Names from South Australia 2009 that are a bit different

[name]How[/name] do we feel about these names? I am not a big fan, am I alone?
They are to be found here - http://www.ocba.sa.gov.au/bdm/babynames.html?startat=0&showsize=2650&orderby=amount&gender=female&year=2009&friendly=printable

but here are some high (low) lights:

[name]Gravity[/name]
[name]Aimy[/name]
Alaska
[name]Antigone[/name] (better not have a complex)
[name]Aryan[/name]
Blessings
Cider
[name]Reason[/name]

for the girls, and for the boys

[name]Ashalee[/name]
[name]Baby[/name] (hope this gets changed)
D’Artagnan (I kinda like this one)
Kredence
[name]Lando[/name] ([name]Star[/name] Wars [name]Fan[/name]!)
[name]Lazarus[/name]
Memphys

I had a D’Artagnan for a cashier once. In the states, though.

Wow, my screen name is christy too. It’s fine, because I can sign my posts with my favorite name ([name]Margaret[/name]).

Blessings is all right, though Blessing is less cumbersome. There are also several cool names that mean blessed, including [name]Asher[/name], [name]Beatrix[/name], and [name]Gwyneth[/name].

I must say that I don’t like [name]Baby[/name]. Let’s hope it’s a temporary name for parents who haven’t quite made up their minds yet.

[name]How[/name] does one actually pronounce D’Artagnan? It looks like duh-[name]ART[/name]-ag-[name]NAN[/name], but I’m not sure. Normally I don’t like apostrophes in names, but it looks necessary in this one.

The most out-there name is probably Cider. Maybe it’s a native Australian name or something, but all I can think of is a steaming mug of apple cider. At least it’s not a bad association.

Thanks for posting these! – [name]Christy[/name] ([name]Margaret[/name])

I must say I used the name [name]Christy[/name] because it is mine… I have a baby that doesn’t like sleep so my brain is usually somewhere around ‘off’.

I like the name [name]Margaret[/name] too!

D’artagnan was one of the Three Musketeers. I think it’s pronounced [name]DART[/name]-ag-nan. I am not sure if I like the name or just the reference.

As an Aussie I can assure you that Cider is not a name I have ever heard before - and I really feel for the kid because we have a joke thats quite common - “[name]Do[/name] you want some cider?” “What?” “[name]Do[/name] you want some Hotcockins?”

Hotcockins Cider.

o_0 Hotcockins! Oh, dear.

In the movie I saw they pronounced D’Artagnan like DAR-tan-yun. The ‘g’ was silent. But I’ve never taken French so I don’t know. It’s French right?

Thanks! As soon as saw that I thought, "[name]Ah[/name]! Of course it [name]DART[/name]-ag-nan. It’s always hard to tell on names with apostrophes, though.

You are probably right. I have never seen the movie, my father read me the book and he sounds like [name]Steve[/name] [name]Irwin[/name] and actually pronounces ‘theatre’ as ‘The-etta’, bless him.
