Names in the top 10 that you almost never hear.

There are a few names in the top 10 that I almost never hear on a child under 10. Is it just me??? I was wondering how many people rarely hear some names in the top 10. For reference, here is the top 10 list.

1 [name]Isabella[/name] [name]Jacob[/name]
2 [name]Emma[/name] [name]Ethan[/name]
3 [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
4 [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]
5 [name]Ava[/name] [name]William[/name]
6 [name]Emily[/name] [name]Joshua[/name]
7 [name]Madison[/name] [name]Daniel[/name]
8 [name]Abigail[/name] [name]Jayden[/name]
9 [name]Chloe[/name] [name]Noah[/name]
10 [name]Mia[/name] [name]Anthony[/name]

The names I rarely hear are:

[name]Olivia[/name] and [name]Chloe[/name]

[name]William[/name], [name]Noah[/name], and [name]Michael[/name]- The only [name]Michael[/name]'s I know are all over 20 yrs. old.

1 [name]Isabella[/name] [name]Jacob[/name]
2 [name]Emma[/name] [name]Ethan[/name]
3 [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
4 [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]
5 [name]Ava[/name] [name]William[/name]
6 [name]Emily[/name] [name]Joshua[/name]
7 [name]Madison[/name] [name]Daniel[/name]
8 [name]Abigail[/name] [name]Jayden[/name]
9 [name]Chloe[/name] [name]Noah[/name]
10 [name]Mia[/name] [name]Anthony[/name]

I’ve never met a kid with a lot of these names.
[name]Michael[/name], [name]Joshua[/name], [name]Noah[/name], [name]Anthony[/name]. I have encountered all the girls except [name]Chloe[/name] and [name]Mia[/name]. I don’t think [name]Ive[/name] met more than one of any of the boys. As for girls, i hear [name]Isabella[/name] constantly, and [name]Emma[/name] a lot! I hear [name]Sophia[/name] the third most, but not too much. Honestly it makes me think that popularity doesn’t matter. I hear kids with unusual names way more often than these. Except for [name]Aiden[/name]/[name]Jayden[/name]/[name]Cayden[/name], ugh, i hear them ALL the time!

I don’t hear [name]Abigail[/name], [name]Mia[/name], [name]Ethan[/name] or [name]Alexander[/name] very much.

1 [name]Isabella[/name] :: [name]Jacob[/name]
2 [name]Emma[/name] :: [name]Ethan[/name]
3 [name]Olivia[/name] :: [name]Michael[/name]
4 [name]Sophia[/name] :: [name]Alexander[/name]
5 [name]Ava[/name] :: [name]William[/name]
6 [name]Emily[/name] :: [name]Joshua[/name]
7 [name]Madison[/name] :: [name]Daniel[/name]
8 [name]Abigail[/name] :: [name]Jayden[/name]
9 [name]Chloe[/name] :: [name]Noah[/name]
10 [name]Mia[/name] :: [name]Anthony[/name]

I do know several Isabellas, Emmas, and Madisons under the age of 5. And, as other posters have said, there are the ubiquitous -aydens for boys. (I think if you combined all the Kaydens, Braydens, Jaydens, Haydens, and Aidens, they would collectively be #1 in popularity.) But I’m with you all on the rest: where are all the Mias? The Anthonys? Honestly, as I think back over the babies I’ve met in the last year, I seem to have heard [name]Katelyn[/name] and [name]Liam[/name] more than anything else, and they’re not even on this list.

This really does make me reconsider popularity. There are names that I love ([name]Anna[/name], [name]Violet[/name], [name]Sebastian[/name]) that I’m afraid to use, but does it really matter?

Of the top 10 names, I know:

[name]Alexander[/name] (1)
[name]William[/name] (2)
[name]Daniel[/name] (1)
[name]Noah[/name] (2)

I don’t know any children under 10 named [name]Jacob[/name], [name]Ethan[/name], [name]Michael[/name], [name]Joshua[/name], [name]Jayden[/name], or [name]Anthony[/name].

[name]Isabella[/name] (more than I can count)
[name]Emma[/name] (2)
[name]Olivia[/name] (1)
[name]Sophia[/name] (3)
[name]Ava[/name] (2)
[name]Madison[/name] (1)
[name]Chloe[/name] (3)

I don’t know any children under 10 named [name]Emily[/name], [name]Abigail[/name], or [name]Mia[/name].

[name]Even[/name] with the duplicates that I know, most of them don’t know one another. I guess it’s more of the overall trends that you really need to be concerned about: the -aydens and the -belles/-bels/-bellas.

1 [name]Isabella[/name] [name]Jacob[/name]
2 [name]Emma[/name] [name]Ethan[/name]
3 [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
4 [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]
5 [name]Ava[/name] [name]William[/name]
6 [name]Emily[/name] [name]Joshua[/name]
7 [name]Madison[/name] [name]Daniel[/name]
8 [name]Abigail[/name] [name]Jayden[/name]
9 [name]Chloe[/name] [name]Noah[/name]
10 [name]Mia[/name] [name]Anthony[/name]

I do hear [name]Isabella[/name] alot, not an absurd alot, but more then any other name, well besides [name]Jacob[/name], but in all reality, i have always as long as i remeber been around ALOT of Jacobs. But i have never met a [name]Emma[/name], i have only met one [name]Olivia[/name] in middle school, never met an [name]Ava[/name], [name]Abigail[/name], Chlose, or [name]Mia[/name]. I have met one [name]Emily[/name] (my age), and i have a cousin names [name]Madison[/name] (i think she is about 6 or so) however i have another named [name]Addison[/name].

Boys are diffrent though, however besides [name]Jacob[/name], i dont know an absurd amount of any of them. I think i have met one [name]Ethan[/name] (about 8 i think), and i have a cousin names [name]Michael[/name] who is my age, but i have never met one younger then me, as far as i know, i have only really seen it as a middle name. I knew one [name]Alexander[/name] in middle/high school, one [name]William[/name] (besides my step dad), I have known 2 or 3 [name]Joshua[/name]'s, but there are all my age, not younger, I have never known a young [name]Daniel[/name], one older then me, and i probably have a cousin names [name]Daniel[/name], and i also have known one [name]Noah[/name] (about 1 or 2) and have a cousin my name named [name]Anthony[/name] (he may be 1 or 2 years younger then me), HOWEVER, i have known alot of veriations of [name]Jayden[/name], such as [name]Jayden[/name], [name]Aiden[/name], [name]Cayden[/name], ext;

I dont spend much time around younger children though, mos tof my time is spent in class, and i dont think i know one person in any of my classes by name, as i am not in any study groups or anything. In Med School im sure i will here ALOT more names. lol.

I am in NY and I have a second and third grader and a four year old.
I hear ALL those names all the time.
However, I also hear random other names a lot:
[name]Julian[/name] / [name]Juliana[/name]

I don’t live in the States but I hear those names everyday - especially [name]Ava[/name], [name]Isabella[/name] and [name]Mia[/name].

[name]Michael[/name], [name]Sophia[/name], [name]Ava[/name], [name]Jayden[/name], [name]Chloe[/name], [name]Noah[/name]

These are the names I haven’t come across personally, but have met a lot of the others

1 [name]Isabella[/name] - at least 5
2 [name]Emma[/name] - 2
3 [name]Olivia[/name] - 2
4 [name]Sophia[/name] -2
5 [name]Ava[/name] - 1
6 [name]Emily[/name] - 1
7 [name]Madison[/name] - 3
8 [name]Abigail[/name] - 4
9 [name]Chloe[/name] - 3
10 [name]Mia[/name] - 1

1 [name]Jacob[/name] - 2 they both go by [name]Jake[/name]
2 [name]Ethan[/name] - 3
3 [name]Michael[/name] - 0
4 [name]Alexander[/name] - 1
5 [name]William[/name] - 0 other than my future son
6 [name]Joshua[/name] - 2
7 [name]Daniel[/name] - 1
8 [name]Jayden[/name] - 7
9 [name]Noah[/name] - 1
10 [name]Anthony[/name] - 0

I know at least one girl with those names, but three of the boys names ([name]Michael[/name], [name]William[/name] and [name]Anthony[/name] I don’t know any child under my age with those names)

I only know one [name]Mia[/name], and she’s thirty. The only [name]Anthony[/name] I know is twelve. All the others are very common in my neck of the Midwest.

