Names from The Graves, Part 1

Thanks to my mother, I have had a bit of a morbid/creepy habit since I was little. I tend to go through the multiple graveyards by my home, and try to memorize/record all the interesting/nice combinations I see. The graveyard behind my house has been pretty well full since the 1990’s, and the youngest person with a plot there, was born in 1942, so the names are somewhat historic.

I went through said graveyard this morning, and recorded the 767 names that I managed to read (many of the stones are over 125 years old, so quite a few are broken, difficult to read, etc). This is what I’ve found.

The following are more out there choices that stood out to me;

If anyone is curious in seeing the full lists, PM me and I can email them :slight_smile: Hoping to do part 2 this weekend!

[name_m]Basil[/name_m], [name_m]Lemuel[/name_m], [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], [name_f]Celia[/name_f], [name_f]Elsy[/name_f] (as [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]- though the [name_f]Elsy[/name_f] spelling is gorgeous), [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Hettie[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f], [name_f]Ria[/name_f], [name_f]Ree[/name_f] or [name_m]Henry[/name_m]), [name_u]Alvah[/name_u] (as [name_u]Alva[/name_u]), [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] and [name_f]Maude[/name_f], [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] are all on my current list.

I haven’t heard of [name_f]Nanetta[/name_f] before- I adore [name_f]Nanette[/name_f] and [name_f]Nan[/name_f] / [name_f]Nanna[/name_f], and I think [name_f]Nanetta[/name_f] is beautiful (on the list she goes). I also have a cousin named [name_u]Bentley[/name_u]!

Great list- I would definitely like to see more. I find graveyards very peaceful, much like a cathedral, so I completely understand your habit :).

I love cemeteries, honestly. You never know what antique gems you’ll uncover. [name_f]Azuba[/name_f]! Ezilpha! Florala is interesting to see because I always thought it was unique to the little town on the [name_f]Alabama[/name_f]-[name_f]Florida[/name_f] border (flor from [name_f]Florida[/name_f], ala from [name_f]Alabama[/name_f]). Guess not. [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Virtue[/name_f], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_f]Christiana[/name_f] [name_f]Emily[/name_f]… so many lovely choices!

[name_f]My[/name_f] mum has now made it her summer mission to get me around to all our local ones :wink: Today I was in the city near me, so the names were a bit more unique, because a lot more immigration occurred to the city, rather than the country, haha.We ended up finding a [name_f]Cathaline[/name_f] and Sophema. Not to mention about 4 [name_f]Effie[/name_f]'s, a [name_f]Bessie[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], a [name_m]Fergus[/name_m] [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], and an [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] :slight_smile: Florala I think was made up by the family, but it’s impossible to tell, she passed away in 1883 as an infant. I can assume her middle name was [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], as that was her grandmother’s name(a family plot, with 3 generations on it), and she is listed as Florala I. [name_m]Smith[/name_m]. I found an [name_f]Ethel[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] when I took a second glance at a website I found. A local resident added records for all the cemeteries where I live in 2007, so just about all of the names are listed there.

I’m trying to find out where Ezilpha came from. [name_f]Zilpha[/name_f] is a variant of [name_f]Zilpah[/name_f], but how did the “e” get stuck on the front?

I have no idea! I just posted a new list though: Nameberry - Welcome to the Nameberry Forums

There’s more interesting ones there as well :slight_smile:
