Names from the family cookbook

My grandmother recently died and in her will she left me the family cookbook. In my family, women (and occasionally a few men) have added recipes and baking tips from one generation to the next for the past 150+ years, signing each entry with their name, age, and location so we can trace our history through our favorite foods. I thought I’d share some of these names with you ladies (and men), since vintage names seem to be the hot thing these days (some of the names are ethnic Slavic and Eastern European names and spellings, where my family is from.) Enjoy!

Wow, I’m loving all the Polish names in your family tree! They’re all a bit GPish for me, since I have no Polish ancestry, but I love seeing them mentioned and used. [name]Ziven[/name], Wioletta, Emilija, Ewelina, and [name]Marek[/name] are my favorites. [name]How[/name] do you say [name]Ziven[/name], btw? I’ve always said it [name]ZEE[/name]-ven, but I was never sure if that’s correct.

I also like [name]Daniel[/name], [name]Helena[/name], [name]Agnes[/name], [name]Johanna[/name], [name]Lillian[/name], [name]Magda[/name], [name]Greta[/name], [name]Grace[/name], [name]Josephine[/name], [name]Violet[/name], [name]Alice[/name], and [name]Lidia[/name].

My great-grandmother pronounced it “TZ-iv-in”, but I’m not sure if that was because of her accent or how it’s really pronounced. [name]Ziven[/name] was a great-great-great-great uncle who died way long before I was ever a gleam in my mother’s eye.

What a treasure your grandma left to you!
