Names that lose appeal when spoken

Has there been a name that you loved until you heard someone else speak it? I recently did this with the name Maizze. It had been on my list for so long now; liking it for it’s spunky, solid sound. Then I saw a commercial where the little girl says "[name_m]Hi[/name_m]. I’m Maizze: and it completely ruined it for me. Not totally sure why, but it did. Any names that have lost their appeal once you heard them?

[name_u]Aiden[/name_u]. I loved it back about ten years ago when I found it in an old baby name book. [name_u]Ever[/name_u] since I first heard someone say they named their baby it, I just knew I didn’t like it anymore. Which turned into a blessing with how the past few years it had become insanely popular and everything.

[name_f]Edith[/name_f]. I like how antique and cute it is on paper but it’s an unpleasant sound when someone says it loudly.

Obviously this doesn’t apply to everyone, and I respect that, but [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] really lost its appeal once I said it out loud.

The name [name_f]Capri[/name_f], I came to love it from the song by [name_u]Colbie[/name_u] Caillat but it sounds a bit to harsh and everyone say’s it reminds them of [name_f]Capri[/name_f] [name_f]Sun[/name_f] I was going to use it as a middle name for my little [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] due at the end of this month x

Was going to be [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Capri[/name_f] xx

I agree with [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]! Also [name_f]Estelle[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f], and [name_f]Adele[/name_f]. [name_f]Elysia[/name_f] and [name_f]Alcyone[/name_f] are big ones for me. I just can’t bring myself to like the see and ee sounds in those names. :frowning:

I always loved [name_f]Veda[/name_f]/[name_f]Vada[/name_f] from growing up with the [name_f]My[/name_f] Girl character, but I read on forums that it reminded folks of people of the [name_f]East[/name_f] Coast/Bostonian accent saying Darth Vader = Darth [name_f]Vada[/name_f].

I can’t unhear it now. :frowning:

[name_f]Celeste[/name_f], [name_f]Dulcie[/name_f], [name_f]Leontine[/name_f], [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f]…

I’ve mentioned these before but [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. They just do not sound pleasant in my accent.

[name_u]River[/name_u] (girl)- I had had [name_u]River[/name_u] on my unisex name list until hearing a mom speaking to her daughter, [name_u]River[/name_u]. I just didn’t like it. I’ve heard it on boys and still love it but on a girl it just didn’t sound right.

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]- With my accent it sounds lovely, ‘shah-luht’. That’s the way I’d always heard it pronounced. Then, years ago, I met a guy (not a Southerner) and he introduced me to his baby ‘[name_f]SHAR[/name_f]-lit’. Then Sex & the City came out and I heard ‘[name_f]SHAR[/name_f]-lit’ all the time. Then came [name_f]Princess[/name_f] & the Frog, and little ‘[name_f]SHAR[/name_f]-lits’ popped up everywhere.

[name_f]Lotus[/name_f] :frowning: It looks so pretty, but sounds like “load us” when I say it out loud :frowning: [name_u]Boo[/name_u]!

For me it’s [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Leonie[/name_f], [name_f]Leontine[/name_f], [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] and Esmé. They just don’t sound right in my voice/accent. Especially [name_f]Aurora[/name_f].

For me, it would be [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]. It looks gorgeous, but falls short when I say it.

SO many names. I don’t really talk about names out loud very often, but whenever I do, I’m just at a loss because I realize how hard it actually is. One that specifically comes to mind is [name_f]Celia[/name_f]. I loved the way it looks and I love its literary ties, but once I said it out loud, it just lost all its appeal. Others that had the same thing: [name_m]Archer[/name_m], [name_u]Blake[/name_u], [name_u]Chase[/name_u], [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], [name_u]Rory[/name_u]; [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Clarissa[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_u]Robin[/name_u]

Grr.

I’m sad to say that [name_m]Gage[/name_m] just went on this list for me. I have loved it for a long time but my son now has a little boy in his class named [name_m]Gage[/name_m] and every time I say it out loud I think it sounds weird.

No offense to any [name_m]Gage[/name_m] moms - I still think it is cool!

With me, its the name [name]Ffion[/name]. I love the spelling and how it looks on paper. However, I hate the pronunciation of it. Ugh.

I love [name_f]Veda[/name_f]:frowning:

What a cool topic! Two different ideas came to my mind.

First is the name [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. I love it and think it is beautiful when said correctly, but I live in a pretty hick area, and as much as I love it, I have to stop and think before I say it out loud because it comes out super-hick and ugly. We even have a town nearby spelled [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] but pronounced “ella-[name_u]NUR[/name_u]”. So yuck!

The second thing I thought of is those names that are just pretty on paper, but not out loud. In the book Eight Cousins by [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] [name_u]Alcott[/name_u], [name_f]Rose[/name_f] has two Aunts named [name_u]Peace[/name_u] and [name_m]Plenty[/name_m]. I fall in love with the name [name_u]Peace[/name_u] every time I read the book (and she is just this sweet gentle old lady). So nice! [name_m]Just[/name_m] don’t say it out loud and think of a piece of pie (or worse).