1 [name]Isabella[/name] [name]Jacob[/name]
2 [name]Emma[/name] [name]Ethan[/name]
3 [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
4 [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]
5 [name]Ava[/name] [name]William[/name]
6 [name]Emily[/name] [name]Joshua[/name]
7 [name]Madison[/name] [name]Daniel[/name]
8 [name]Abigail[/name] [name]Jayden[/name]
9 [name]Chloe[/name] [name]Noah[/name]
10 [name]Mia[/name] [name]Anthony[/name]

I think it depends on where you live. I live in South [name]Texas[/name], where there are a LOT of Hispanic influences, especially on people’s names. As a result, all of the girls named [name]Isabella[/name] I know are Hispanic. There are several Isabellas my age, (almost 15) but there are many little Isabellas too. I’ve met quite a few guys my age named [name]Jacob[/name], and one or two little ones. I’ve met at least 4-5 girls my age named [name]Emma[/name], and about 2-3 little Emmas. I’ve met several guys named [name]Ethan[/name], and maybe two little Ethans. I’ve heard [name]Olivia[/name] on maybe one or two girls my age, and maybe one little [name]Olivia[/name]. I’ve heard [name]Michael[/name] on so many guys my age, but barely any for little kids. Maybe one? [name]Sophia[/name] is another one I hear a LOT for girls my age or a couple years younger. I’ve maybe met one little [name]Sophia[/name] though. As for [name]Alexander[/name], almost every other guy my age is [name]Alex[/name] but I’ve only seen this on one or two little boys. I’ve met one or two little Avas, and none my age. I’ve met a few [name]Williams[/name], always nicknamed [name]Will[/name], and one nicknamed [name]Liam[/name]. He’s 13-14. EVERYONE my age is named [name]Emily[/name]. EVERYONE 1-3 years older or younger than me is named [name]Joshua[/name]. But I’ve yet to meet any younger kids with these names. For [name]Madison[/name] and [name]Daniel[/name], see above. I haven’t met any Chloes or Noahs, at all. Not kids my age, not little kids. ***OOPS I left out [name]Abigail[/name] and [name]Jayden[/name]. I actually haven’t met a [name]Jayden[/name] yet, though I’m sure they’re out there. [name]Abigail[/name] seems more dated to my generation. I have plenty of friends named [name]Abby[/name]. (Side note: I hope to see the day when [name]Gail[/name] and Nabby become more common as nicknames for [name]Abigail[/name] than [name]Abby[/name], but it’s probably not happening as the name itself is dropping in popularity.) I’ve met maybe one [name]Mia[/name], and they were just a few years younger than me. [name]Anthony[/name] though, I’ve seen on guys my age and older. No little ones though.

[name]Ethan[/name] and [name]Anthony[/name] are the only two names on the list that I have never heard on a young child. [name]Ive[/name] heard [name]Anthony[/name] as a mn several times but never as a first. [name]Ive[/name] only met one [name]Ethan[/name] in my entire life whos in his early 20s now.

I agree that it depends on where you live. I currently live in RI, and (as I just posted on today’s nameberry blog post), RI is VERY Italian. It has the most Italian-Americans of any state, and most are very proud of their heritage and want to preserve it through names. So, [name]Anthony[/name] is the #1 boy name here last year, so I hear it all the time! [name]Michael[/name] and [name]Joshua[/name] are also very popular. Although not in the top 10, I hear [name]Nicholas[/name] a lot, too.

For girls, [name]Isabella[/name], [name]Olivia[/name] and [name]Sophia[/name] are by far the most popular, with [name]Gabriella[/name] and [name]Ella[/name] close behind (#10 and #11 in RI). I think I’ve met one [name]Mia[/name]. I’ve actually never heard of any baby [name]Chloe[/name], [name]Emma[/name], or [name]Emily[/name], but I do know of an 9 year old [name]Madison[/name].

Originally, I’m from NC and [name]Louisiana[/name], and in both of those states, [name]Chloe[/name] and [name]Emma[/name] are very popular (at least among kids I know).

