Grayden [name]Thomas[/name] - love this
[name]Caleb[/name] [name]Matthew[/name] (common but I love…) - these names feel so similar somehow but sound different, so they make a great combo
[name]Kyler[/name] [name]James[/name] - I’m not sure about [name]Kyler[/name], but it works really well with [name]James[/name]

[name]Gemma[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] - intriguing combo! I like a lot.
Landrey [name]Kate[/name] - another intriguing mix. Landrey works beautifully with [name]Kate[/name], but on its own I think it’s a bit masculine. nn [name]Land[/name]?

[name]Finley[/name] [name]Faith[/name] - I think this sounds a bit trendy

[name]Ellinor[/name] [name]Grace[/name] - lovely, strong name
[name]Jamison[/name] [name]Rose[/name] - [name]Rose[/name] is such a common mn, but I really like these two together!

Grayden [name]Thomas[/name] - Really like this one!!
[name]Caleb[/name] [name]Matthew[/name] (common but I love…)

[quote=“daelily”]I’d love everyone’s thoughts on our “short” list of names:

Boys:
[name]Cohen[/name] [name]Patrick[/name]

This is a good combo someone said recently that the Jewish people don’t like non Jewish using [name]Cohen[/name]. To [name]Jill[/name] or the other experts is that correct?

Grayden [name]Thomas[/name] I am not a [name]Gray[/name] person but it does have a good flow

[name]Caleb[/name] [name]Matthew[/name] (common but I love…) Not too common and great flow

[name]Kyler[/name] [name]James[/name] Like [name]Kyle[/name] but this will get mixed up with [name]Tyler[/name], [name]James[/name] is a love of mine

[name]Soren[/name] I see sore there so it is not my cup of tea

[name]Lucan[/name]/[name]Luken[/name] Reminds me of [name]Lord[/name] [name]Lucan[/name], negative image.

[name]Sayer[/name] Sorry, can’t come on board with this one

Grayer [name]Daniel[/name] [name]Daniel[/name] is lovely

Girls:
[name]Gemma[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] What a lovely combination, very fresh and beautiful. This wins hands down for me.

Landrey [name]Kate[/name] [name]Love[/name] [name]Kate[/name] not sure on Landrey maybe [name]Laura[/name] [name]Kate[/name]?

[name]Mercy[/name] [name]Clare[/name] Reminds me of [name]Madonna[/name]'s new daughter from [name]Africa[/name], not a fan of [name]Clare[/name] but if used would spell as [name]Claire[/name]

[name]Finley[/name] [name]Faith[/name] [name]Love[/name] [name]Faith[/name] but don’t like the alliteration in this combo

[name]Whitley[/name] [name]Nicole[/name] (my mn) Sounds nice but have a feeling that everyone will say [name]Whitney[/name]

[name]Waverly[/name] [name]Grace[/name] Pretty

[name]Clara[/name] [name]Danielle[/name] [name]Danielle[/name] is a big favourite of mine would prefer [name]Clara[/name] [name]Jane[/name] vibe

[name]Marina[/name] [name]Kate[/name] [name]Lovely[/name]

[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Joy[/name] [name]Lovely[/name]

[name]Ellery[/name] [name]Kate[/name] Not sure

[name]Ellinor[/name] [name]Grace[/name] I would have to go [name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Grace[/name] and then it would be beautiful

[name]Jamison[/name] [name]Rose[/name] A very good flow but I do love [name]Jamison[/name] for the boys

[name]Finley[/name] [name]Joy[/name]
[name]Finley[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Finley[/name] [name]Katherine[/name]
[name]Finley[/name] [name]Tessa[/name]
[name]Finley[/name] [name]Imogen[/name]

[name]Whitney[/name] [name]Faith[/name]
[name]Whitney[/name] [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Whitney[/name] [name]Nicola[/name]

A [name]Cohen[/name] is a holy Jewish priest and a common Jewish last name (like Goldberg), and some Jewish people are offended by its use on non-Jewish babies, and some aren’t. It’s just a matter of personal opinion.

