Nameberry Challeng -- Yugoslavian NM

I’m almost 15 weeks pregnant, yay! We are finding out the sex and DH and I weren’t going to fret too much about widdling down names until we knew the sex, but with a slightly odd naming style I want to try and come up with some combos to focus on a little more. Plus, I’ve had a fever the last couple days. Not so high that I am passed out, just high enough to be non-functional and bored out of my mind!

DH grew up in southern Bosnian (Bosnian father, Serbian mother) and also lived a few years in Croatia. So I say “Yugoslavian” names because he isn’t explicity tied to a specific county. We both kind of think that most of these names are not very usable in the US, but he definitely wants to use a Jugo name for a middle.

As a reference, our last name kind of rhymes with Crisco

We are kind of round and round lately about names in general, but to give you an idea of some we’ve been throwing around:

Girls First:
[name]Eloise[/name] - was our #1 choice for a long time, DH has been shying away lately thinking it’s too “old” sounding. I totally disagree…he needs to come around!
[name]Elizabeth[/name] - to DH this is the “safe” option. I usually like to be a [name]LITTLE[/name] more adventuresome even though I’m a very conservative namer to most on this site, but the name does have a certain appeal because of all the nn options – current fav is [name]Libby[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Elise[/name]
[name]Madeline[/name]
[name]Emily[/name] – Current DH fav. I don’t care for it at all (fine name, but ho hum for me to actually name a kid this)

Girls Middle - obviously not all these are true “Bosnian” names, but these are the Bosnian versions
Lejla - pronounce like [name]Layla[/name]…DH would actually like this as a first name, I don’t care for it in that spot though
[name]Alma[/name] - not what mos think of a Bosnian name, but it is commonly accepted as as the female version of his name…it’s a lovely name, but would just be weird as a first name since it’s similar to his
[name]Emina[/name] - his grandmother’s name and very common to the region he’s from
Zlata
[name]Mira[/name] - general slavic name meaning “peace” in a lot of slavic languages
Ajla - pronounced like [name]Isla[/name]

Boys First
[name]Harrison[/name] - nn [name]Harry[/name]
[name]Frederick[/name] - nn [name]Fritz[/name]…my grandfather’s name, but I really don’t like “[name]Fred[/name]” so just because of that I might not consider it
[name]Reid[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] - nn [name]Teddy[/name]
[name]Piers[/name] - we like this, but a friend’s fiance who we aren’t that close to is the only other person we’ve met with this name…can’t decide if it would be kind of weird since it’s so unusual?
[name]Anders[/name]

Boys Middle
Zlatan
Kenen
Faris
Alen - my dad’s name is [name]Alan[/name]…not sure how much I like naming kids after family members who are alive (not much of an honoring person in general), but he’s always liked this name.

I feel like we’re not really jiving with anything right now, including the middle name issue…more suggestions for both first and middle would be welcome (not that many people are familiar with Bosnian names, but I have hope…berries are great at this!)! DH is almost a naming diva…hard to get him really onto a name lately. And I’m completely lost on putting them together to form one name!

I’m loving [name]Emina[/name]! Would you consider that up front? It has family meaning (I personally put a lot of emphasis on this, I think it gives the name a ton of personal meaning and sentimentality) and it has enough familiar sounds that it would be well received in the US, I think. (Are you in the US?)

Yes, in the US!

Soooooo. Overall not trying to honor one side over the other in the first name spot (which is a consideration with Frederick). Long story, it might cause more bitterness than it’s worth depending on what sex we have and how many kids we have if things are not totally “even” using family names at the end of the day…

[name]Reading[/name] your description the first name that came to mind was Zlatan b/c I used to work with a Bosnian man named that. Then I saw it already on your list!

Is [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Emina[/name] or [name]Eloise[/name] [name]Emina[/name] too much with the double E?

I’m not great with matching first names and middles, but I did hang out with a lot of people from former Yugoslavia in high school. You’ve already mentioned some of their names, but I do remember some more.
Girls names: Zlata, Biljana, [name]Mirjana[/name], [name]Mirna[/name], Dajana (pronounced [name]Diana[/name]), Dragana, [name]Jasmina[/name], [name]Jelena[/name], Gordana, [name]Irina[/name]/[name]Irena[/name]
Guys names: Damir (seemed to be quite popular), Mirza, [name]Goran[/name], Emir (not sure how useable that is as it makes me think of the UAE and Emirates Airline)

OOoh, I like [name]Mirna[/name] more than [name]Mira[/name] I think! I can’t believe DH didn’t mention [name]Goran[/name] before…that was actually supposed to be his first name but they changed it and he’s always liked it (he’s not good at this name thing, lol!). All the rest are no’s according to him…either bad person associations or thing associations. I asked about [name]Jelena[/name] and he went on a rampage about how it means “deer” and that’s a horrible name for a girl. OK, moving on…

Aw, deer are pretty and graceful. It’s not like it means warthog. lol.

[name]Goran[/name] is a really nice name, plus it’s close enough to [name]Gordon[/name] that it doesn’t sound really out there and isn’t hard to pronounce.

I like [name]Jelena[/name] a lot (then again, I also like [name]Helena[/name]), but there would probably be pronunciation issues. My friend always got Jell-EE-na. The same is true for Lejla though. My close friend by that name often had to correct people calling her Ledge-la. And of course, once they got it right, they had to respond, “Got me on my knees, [name]Layla[/name],” but who knows if this generation of kids will be familiar with [name]Eric[/name] Clapton!

If you want truly pan-Yugoslavian names, you’ll need to stay away from explicitly Muslim names (Bosnian) and explicitly Catholic names (Croatia) and explicitly Orthodox names (Serbia). [name]Just[/name] nice secular options. I think that means you should stick to the old original Slavic names-- but obviously you want something pretty and accessible in an English-speaking context.

[name]Emina[/name]-- his grandmother-- is a Muslim name, which makes sense as she was Bosnian. [name]Alma[/name] is given in Yugoslavia because of the Battle of [name]Alma[/name]-- which the Slavs lost and resulted in a British & French victory! Lejla is also Muslim, and Zlata is not accessible enough.

Zlatan isn’t accessible either. Faris is Muslim; Kenen and Alen are OK but might be seen as simple mispellings of [name]Keenan[/name] and [name]Alan[/name].

Girls

[name]Mira[/name] (great choice-- means ‘peace’)
Bisera (neutral name, meaning ‘pearl’)
Dunja (“quince”)
Iskra (“spark”)
Jasna (“Clear, sharp”)
[name]Maja[/name] ([name]Maia[/name], religion-neutral)
[name]Mila[/name] (gracious)
[name]Nada[/name] (“hope”)
Nevena (“marigold”)
Sanja (“dream”)
Tajana (“to keep secret”)
[name]Vera[/name]
[name]Zora[/name] (“dawn”)

Boys

Boro (wolf)
Branimir (great protector, great peace)
Damir (“to give peace”)
[name]Darko[/name] (gift)
Davor (“oh joy!”)
[name]Drago[/name] (precious)
[name]Emil[/name] (old [name]Roman[/name] name from which we get [name]Emily[/name])
Javor (“maple tree”)
[name]Milos[/name] (gracious)
[name]Miran[/name] (‘peaceful’)
[name]Rade[/name] (“care”)
Vedran (“clear, cheerful”)
[name]Viktor[/name]

The names don’t necessarily have to be generic Yugoslavian (slavic) names…I just meant that he isn’t against Croatian, Serbian, or Bosnian names as at the end of the day he’s a hodge podge of ethnic groups so they don’t have to conform to anything or nothing. Generic secular are always good, though. Of course names that are too “nationalistic” would definitely be out…Ratko and Slobodan, etc…nothing with negative connotations.

I was surprised he liked Zlata/Zlatan since they seemed kind of out there. I thought enough Americans had read “Zlata’s Diary” but maybe not.

Slavic names are very charming, I’ve always had a thing for them to be honest. Sweet Yugoslavian/Serbian names:
Boy:
Aleksandar
[name]Luka[/name]
Sergej
Sava
Dragomir
[name]Goran[/name]
Jevrem

Girl:
[name]Aleksandra[/name]
[name]Eszter[/name]
Anastasija
[name]Filipa[/name]
Ljuba (meaning “love”)
Olivera
Visnja

Jugo names are so pretty - i loved reading them in Zlata’s Diary. I like [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Emina[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Mirna[/name], [name]Madeline[/name] [name]Alma[/name] from your choices. I’d throw in [name]Danica[/name], [name]Petra[/name], [name]Jasmina[/name], [name]Zora[/name] as possible mn’s for girls. If DH really likes [name]Emily[/name], what about using [name]Ema[/name] or Emilija somewhere? [name]Eloise[/name] Emilija might be cute.

For boys, i find it harder to make combos. [name]Reid[/name] Alen or [name]Frederick[/name] Alen are good though. I like Branko, Dejan, [name]Marko[/name], [name]Neven[/name]. [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Neven[/name]?

Girl names:

[name]Katya[/name]
[name]Larisa[/name]
[name]Natalya[/name]
[name]Ilka[/name]
[name]Marina[/name]
[name]Mila[/name]
[name]Alina[/name]
[name]Hana[/name]
[name]Magda[/name] / Magdelena
[name]Svetlana[/name]
[name]Zelda[/name]

I love spring13’s suggestion of [name]Danica[/name], both the name itself and the meaning (morning star).

Boy Names:

[name]Dimitri[/name]
[name]Vasily[/name]
Andrik
[name]Casimir[/name] / [name]Kasimir[/name]
[name]Jarek[/name]
[name]Juri[/name]
[name]Damek[/name]
[name]Milan[/name]
[name]Tibor[/name]
[name]Stanislaus[/name]
Radimir
[name]Zander[/name]

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

I love former Yugo names. I have lots of friends from there.

Yeah! Congrats!

[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]=use [name_m]Rick[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Fred[/name_m]. I never understood why people didn’t consider that option. Or why peeps named [name_m]Richard[/name_m] are called [name_m]Dick[/name_m], for that matter. Hey, you could even use [name_m]Erick[/name_m]–
