Names that have been ruined by you because of associations

I thought it be interesting to make a thread talking about names that you like but you could never use because of associations you have with them! I’m sure somebody else is done this but I thought it would be a fun thread! So here’s what we’ll do, we will share the name/names and then tell a story about why we couldn’t use them. I’ll start…

I when I was in middle school I was into all those trendy gender neutral names like [name_u]Reagan[/name_u]. But now even when I meet new people named [name_u]Reagan[/name_u] or [name_f]Raegan[/name_f] I can’t stand the name because of the girl who bullied me in middle school. I went to a very small private school so there were only thirteen girls in my whole grade, [name_u]Reagan[/name_u] was the “[name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Bee[/name_f]” of them all. She was shallow and cruel and would find a thousand different ways to make me insecure. The worst incidents I can remember is when she told me I was so skinny I looked anorexic and that I would never get a boyfriend. When I did get a boyfriend (he was half white half Vietnamese) she and her friends bullied me because I was dating an [name_f]Asian[/name_f] boy! So yeah, I can’t stand the name [name_u]Reagan[/name_u] for that reason. But don’t worry I kind of laugh about it now because whenever I do cross paths with her she says the most stupid stuff I can’t help but laugh. Anyway… What’s your story?

The name [name_f]Nina[/name_f] has been ruined for me for a similar reason. I butted heads with a [name_f]Nina[/name_f] in high school and really did not like her.

Omg, I’ve had a bad experience with a [name_f]Raegan[/name_f] too! And she acted quite similar! But yes, similarly, several snobby girls from school ruined several cute girls names such as [name_f]Kira[/name_f], [name_f]Carly[/name_f], [name_f]Aaliyah[/name_f], and [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], which are all super cute names I would totally consider if not for poor experiences.

I love the name [name_f]Amy[/name_f]. I always have, and I always will, but I’ll never use it because a not very nice girl I know is named [name_f]Amy[/name_f]. I’ve thought about changing the spelling to [name_f]Amie[/name_f], but I think it’s still too connected.

[name_f]Grace[/name_f] for me. I have known two different Graces who were/are horribly mean and silly. (I have known other Graces, too, but not enough to undo the negative impression I have of the name personally. It’s unfortunate.)

There are others, but that one comes to mind because it’s a classic that I might have liked if not for them. Many other names with which I have negative associations aren’t really my style anyway. :woman_shrugging:t3:

I knew a [name_u]James[/name_u] who was a very smart kid but also know-it-all like and rude to other kids and to teachers. Looking back I feel kind of bad because he was very awkward and didn’t really have many friends, but he was also argumentative and difficult to get along with. I otherwise like the name but it’s hard to shake the association. It’s started growing on me more though as time passes.
Another name is [name_u]Tanner[/name_u]. He was super disruptive and didn’t respect the instructors authority. I don’t care for the name much anyways, though.
Lastly, I knew a girl named Fira, which is honestly a pretty cool name, but she always got on my nerves. She was super popular (with a pretty big ego) and pretty much everyone but my little friend group wanted to hang out with her. She was kinda mean to us, and also slapped me in the face once, but I can’t even remember why… anyways, Fira is off the table for me. Definitely a cool name for someone else though!

I have a variety of names that are ruined for me - [name_f]Naomi[/name_f], [name_f]Deidre[/name_f], [name_f]Eliana[/name_f], [name_u]Sydney[/name_u], [name_f]Angela[/name_f], [name_f]Hanna[/name_f]. [name_u]Bailey[/name_u] used to be on that list before I met the awesome lady who is my best friend now. That really changed my perspective on the name!

That would have to be [name_u]Blake[/name_u]. I can objectively appreciate it but there was a boy at my school when I was a child called [name_u]Blake[/name_u]… It was really uncommon back then, and he had err… Massive hygiene issues. Looking back it was almost definitely not his fault that his clothes were never clean etc, but I still could never consider the name :frowning:

Meryem. I went to school with one who’s an absolute… never mind. It used to be my dream name for a future daughter.

Love everything about this name. And I’m not personally a [name_u]Christian[/name_u], but there’s just no way I’ll ever be able to name a child this in good conscience.

Audra! I love this name in theory, but every time I see it on NB I think of the character from The Dark [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] :confounded: The names not exactly the same but it’s very similar in sound…

Brynn, a girl since second grade that would be my “friend” and be abusive towards me. [name_m]Tommy[/name_m], [name_u]Hunter[/name_u], and [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], exes of mine.

Jack- great name, not a great guy on one side of my family with that name. I can do a middle name but can’t do first.

Girls that were very mean to me and ruin the names

Martha
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Eva[/name_f]

Names of people that I knew

Persephone

Jenna–similar reasons from you. Its the name of a girl who was always jealous (I was a good athlete, she wasn’t) and fought with me every chance she could get.

I can’t really think of any boy names that were ruined by associations. Maybe [name_u]Cody[/name_u]. A kid I knew was a jerk. I loved the name from [name_m]Zack[/name_m] and [name_u]Cody[/name_u], but that kid kind of made me not love it as much.

Natalie, [name_f]Natasha[/name_f], [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], [name_f]Jenna[/name_f]

Francis, [name_m]Aaron[/name_m], [name_m]Edward[/name_m]

In elementary school I really loved the name [name_f]Lilly[/name_f]. But last year I befriended a girl named [name_f]Lilly[/name_f]. She was okay at first, but she ended up being really rude and just… she did not great things. I very much dislike the name [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] now. There’s book characters that make me still like the name, but I’ll never be able to forget my “friend”

I have a few.

Ruby was ruined by my toddler when It came out “booby”. And [name_m]Graham[/name_m] when he said “dam.” Always a double edged sword using a toddler to filter names.

Sabrina. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the name, but had a horrid coworker by this name. Totally ruined.