I’m not religious at all, yet I guess I do take offense at its use on non-Jewish babies, but that’s just me. I personally view it like I would view a non-[name]Christian[/name]/Catholic/Protestant, etc. person naming their child [name]Jesus[/name], a non-Muslim person naming their child [name]Mohammed[/name], or a non-Catholic person naming their child Pope. But like I said, that’s just me.

I understand that [name]Cohen[/name] caught on because of the O.C. (see what [name]Pam[/name] and [name]Linda[/name] wrote on [name]Cohen[/name] on Nameberry by typing [name]Cohen[/name] into the “check out a name” box), but to me, it seems really strange to see it as a first name, not only because it’s a Jewish priest, but because it’s like seeing Goldberg or Greenbaum as a first name.

Aside from the sacred meaning, I guess that [name]Cohen[/name] [name]Patrick[/name] strikes me the same way in which I’d view someone naming their baby Goldberg O’[name]Shea[/name] or Schwartz [name]MacKenzie[/name].

To me, seeing [name]Cohen[/name], a Jewish [name]Priest[/name] and common Jewish last name, paired with [name]Patrick[/name], a Catholic [name]Saint[/name], just seems very mismatched.

I once expressed my opinion about this on Nameberry in an attempt to be helpful, and I was attacked on a personal level (on two different threads). Suffice it to say, it was simply an awful, awful experience. I wasn’t going to say anything about [name]Cohen[/name] ever again because of this, but you asked a good question, and I’m sincerely hoping that I can share my feelings without being personally attacked again (not by you, of course).

I guess I feel that if someone understands the religious meaning of [name]Cohen[/name] and that it may offend some (not all) Jewish people, then it’s up to them whether or not to use it.

Here’s what [name]Pam[/name] had to say about [name]Cohen[/name]:

I’m sorry I’m so late to this dispute. While name opinions can often awaken deeper, more volatile issues, when a name touches on religious beliefs things can really get heated. It’s been curious to me to see the name [name]Cohen[/name] attract a trendy following that’s – I’m going to replace the word “ignorant” in the name description – unaware of its significance in the Jewish religion. I blame television’s The O.C., on which the character [name]Seth[/name] was typically called by his last name, [name]Cohen[/name]. Since the family’s Jewishness was pretty assimilated and softcore – didn’t they celebrate Christmakah? – it was certainly easy to identify [name]Cohen[/name] with the appeal of the character and the young casual fresh feel of the name and not make the sacred Jewish connection.

That said, [name]Cohen[/name] IS a sacred Jewish surname and a 100% symbolically-significant Jewish name, so it is strange to have it taken out of context and compared on an equal level to any other first name. I guess, yes, it is like [name]Jesus[/name] or [name]Mohammed[/name], and while you don’t need to be religious to use those names, it certainly seems odd to a [name]Christian[/name] or a Muslim to hear someone debating their merits as if they were regular first names: [name]Jesus[/name] or [name]Jack[/name], which is cuter?

I’m sorry things got overheated and I hope you will all return and discuss and debate the merits of names with no lasting hard feelings. But the one thing that’s positive about such a dispute being aired here is that even if people won’t say these things to your face – or your child’s face, as he gets older – a lot of people will be thinking and feeling them. While you may have deep personal and totally valid reasons for wanting to name your son [name]Cohen[/name], it is important, I think, to know that this is a symbolically significant name for Jews and that many people will over time be shaken by your use of it.

Thanks for posting that, [name]Jill[/name]! I’d read [name]Pam[/name] and [name]Linda[/name]'s article on this somewhere (although the board dispute was before I found nameberry - sounds awful!) but wasn’t sure how to raise this. Whatever decision people make about the name, I think it’s important to know this background and the offence that may be caused. And you’re right, it is an odd combination of a holy Jewish name and an important Catholic saint - seems very obvious now!

Dear [name]Jill[/name] I had no idea that this subject had caused problems on a previous thread. I can understand why you didn’t want to mention it again, I am sorry for broaching the subject. [name]May[/name] [name]Peace[/name] and Goodwill abound here and everywhere.

You’re very welcome, Lamps, and yes, that was a great article by [name]Pam[/name]!

[name]Rollo[/name], it’s no problem, and you have nothing for which to apologize. Everything’s fine. You asked a very good question, and it was truly my pleasure to answer you to the best of my ability, sharing my personal opinions.

Have a great day!

My favorites are [name]Cohen[/name] [name]Patrick[/name], [name]Caleb[/name] [name]Matthew[/name], [name]Marina[/name] [name]Kate[/name], and [name]Gemma[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]. My rearranged additions: [name]Soren[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] (I like [name]Soren[/name] a bit more than [name]Cohen[/name], actually) and [name]Mercy[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]. [name]Marina[/name] [name]Mercy[/name] would make a fun alliterative name, too, if you’re feeling a little bold. You have many sensible and lively choices here.

Edited to add: Oh my goodness, I hadn’t seen [name]Jill[/name]'s comments on this before posting, and somehow I missed the fireworks in the past about [name]Cohen[/name], too! I just figured it was a surname with a popular “en” ending and didn’t realize its religious significance. With that in mind, I’m backing [name]Soren[/name] as a substitute more officially, unless there are major objections to Kierkegaard, lol…

Boys:
[name]Cohen[/name] [name]Patrick[/name]–like
Grayden [name]Thomas[/name]–okay, not really a fan of Grayden
[name]Caleb[/name] [name]Matthew[/name]–my favorite. I adore [name]Caleb[/name]!

Girls:
[name]Gemma[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]–very pretty

[name]Ellinor[/name] [name]Grace[/name]–nms
[name]Jamison[/name] [name]Rose[/name]–[name]LOVE[/name] [name]Jamison[/name]! Very pretty

I would have to say my favorites are [name]Caleb[/name] [name]Matthew[/name] and [name]Mercy[/name] [name]Claire[/name] (or [name]Jamison[/name] [name]Rose[/name]!)

well personally, I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Cohen[/name], but you could always spell it [name]Coen[/name]. [name]Coen[/name] is a [name]German[/name] name and is a diminutive form of [name]Conrad[/name]. I don’t prefer the [name]Coen[/name] spelling, but at least it eliminates the Jewish connotation and still gives you the name you like.

[name]Cohen[/name] [name]Patrick[/name]
Grayden [name]Thomas[/name]- too popular, with all the other -ayden names out there
[name]Caleb[/name] [name]Matthew[/name]- nice
[name]Kyler[/name] [name]James[/name]- I like [name]James[/name]
[name]Soren[/name]- nice
[name]Lucan[/name]/[name]Luken[/name]- I like [name]Lucas[/name] or [name]Luke[/name] better
[name]Sayer[/name]- nms
Grayer [name]Daniel[/name]- nms

Girls:
[name]Gemma[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]- both names are lovely, and the whole name flows very well
Landrey [name]Kate[/name]- I’m not fond of surnames as first names
[name]Mercy[/name] [name]Clare[/name]- okay
[name]Finley[/name] [name]Faith[/name]- I like [name]Finley[/name] on a boy
[name]Whitley[/name] [name]Nicole[/name]- surname
[name]Waverly[/name] [name]Grace[/name]- surname, but has a pretty sound
[name]Clara[/name] [name]Danielle[/name]- I love [name]Clara[/name]!
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Kate[/name]- [name]Marina[/name] is pretty. [name]Marina[/name] [name]Katharine[/name] would be lovely, too
[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Joy[/name]- I like [name]Charlotte[/name] a lot
[name]Ellery[/name] [name]Kate[/name]- Nice flow
[name]Ellinor[/name] [name]Grace[/name]- I like it spelled [name]Elinor[/name] or [name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Jamison[/name] [name]Rose[/name]- I like [name]Rose[/name], not so much [name]Jamison[/name]

My favorites are [name]Caleb[/name] [name]Matthew[/name], [name]Gemma[/name] [name]Caroline[/name], and [name]Clara[/name] [name]Danielle[/name]. What about [name]Marina[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] or [name]Clara[/name] [name]Elinor[/name]?

[name]Cohen[/name] [name]Patrick[/name] (my favorite so far) - I do like this name and had no idea of it’s connection. Knowing it’s background now I would probably chose something else. The variety of names styles and knoweldge of names that everyone brings to this site is what makes this place so great!
Grayden [name]Thomas[/name] - this is a nice combo.
[name]Caleb[/name] [name]Matthew[/name] (common but I love…) - In my opinion I feel like [name]Caleb[/name] is too soft of a name for a man. I see it on a kid until he is 10 and that’s it. This is just my own personal opinion.
[name]Kyler[/name] [name]James[/name] - nice combo, he could even use the nn [name]Kyle[/name] if wanted too.
[name]Soren[/name] - I like this one too.
[name]Lucan[/name]/[name]Luken[/name] - I like [name]Luke[/name] and [name]Luca[/name] but I’m not really a fan of [name]Lucas[/name]. This is a nice variation.
[name]Sayer[/name] - not my favorite. [name]How[/name] about [name]Sailor[/name] or [name]Sawyer[/name] that has already been suggested?
Grayer [name]Daniel[/name] -I do like this one too.

[name]Cohen[/name] [name]Patrick[/name] was my favorite. Instead of [name]Cohen[/name] how about [name]Colin[/name]/[name]Collin[/name], [name]Corbin[/name], or [name]Owen[/name]. I think [name]Owen[/name] [name]Patrick[/name] or [name]Colin[/name] [name]Patrick[/name] would be great alternatives.

Girls:
[name]Gemma[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] - very pretty.
Landrey [name]Kate[/name] - I think Landrey is fantastic name and love it with [name]Kate[/name].
[name]Mercy[/name] [name]Clare[/name] - so very pretty.
[name]Finley[/name] [name]Faith[/name] - nice.
[name]Whitley[/name] [name]Nicole[/name] (my mn) - also nice.
[name]Waverly[/name] [name]Grace[/name] - This one and Landrey have a unisex feel (which I like) but lean more to the feminine side. Very nice.
[name]Clara[/name] [name]Danielle[/name] - very pretty.
[name]Marina[/name] [name]Kate[/name] - I love [name]Marina[/name] (we vacation in a town with this name) [name]Marina[/name] [name]Kate[/name] is lovely.
[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Joy[/name] - pretty.
[name]Ellery[/name] [name]Kate[/name] - again pretty.
[name]Ellinor[/name] [name]Grace[/name] - you have really great combo’s. This makes picking a favorite really tough.
[name]Jamison[/name] [name]Rose[/name] - I really love this one. I’m a fan of unisex names.

My favorite girls names are Landrey [name]Kate[/name], [name]Ellinor[/name] [name]Grace[/name] and [name]Jamison[/name] [name]Rose[/name].

Boys:
[name]Cohen[/name] [name]Patrick[/name] - great name
Grayden [name]Thomas[/name] - nice spin on super popular grayson
[name]Caleb[/name] [name]Matthew[/name] - too common imo
[name]Kyler[/name] [name]James[/name] - nice
[name]Soren[/name] - dislike
[name]Lucan[/name]/[name]Luken[/name] - very cute!
[name]Sayer[/name] - prefer [name]Sawyer[/name]
Grayer [name]Daniel[/name] - prefer Grayden

Girls:
[name]Gemma[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] - love
Landrey [name]Kate[/name] - cute
[name]Mercy[/name] [name]Clare[/name] - not a fan of mercy
[name]Finley[/name] [name]Faith[/name] - prefer [name]Finley[/name] on a boy
[name]Whitley[/name] [name]Nicole[/name] - not my favorite but sounds great
[name]Waverly[/name] [name]Grace[/name] - cute
[name]Clara[/name] [name]Danielle[/name] - [name]Clara[/name] is okay, not crazy over [name]Danielle[/name]

[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Joy[/name] - pretty
[name]Ellery[/name] [name]Kate[/name] - cute

Grayden [name]Thomas[/name] - mm This one seems a little old fashioned to me I cn’t imagine a new born being coo’ed over with the name grayden “Hello widdle GRAYDEN”
[name]Caleb[/name] [name]Matthew[/name] (common but I love…) < You could try spelling it with a [name]Kaleb[/name], thats always a different way
