Names from your high school...

I found my old yearbooks today and started thinking about the names of people I went to school with. I was interested to see a great mix of common names, unusual or dated names, and names that were plain made up! I’ve divided them in to categories below. These are all Australian 1985 babies. 1985 rankings are in the brackets.

Multiple Names
[name]Jessica[/name] x 2 (1)
[name]Daniel[/name] x 2 (1)
[name]Lauren[/name] x 2 (4)
[name]Timothy[/name] x 2 (10)
[name]Joshua[/name] x 2 (14)
[name]Brendan[/name] x 2 (21)
[name]Simon[/name] x 2 (29)
[name]Jade[/name] x 2 (47)
[name]Shannon[/name] (male) x 2 (62)
[name]Gemma[/name] x 2 (90)

Other Top 100

Less Common or Rare
[name]Blair[/name] (male)
[name]Karis[/name] (not to be confused with [name]Carys[/name] - they are unrelated names)
[name]Sandy[/name] (male)
[name]Shannon[/name] (female)

[name]Brody[/name] - male

International Names
Svenja ([name]German[/name])
Outi (Finnish)
[name]Anais[/name] (French)

Creative or Alternate Spellings

Made Up
Jahde - male (pr. JAR-dee)
Jeda - female (pr. [name]JED[/name]-ah)

So from this I can see:

  • The most popular name in my year was [name]Shannon[/name], which belonged to one girl and two boys. No other name belonged to more than two people in my year (from roughly 100).
  • The boys were more likely to be given Top 100 names than the girls.
  • [name]Roxanne[/name], [name]Charles[/name], [name]Sonia[/name] and [name]Gwendolyn[/name] were given slightly dated or vintage names.
  • [name]Sienna[/name] (me!), [name]Aidan[/name], and [name]Brody[/name] had names at least a decade ahead of their time.
  • [name]Madeline[/name] was named in the biggest popularity trough the name has had in the past 100 years.
  • Only one baby ([name]Krystle[/name]) was given a kreeatyve name. Unless you count the made-up names Jahde and Jeda, which are super kreeatyve! (BTW, for those who argue that kreeatyve names affect career prospects, one of these people is now a doctor…)
  • Names I would use off this list are: [name]Daniel[/name], [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Joanna[/name], [name]Gwendolyn[/name] and [name]Anais[/name].
  • Names that I think have dated the most are: [name]Timothy[/name], [name]Kelly[/name], [name]Courtney[/name], [name]Shane[/name], [name]Craig[/name], [name]Brent[/name] and [name]Krystle[/name].

So, what does everyone else think? Any names you would use? [name]How[/name] do the names of your classmates compare?

I’m in high school right now and some of the names in my class are very interesting too.
[name]Sarah[/name]/[name]Sara[/name]-[name]Ann[/name] (There are like, 4 Sarahs and 1 [name]Sara[/name]-[name]Ann[/name]…)
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Kenzie[/name] (Not [name]Mackenzie[/name]… just [name]Kenzie[/name])
There are more but I can’t remember…
