Names that you love, but can't use

I have just been thinking about names that I love but can’t use due to various reasons. What are yours?

Here are a few of mine:

Boys

[name]Tristan[/name] (TRY-ston, not the traditional prn)
Heard this on a young man and loved it, but can’t use it because no one would pronounce it the way I would intend.

[name]Tanner[/name]
Already used by someone very close to me

[name]Seamus[/name]
Where I live no one could prn it. It is unheard of in my area.

[name]John[/name]
A family name that my family has gone overboard with. I can think of 7 off the top of my head. Such a shame, because I think [name]John[/name] is so classic and handsome.

[name]David[/name]
An ex’s name. Too bad, because like [name]John[/name] its also so classic and handsome.

[name]Noah[/name]
My sister already used this on her son

Girls

[name]Oakley[/name]
[name]One[/name] of my friends just named her newborn son this

[name]Albany[/name]
[name]Love[/name] this, but probably would never use it because I know one and I think she would be the type to think I “stole” her name

Nazariah
I know someone who used this in reference to the Nazarite oath in the Bible (Numbers 6:1-21) Personally, I thought it was really clever. Would definitely never use this because it would be evident I was copying

[name]Claiborne[/name]
For some reason I really like this, but it’s probably too out there for me to use where I live

[name]June[/name]
My grandmothers name. I love her, but I don’t plan on naming my children after anyone

Names that I love but won’t use due to current popularity or rising popularity. I still keep these names on my list in case I wake up one day and popularity doesn’t bother me anymore.

[name]Liam[/name] :(, [name]Bentley[/name], [name]Nicholas[/name], [name]Isaiah[/name]
[name]Cora[/name], [name]Isla[/name], [name]Clara[/name], [name]Stella[/name] :(, [name]Sophia[/name], [name]Emma[/name], [name]Hannah[/name], [name]Harper[/name], [name]Mila[/name], [name]Brynn[/name], [name]Delaney[/name]

Also, there are tons of names ruined for me by bad association.

I actually know a boy by every one of your boy names (the ones you listed first)

Names I would love to use but really just couldn’t:

[name]Astrid[/name] and [name]Ingrid[/name] - way too ‘foreign’ to use where I live.

[name]Alexandra[/name] - People would think I was weird if I used this because my best friend’s brother is named [name]Alexander[/name] and I’m really close with the family. I also love [name]Alexander[/name], but no way.

[name]Devon[/name]/[name]Devin[/name] for a girl - There’re so many boy [name]Devin[/name]'s it’s not even funny, and I was on aquaintance level with two of them, so it’d be weird. Again, it’s the small town thing.

[name]John[/name] - Too common, though I do love [name]Johnny[/name]

And then there are a ton of others, like dozens and dozens, that everyone I know would freak out about. Still, I’m not pregnant now (and won’t be for a long, long time) and I like to think that when I am, I’ll just go with what I and my husband like and not what everyone else wants.

I am also from a very small town

I know a girl [name]Devon[/name] (around 19) and a girl [name]Devyn[/name] (around 16). [name]Both[/name] are beautiful girls.

There’s several, but two that come to mind are [name]Darby[/name] and [name]Rowan[/name] (both for girls). [name]Darby[/name] is way too close to my name and [name]Rowan[/name] is the surname of a prominent family in my town. There’s also several Spanish names I love but wouldn’t use because if I ever moved there’d probably be pronunciation problems, i.e. [name]Marisol[/name], Lluvia, [name]Xiomara[/name]. Conversely, there’s names I wouldn’t use because in my town they’d always be given the Spanish pronunciation, while I prefer the English pronunciation, such as [name]Claudia[/name] and [name]Aurora[/name].

[name]Nicholas[/name]…=-(. My [name]BIL[/name] and now Nephew are both named this.
[name]Connor[/name]…the name of an ‘angel baby’ of some one I know
[name]Cameron[/name]…same as [name]Connor[/name]
[name]Landon[/name]…SIGH the surname begins with Lam…[name]WAY[/name] to Rhymey…:frowning:
[name]Andrew[/name], [name]William[/name], [name]Christopher[/name], [name]Zachary[/name] and [name]Alexander[/name]…all in use.

It only seems to be boy names I can’t use.

I [name]LOVE[/name] Russian names…but they sound ridiculous with our very “English” last name. [name]Dimitri[/name], [name]Svetlana[/name], [name]Anastasia[/name] (okay this is
Greek), [name]Natasha[/name], [name]Natalia[/name], [name]Alexei[/name], [name]Sergei[/name], Nikokai, [name]Mikhail[/name]…etc etc etc

So many…
[name]Brooke[/name]- my cousin named her daughter this. [name]Ive[/name] never met either of them but my grandma cant have two great granddaughters named [name]Brooke[/name].
[name]Oliver[/name]-My cousins named their dog this…hes not a very nice dog
[name]Samuel[/name]- I have a cousin named [name]Sam[/name]
[name]Emmeline[/name]- I have a bratty cousin named [name]Emma[/name]
[name]Emily[/name]- see above + popularity
[name]Charlotte[/name]- Popularity
[name]Pippa[/name]- means too many bad things in other languages
[name]Genevieve[/name]-My cousin [name]Jenn[/name] named her daughter Jenneatte…sigh…too many “[name]Jenn[/name]” names

Basically I have too many cousins and all of them are very possesive of their names. There is this huge thing in my family about using names even remotely close to another family members, even if its a third cousin once removed. So Im gonna need to come up with a unique one :frowning:

I am still holding out hope for using [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Jack[/name] even though I have names that are very close to them in my family.

[name]Archer[/name] – Too trendy.

[name]Sawyer[/name] – See above.

[name]Darwin[/name] – Too firmly associated with the [name]Charles[/name] of that name. I love eccentric names, but this one goes a wee bit too far.

[name]Calvin[/name] – [name]Just[/name] took this one out of my Top 10 with an epic sigh of regret. I love the sound and the association with the cartoon, but male pattern baldness runs in my family and I’m afraid it might end up being a self-fulfilling prophecy.

[name]Estee[/name] – Lauder. But it’s such a great name! All the sultriness of [name]Esme[/name], with an astronomical association. Sigh.

[name]Darcy[/name] – I’ve known two dogs with this name, which ruined it for me. Too bad, because it’s sweet and saucy and has a great sound.

[name]Delilah[/name] – I can’t get over the meaning and the association with the mythological figure.

[name]Daphne[/name] – (A lot of D names for some reason?) My British mother’s favorite word is “daft”. It’s a no-go.

And here are two I go back and forth on:

[name]Marlowe[/name] – I love love love this name for a boy. It has the -o ending I’m so fond of, and [name]Christopher[/name] [name]Marlowe[/name] is one of my favorite playwrights. Unfortunately everyone I’ve brought it up to thinks it sounds like a girl’s name, and the name-o-sphere seems to agree. I took [name]Auberon[/name] nn [name]Aubrey[/name] off my Top 10 for the ineradicable gender association, and I fear [name]Marlowe[/name] might have to go the same way. But it’s so cool! Sigh.

[name]Miranda[/name] – If I had to pick an all-time favorite name, this would probably be it. I adore the meaning, the sound, and the [name]Shakespeare[/name] connection. However, not only is [name]Miranda[/name] a bit too popular for my tastes and heavily associated with the 90’s, she’s also a direct rhyme with my last name. [name]Imagine[/name] a girl named [name]Miranda[/name] Panda. (Panda isn’t my ln, but it’s only a first letter away.) Yet despite this, I can’t bring myself to knock her off my Top 10! I love this name so much!

My sister’s name is [name]Lara[/name]. NOT pronounced LAIRa, but instead rhymes with [name]Cara[/name]. As in the female lead of Dr. [name]Zhivago[/name]. It’s my favorite name in the world… but I’m having twin boys and my sister already has it.

[name]Iris[/name] - the name of one of my best friends

[name]Cora[/name] - sounds too close to [name]Eleanor[/name]

Any name, male or female, that is related to [name]John[/name] is verboten due to a really bad family association. So, bye-bye [name]Jane[/name], [name]Johanna[/name], [name]Gianna[/name], [name]Evan[/name], [name]Jack[/name], [name]Shane[/name], and [name]Ian[/name]. And so long my beloved [name]Jonathan[/name]; you may not be derived from [name]John[/name], but you’re too darn similar. :frowning: Any [name]Carol[/name]- name is out because of the same person.

Oh, and I can’t use [name]Nora[/name] or (probably) [name]Micah[/name] because they’re too close to my son [name]Noah[/name]'s name. I love both, too.

[name]Cassandra[/name] nn [name]Cassie[/name] - My same age cousin’s name. I could probably get away with [name]Cassia[/name] nn [name]Cassie[/name] for a daughter. But if I could, I’d use [name]Cassandra[/name] nn [name]Cassie[/name] for myself. I think I’m totally a [name]Cassie[/name].

[name]Isaac[/name] - Ex boyfriend’s name, I love the meaning though. But it’s just not usable, certainly not with the current SO.

[name]Christopher[/name] and [name]Matthew[/name] - SO’s brothers, he refuses refuses to have them be used. And rightfully so for [name]Matthew[/name], but I love the names. :frowning:

[name]Delilah[/name] - [name]Love[/name] the name, but I will not use it due to the bible reference.

[name]Cameron[/name] - [name]Love[/name] the name, the meaning kills it for me. Same with [name]Kennedy[/name].

[name]Sierra[/name] - I really really like the name, but I don’t think I can actually go through with using it. I’ve only ever known one [name]Sierra[/name] and she was a prominent character. Not a very positive one either. Everytime I say/see/hear it, I think of her for a second. I don’t know if I can go my whole life like that.

[name]Nadia[/name] - BFF in grades 8 and 9, loved her, and still like her, but she was the uber popular girl. I don’t think I’d want her name/image popping up for the rest of my life too.

[name]Christian[/name] - I’m not actually [name]Christian[/name] and I think it’d be rather blasphemous for me to use it. SO is so it wouldn’t be too weird, but I still think it’s not appropriate.

If I go with [name]Alessandra[/name] for my first girl then I also can’t use:
[name]Alexander[/name] - My ultimately favourite boys name, but I love [name]Alessandra[/name] too much. It’s 100% my future daughter.
[name]Adriana[/name] - Too [name]Alessandra[/name] [name]Ambrosio[/name] and [name]Adriana[/name] Lima. Although [name]Adriana[/name] is the female form of my dad’s middle name.

[name]Caroline[/name] - it’s so close to my name, [name]Cara[/name]. But I’ve loved it ever since I was 5 and read the [name]Little[/name] House on the [name]Prairie[/name] Books.

[name]Alana[/name] - I have several Elaines and Alans in my family.

So sad, because I love, love, love these names and have since I was little. I may consider them for a middle spot someday!

[name]Daphne[/name], [name]Inez[/name], [name]Owen[/name], [name]Indira[/name] – My husband hates them.

There are other names I love but I feel are too difficult to pronounce, like [name]Demeter[/name]. (I know it might seem easy, but I’ve showed it to several people who read it all wrong).

[name]Lucy[/name], [name]Lizzy[/name], [name]Abby[/name], [name]Molly[/name] - all family pets!
[name]Isaac[/name] - our best friend’s son’s name
[name]Adam[/name] or [name]Michael[/name] - ex boyfriends
[name]Emma[/name], [name]Emily[/name], or [name]Emilia[/name] - my husband hates them all :frowning:

@Augusta_lee
I actually know a man named [name]Marlow[/name], probably in his 40’s. He is a very generous man and hosted a huge [name]Christmas[/name] give-away for the needy in my area. I like [name]Marlow[/name]

[name]Adelia[/name] my sister is named [name]Adele[/name] and [name]Isaac[/name] my brothers name

Girls;
[name]Poet[/name] - Hubby doesn’t like it.
[name]Pippa[/name] - [name]Don[/name]'t like the [name]Royal[/name] connection it may have.
[name]Willa[/name] - I have a [name]Mila[/name] (prn ‘Me-la’), so would be weird having both.
[name]Bonnie[/name] - Hubby isn’t keen on it.
[name]Wren[/name] - It just never sounds right when I say it out loud. :frowning:
[name]Juno[/name] - Sounds too much like ‘do you know’.

Boys;
[name]Max[/name], [name]Leo[/name], [name]Toby[/name], [name]Oscar[/name], [name]Finn[/name], [name]Lewis[/name], [name]Jude[/name] & [name]Luca[/name]/[name]Luka[/name] - All because they are too common for me. I do love them though!
