I’m expecting a baby girl in [name_u]June[/name_u] who will be both Portuguese and English and even though there are so many names we could give her that work in both places and languages well, we really don’t love any of them. We have considered among others [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], [name_f]Leonor[/name_f] and [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]… but we don’t like any of them to be honest. Suggestions and tips would be very helpful.
My son is Bosnian, [name_m]German[/name_m], and American and I had the same issue. All the names I looked at that [name_f]DO[/name_f] work in those languages I just didn’t love, so it was difficult.
We ultimately went with the name we loved, which would be my advice to you, instead of settling for something we’re lukewarm about.
It happens to be an American name, so now everyone in Bosnia and Germany just has to deal with it (we live in the USA.)
I’m currently expecting our second child and might go with an old Latin name this time.
[name_f]Leonor[/name_f] is lovely! But if you’ve already considered and discounted it, here are a few more ideas. I think quite simple, feminine, -a ending names are your friend if you need something international:
[name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_f]Lola[/name_f]/[name_f]Lula[/name_f]/[name_f]Lila[/name_f]
[name_f]Alba[/name_f]
[name_f]Erica[/name_f]
[name_f]Mila[/name_f]
[name_f]Bella[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]/[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Fabia[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Bea[/name_f]
[name_f]Talia[/name_f]
[name_f]Luisa[/name_f]/[name_f]Eloisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Anika[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f]
[name_f]Camila[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f]
[name_f]Ana[/name_f]
[name_u]Carmen[/name_u]
I’m portuguese and I have thought about “international” names a lot. From your list I love [name_f]Leonor[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]. The awesome thing about [name_f]Leonor[/name_f] is that it is extremely popular in Portugal but not really anywhere else (except Spain, maybe).
Some names that could work well in portuguese and english:
[name_f]Camila[/name_f] / [name_f]Mila[/name_f]
[name_f]Adele[/name_f] / [name_f]Adela[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Diana[/name_f]
[name_f]Amalia[/name_f] / [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Eva[/name_f]
[name_f]Luz[/name_f]
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f]Petra[/name_f]
[name_f]Siena[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Flor[/name_f] / [name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f] / [name_f]Isadora[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] / [name_f]Luisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]
[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] / [name_f]Angelina[/name_f]
I think you shouldn’t worry so much about the name being “international”. [name_m]Just[/name_m] pick one that you like and fits well in the place where the baby will grow up.
Muito obrigada @mcarolina!
I liked [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] and [name_f]Angelina[/name_f] from your suggestions. I think it would be much easier to choose a name if we knew exactly where we would raise her. With Brexit and this crazy economy everything’s up in the air.
I think that shorter names are more fashionable right now in Portugal, at least in my circle, but having a very short name, I think I would like for my daughter to have a name that is longer and more versatile.
[name_f]Magdalena[/name_f]
[name_f]Sabina[/name_f]
[name_f]Selina[/name_f]
[name_f]Mariella[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f], [name_f]Ines[/name_f], [name_f]Laura[/name_f], [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] or [name_f]Viviana[/name_f]?, [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_f]Dora[/name_f], [name_f]Carolina[/name_f], [name_f]Nina[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Regina[/name_f], [name_f]Cassia[/name_f], [name_f]Gabriella[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f] and [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] or [name_f]Liliana[/name_f].
