Names that Blend Styles

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all!!

This week over on the blog, [name_f]Madison[/name_f] (@lateaugust) has been looking into names that blend styles - for when you’re compromising with a partner or enjoy two very different types of names!

Some questions! [name_f]Answer[/name_f] as many or as few as you wish!

  1. Which blended style is your favourite?
  2. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any other names that might fit into any of the categories?
  3. Have you had to compromise between two styles? How did you go about it?
  4. If you had to blend two styles you love, what names would fit into the middle ground?
The Blended Style Categories, for ease

Storybook [name_m]Romance[/name_m]
Delicate Darkness
[name_m]Cosmic[/name_m] [name_f]Melody[/name_f]
Biblical Opulence
Gentle Geek Chic
[name_m]Future[/name_m] Legends
Rustic Revolutionary
[name_m]Coast[/name_m] [name_m]Kingdom[/name_m]
[name_m]Wild[/name_m] [name_m]West[/name_m] Glamour
Celtic [name_f]Meadow[/name_f]

Thank you for taking part!!

  1. Either [name_m]Cosmic[/name_m] [name_f]Melody[/name_f] or Coastal [name_m]Kingdom[/name_m].
  2. I’ll add a fourth name to each blended style:
Storybook [name_m]Romance[/name_m] - [name_f]Villanelle[/name_f], a kind of poem but it also has a long romantic sound
Delicate Darkness - [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], it’s on the dark academia name list but also has a gentle feel
    [name_m]Cosmic[/name_m] [name_f]Melody[/name_f] - [name_f]Vega[/name_f], it’s both a star and the name of a singer-songwriter according to its Nameberry page
Biblical Opulence - [name_m]Nicodemus[/name_m], it’s both in the Bible and has a long grandiose feel
Gentle Geek Chic - [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], it’s on the “geek chic” list but any name that means “lovable” has a somewhat gentle feel to me
[name_m]Future[/name_m] [name_m]Legend[/name_m] - [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f], ancient but also has a Z and sounds kind of spacey
Rustic Revolutionary - [name_m]Basil[/name_m], an unusual choice from the Victorian names list that is also a plant
Coastal [name_m]Kingdom[/name_m] - [name_m]August[/name_m], traditional and means great, but also suggests summer and beaches because it’s a summer month
[name_m]Wild[/name_m] [name_m]West[/name_m] Glamour - [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], I’m not sure why they put this one on the “just country” side, it is a real vintage name and sounds kind of glamorous to me
    Celtic [name_f]Meadow[/name_f] - [name_m]Rowan[/name_m], it’s both an [name_m]Irish[/name_m] name and a kind of plant
  3. No, I haven’t.
  4. I already have - that’s part of why I love [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], because it’s both a music name and a space name.

[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] is great for you!

This was such a cool read! All the blended styles are lovely, but I think my favorites would definitely be Delicate Darkness and Gentle Geek Chic, with Rustic Revolutionary as a close runner up.

Adding a name to each style:
Storybook Romance – To this category, I would add [name_f]Novella[/name_f]: it has that classic -ella ending like many romantic names (for example, Arabella), but is also a type of literary piece.
Delicate Darkness – Here, I would add [name_m]Basil[/name_m]: he has a dark academia component through the Sherlock Holmes association, but also has the classic soft British sound.
Cosmic Melody – This one was tricky, but I think I would add [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]: not only is she astrological through her meaning “heavenly”, but there is a musical instrument called a celesta, creating the perfect blend.
Biblical Opulence – I couldn’t decide between [name_m]Lazarus[/name_m] & [name_m]Theophilius[/name_m] for this one: both are referenced in the Bible, or have biblical meanings, but also have that grand maximalist sound.
Gentle Greek Chic – I like [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] for this category: a slightly geek-ier twist on the sweet Lucy.
Future Legends – I think [name_m]Ajax[/name_m] or [name_f]Sappho[/name_f] could fit well here: both have huge historical roots through Greek mythology, but incorporate modern sounds with “Jax” and the trendy -o ending.
Rustic Revolutionary – Here, [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] would be a great pick: steampunk, but a nature connection through the meaning “sun”
Coastal Kingdom – I like [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] here: a marine connection through dolphins, but still sounding sophisticated and royal.
Wild West Glamour – Maybe [name_u]Garland[/name_u] could work here? The Old Hollywood connection with Judy Garland is there, but also a southern nature-y vibe.
Celtic Meadow – Ooo I really like [name_f]Avalon[/name_f] & [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] for this category! Both have that cozy cottagecore vibe but also Celtic roots.

[name_m]Loving[/name_m] your ideas - [name_f]Novella[/name_f], [name_m]Basil[/name_m] (and the [name_m]Dorian[/name_m] [name_m]Gray[/name_m] link too!), [name_m]Ajax[/name_m], [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], [name_f]Delphine[/name_f], [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] and Garland!!

Going to answer the questions, because why not!

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourites are probably Delicate Darkness, Gentle Geek Chic, Coastal [name_m]Kingdom[/name_m] and Celtic [name_f]Meadow[/name_f]

I’ll add one (okay, sometimes two) to each category:

Storybook [name_m]Romance[/name_m]: [name_f]Reverie[/name_f]
Delicate Darkness: [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] or [name_m]Alec[/name_m]
[name_m]Cosmic[/name_m] [name_f]Melody[/name_f]: [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
Biblical Opulence: [name_f]Bathsheba[/name_f]
Gentle Geek Chic: [name_f]Lois[/name_f] or [name_m]Rufus[/name_m]
[name_m]Future[/name_m] Legends: [name_f]Nyx[/name_f] or [name_f]Arys[/name_f]
Rustic Revolutionary: [name_f]Pepper[/name_f] or [name_f]Winter[/name_f]
Coastal [name_m]Kingdom[/name_m]: [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] ‘Sandy’
[name_m]Wild[/name_m] [name_m]West[/name_m] Glamour: [name_m]Hayward[/name_m]
Celtic [name_f]Meadow[/name_f]: [name_f]Effie[/name_f]

[name_m]Loving[/name_m] these responses! So fun to read and get new ideas. I especially feel like “omg I can’t believe I didn’t include that one” with [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] for Delicate Darkness + [name_m]Nicodemus[/name_m] for Biblical Opulence + [name_m]Basil[/name_m] for Rustic Revolutionary from @lucy_halo1 , [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] for [name_m]Cosmic[/name_m] [name_f]Melody[/name_f] (had never heard of celesta!), [name_m]Ajax[/name_m] for [name_m]Future[/name_m] Legends (if I could make 1 edit it may very well be to include [name_m]Ajax[/name_m] it fits soooo well), [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] for Rustic Revolutionary from @daisydarcy ; [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] for [name_m]Cosmic[/name_m] [name_f]Melody[/name_f], [name_f]Bathsheba[/name_f] for Biblical Opulence, [name_f]Lois[/name_f] & [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] for Gentle Geek Chic, [name_f]Nyx[/name_f] & Arts for [name_m]Future[/name_m] Legends for @Greyblue

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite is definitely Gentle Geek Chic – @ellerbea picked up on the fact that this is maybe probably my personal style blend – turns out I am not subtle

  1. I feel like we’d need a [name_m]Venn[/name_m] diagram to overlap all of those styles too! I think I’d be closest to Celtic [name_f]Meadow[/name_f] and Delicate Darkness.
  2. Here’s a few:
    Delicate Darkness: [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Maude[/name_f], [name_f]Helena[/name_f], [name_m]Ernest[/name_m], [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] (of course), [name_m]Leopold[/name_m]
    [name_m]Cosmic[/name_m] [name_f]Melody[/name_f]: [name_f]Alula[/name_f], [name_f]Vesper[/name_f], [name_f]Seren[/name_f], [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_f]Lux[/name_f], [name_f]Elara[/name_f], [name_f]Titania[/name_f], Aries/Ares, [name_m]Orion[/name_m]
    Gentle Geek Chic: [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Edie[/name_f], [name_f]Opal[/name_f], [name_m]Theo[/name_m], [name_m]Luca[/name_m]
    [name_m]Future[/name_m] [name_m]Legend[/name_m]: [name_m]Soren[/name_m], [name_m]Zephyr[/name_m], [name_m]Stellan[/name_m], [name_f]Elowen[/name_f], [name_f]Illyria[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m]
    Celtic [name_f]Meadow[/name_f]: [name_f]Lilias[/name_f], [name_f]Rowena[/name_f], Eithne/Enya, [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f], [name_m]Faolan[/name_m], [name_m]Oisin[/name_m], [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m]
  3. Personally, I am at a loss of words on how to describe my style. If I take into account all the names I love, it sits somewhere on the cusp of Historical Favourites - Poet’s Dictionary - [name_m]Sun[/name_m] & Stars. I came up with the names of the categories myself, if you couldn’t tell. Here’s also how I envision this placement:

Historical Favourites: Names plucked from history, literature and mythology that have stood the test of time [name_f]Athena[/name_f], [name_f]Cleo[/name_f], [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], [name_m]Horatio[/name_m], [name_m]August[/name_m]. [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Benedict[/name_m], [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f] (u), [name_f]Diana[/name_f], [name_m]Emrys[/name_m], [name_m]Achilles[/name_m], [name_m]Auden[/name_m]

Poet’s Dictionary: [name_m]Poetic[/name_m] – almost melancholic – names coinciding with word names, and words you are likely to encounter in a verse [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], [name_f]Elettra[/name_f], [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] (b), [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_m]Prosper[/name_m], [name_f]Emerald[/name_f], [name_f]Avalon[/name_f], [name_f]Rumi[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], [name_f]Lucasta[/name_f], [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f], [name_m]Cygnus[/name_m], [name_f]Lux[/name_f] / [name_f]Luz[/name_f], [name_f]Moon[/name_f], [name_m]Frost[/name_m], [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], [name_f]Pandora[/name_f]

[name_m]Sun[/name_m] & Stars: [name_f]Every[/name_f] thing under the sun, but mostly the sparkling ones: [name_m]Sol[/name_m] / [name_f]Soleil[/name_f], [name_f]Nyx[/name_f], [name_m]Arcturus[/name_m], [name_m]Astrophel[/name_m], [name_f]Eurydice[/name_f], [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], [name_m]Mercury[/name_m], [name_m]River[/name_m]