The British top ten is slightly different :
1 [name]Jack[/name] [name]Olivia[/name]
2 [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Ruby[/name]
3 [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Emily[/name]
4 [name]Harry[/name] [name]Grace[/name]
5 [name]Joshua[/name] [name]Jessica[/name]
6 [name]Alfie[/name] [name]Chloe[/name]
7 [name]Charlie[/name] [name]Sophie[/name]
8 [name]Daniel[/name] [name]Lily[/name]
9 [name]James[/name] [name]Amelia[/name]
10 [name]William[/name] [name]Evie[/name]

Most of these are spot on (I’m around the upper end of the [name]Olivia[/name] trend, and honestly every second person my age is called [name]Olivia[/name]), but [name]Jessica[/name]? Really? In the early 90s, maybe, but I haven’t heard of a little [name]Jessica[/name] since … well, ever. Also, I know a [name]Joshua[/name] or two but had no idea it was supposedly so popular for babies, the same with [name]Daniel[/name].

Finally, every single [name]Charlie[/name] that I know has the full name [name]Charles[/name]. I don’t know where these people are hiding that are naming their sons [name]Just[/name] [name]Charlie[/name]!

Well…My nephew is named [name]William[/name] [name]Hunter[/name] but we call him [name]Hunter[/name]. So possibly, the names are hiding?

Here (I live in the US), I’ve met from your list:
1 [name]Jack[/name], [name]Emily[/name], [name]Grace[/name], [name]Joshua[/name], [name]Charlie[/name], [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Daniel[/name], [name]Lily[/name], [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Evie[/name] - well she was an [name]Eva[/name].

1 [name]Isabella[/name] [name]Jacob[/name]
2 [name]Emma[/name] [name]Ethan[/name]
3 [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
4 [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]
5 [name]Ava[/name] [name]William[/name]
6 [name]Emily[/name] [name]Joshua[/name]
7 [name]Madison[/name] [name]Daniel[/name]
8 [name]Abigail[/name] [name]Jayden[/name]
9 [name]Chloe[/name] [name]Noah[/name]
10 [name]Mia[/name] [name]Anthony[/name]

I haven’t heard a little [name]Emma[/name] or [name]Abigail[/name] before, but a lot of teenagers, never an [name]Ava[/name], only one [name]Madison[/name] and only one [name]Mia[/name]. Never a small [name]Micheal[/name] or [name]Anthony[/name] (but used as mn) and not a single [name]Noah[/name]. But not really that many of the others at all either

  1. [name]Isabella[/name] - Hear it pretty much every time I leave my house

  2. [name]Emma[/name]- don’t know any, but it’s on TV so much I feel like I do

  3. [name]Olivia[/name] (3)

  4. [name]Sophia[/name] (at least 4) well, one is [name]Sofia[/name] and one is [name]Sophie[/name]

  17. [name]Daniel[/name]- ditto

  18. [name]Jayden[/name] - ditto

  19. [name]Noah[/name] (0)

  20. [name]Anthony[/name] -I know one who’s about to be born

I’m in [name]CA[/name]/PA, USA. I literally hear [name]Isabella[/name] every time I go to Target or anywhere like that. It’s at the point where it makes me cringe, which sucks because it IS a beautiful name. I’m so tired of hearing it though. After that, [name]Katelyn[/name], [name]Kaelyn[/name], [name]Kayla[/name] etc. are by far what I hear the most. My niece [name]Kaelyn[/name] just started school and her backpack hangs next to [name]Katelyn[/name]. On 4th of [name]July[/name] we had a [name]Kayla[/name], [name]Kaelyn[/name] and [name]Kaitlyn[/name] (along with [name]Madison[/name] and [name]Abigail[/name], haha). Yeah, and I know of several little Sophias and I feel like I hear it quite often in public.

As for boys, [name]Aiden[/name] and his siblings are by far what I hear the most. I feel like every time I find out a babies name it’s [name]Aiden[/name], [name]Caden[/name], [name]Braden[/name] or [name]Jayden[/name]. I wish I heard [name]Jacob[/name] more than [name]Jayden[/name] :frowning:
