Names Gone Fishing

My family is fairly into fishing and every once in a while I’ll hear a name or term that I find intriguing. In an attempt to uncover some interesting nature inspired names for boys, I started a list.

Ahi
Albacore
Almaco
Angler
Barracuda
Barramundi
Branzino
Bream
Burbot
Carp
[name_f]Char[/name_f]
Cobia
Crevalle
Dorsal
Hake
Herring
Kajiki
Kokanee
[name_m]Javelin[/name_m]
Mackeral
Mahi
Mako
Manta
[name_u]Marlin[/name_u]
Megalodon
Mero
Perch
Piranha
[name_m]Pollock[/name_m]
Rockling
[name_m]Rudd[/name_m]
[name_f]Sable[/name_f]
[name_f]Sabre[/name_f]
Sauger
Skate
Sole
Sturgeon
Tarpon
Tautog
Trigger
Turbot
Walu
[name_m]Zander[/name_m]

Obviously most of these are a tad over the top, but could present interesting options for parents who love fishing and/or daring names. Maybe in the middle spot at least.

My favorites here are coincidentally both also boat brands, Cobia and Mako. Angler could be an interesting occupational choice. I could see Turbot having an appeal similar to names like [name_m]Axel[/name_m] and [name_u]Blaze[/name_u]. And for the the most hardcore types, there’s Barracuda and Piranha.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think any of these have potential?

[name_m]Zander[/name_m] is relatively popular but the others would all be surprising choices. I think my favorites are ones that can shorten to normal nicknames: Rockling called [name_m]Rocky[/name_m], Herring called [name_m]Harry[/name_m], barramundi or barracuda called [name_u]Barry[/name_u]. It’d be kind of neat to appear to have an outdated nickname name and really you have a super original name that reflects a family pastime.

I met a sweet little boy named [name_m]Fisher[/name_m] M@loney and I immediately loved it. It suited him so well. Another option, perhaps.

I like that idea, kind of an old meets new creation. Herring could also be a possibility for lit fans, and Barracuda for classic rock fans.

That’s a good one. “[name_m]Fish[/name_m]” could be a tough nn but it it’s still cool.

Yes: [name_m]Javelin[/name_m]; [name_m]Pollock[/name_m]; [name_m]Rudd[/name_m].

Nope: Megalodon; Barracuda (although I did once know a dog with this name, and he went by Cuda); Tarpon; Piranha.

Occupational names like [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u], [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m], [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m], [name_m]Archer[/name_m], [name_u]Carter[/name_u], [name_u]Parker[/name_u], and [name_u]Mason[/name_u] are super in right now - why not Angler? I could see Ang working as a possible nickname, especially since many of us late-twenty/early-thirty millennials are familiar with the lovable character from Avatar.

***[name_f]Edit[/name_f]: Whoops, I didn’t see this point was part of your initial list breakdown - even so, I second it!

I’m all for offbeat nature names, but please don’t name your baby Barracuda or Piranha.

[name_m]Pollock[/name_m] and Sturgeon, on the other hand, are kind of cool.

[name_f]Sable[/name_f] is awesome!

I can totally see several of these working. I’m rather taken with Angler as an unusual occupational option too.

Great idea!

I agree Angler probably has the most potential and I’m genuinely surprised it doesn’t have a listing. I think it hits the sweet spot of being referential without being too literal.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] I actually recommend Piranha? No. [name_f]Do[/name_f] I see a YouTuber or a rockstar liking it? Yes.

I like [name_u]Marlin[/name_u] as a boy’s name, consider it a variant of [name_m]Marlon[/name_m]. Some of the more unusual names would be great for a middle name. Like Kingfisher. That would be a cool middle name!

That’s bold and totally cool!

[name_u]Love[/name_u] this one!

I like Skate. Can’t get on board with Megalodon. Definitely NOT [name_m]Pollock[/name_m]!
