As me and my wife are avid travelers and are dead set on trying to find a unique name for our baby boy we bounced around the idea of naming him after something geographic as a nod to our passion. I realize this can be an extremely slippery slope as we this can easily become a bit tacky (i.e. [name]Alabama[/name] [name]Smith[/name]), trendy (i.e. [name]Bronx[/name] [name]Johnson[/name]) or just a little ‘out there’ ([name]Amsterdam[/name] [name]Jones[/name]). Sometimes it works out well though, I’ve know somebody who named his daughter [name]India[/name] and i thought it a beautiful name. [name]Even[/name] [name]Cuba[/name] Gooding [name]Jr[/name]. and [name]Paris[/name] [name]Hilton[/name] made their unusual names work well for them.
Would love to hear some suggestions on great yet somewhat functional “place” names for a baby boy.
Few we had bounced around (although not really sold on):
A favourite of mine has long been [name]Oslo[/name] - it fits nicely into the [name]Arlo[/name]/[name]Harlow[/name]/[name]Milo[/name]/anything ending in o trend, and has the killer nn [name]Oz[/name] without having to us [name]Oscar[/name] (which i detest). [name]Oslo[/name] is also a wonderful city!
[name]Oslo[/name] [name]Matthews[/name]?
Or another one i’m in love with is [name]Albion[/name], an old name for [name]England[/name].
If you liked [name]Cairo[/name], what about [name]Nile[/name]? It has the benefit of sounding like the Irish name [name]Niall[/name] - [name]Nile[/name] [name]Matthews[/name], thats a pretty cool name!
My boy will be half Chinese so anything relevant to [name]China[/name] is of course special (or [name]Canada[/name]). Special place’s we’ve been including [name]China[/name], [name]Egypt[/name], [name]Russia[/name], Mongolia, [name]Peru[/name], [name]Bolivia[/name], Ecuador, SE [name]Asia[/name], UK, USA, various Caribbean, [name]Canada[/name], [name]France[/name], [name]Kenya[/name], Ethiopia, and Tanzania.
Not sure if this helps much.
It is a bit tricky finding a name that doesn’t instantly connect to a specific nationality/ethnicity/religeon. I suspect [name]Oslo[/name] may feel a bit awkward on somebody not Scandinavian.
I’d add as maybe’s the suggestions of [name]Jericho[/name] [name]Matthews[/name] and [name]Everest[/name] [name]Matthews[/name]. I don’t know if [name]Nile[/name] is bad nickname proof (“Vile” [name]Nile[/name]. “Bile” [name]Nile[/name], “Dung Pile” [name]Nile[/name])
