender can be very special but also having a plan in advance with a lot of time to think it over and be sure youā€™re sure by the time the baby is born, is good too.

As far as suggestions goā€¦ Iā€™ll make a second responseā€¦
